i can't answer on question what i expected to happen and what happened. i doubt
that systemd has something in common with google chrome, also i assume that

Please not for me this bug prevents me from performing updates to system.
i can only run Ubuntu, with Linux 4.8.0-54-generic.
If i run the 4.10.0-24 or 4.10.0-22 the system will halt at a black screen and
go no farther.
Also if i attempt to install updates or repair anything

Got this issue while upgrading 12.04 -> 14.04 -> 16.04 on step 14.04 -> 16.04.
Simply removed /var/lib/dpkg/info/util-linux.postinst with 'sudo rm
/var/lib/dpkg/info/util-linux.postinst' and run 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f'.

Sorry, I've been away from the computer for a while. Hope this helps.
Incidentally, running Software updater now responds "Failed to download
repository information - Check your internet connection" Internet is
fine immediately before and after each attempt.

On 20/06/17
holding the following packages at their respective versions resolves the error,
for now.
(apt-get install these packages with "apt-get install =" and
then use "apt-mark hold =")
((posted for the new guys like me, who were slightly terrified when this
error popped up))

Regarding the second question: The workaround "amixer -c 0 set
'Headphone Mic Boost',0 1" does lower the output volume significantly.
If your patch does the same as the workaround, then the output volume
would be significantly lower, I have not tested this yet though.
