[Touch-packages] [Bug 1785764] Re: Some applications render too dark when a 4K screen is attached.
Always remember a TV is not a monitor. Monitors are made to respond to colour more accurately than TVs, out of the box. If you want to use a TV as a monitor then you will very likely need to change a lot of settings in the TV itself to make it behave more like an accurate monitor. I know it's annoying, hardly any TV manufacturers do this out of the box. The first thing to remember is that the HDMI spec requires that HDMI displays respond to colour differently than non-HDMI (computer monitor) displays. The HDMI spec says that all values 0-16 are full black and all values 235-255 are full white. This is called limited RGB mode and you will need to tell BOTH the Nvidia driver and the TV to switch to full range RGB mode instead so that they render shades more accurately like a monitor. As a second preference, you should be able to tweak the gamma values in the nvidia settings utility. Your gamma exponent looks too high so reducing it will bring back those missing shades. You can also choose a colour profile in Settings > Devices > Color which may help to change the gamma curves to your liking. I hope you find a solution in one of those. Unfortunately since you're using a graphics driver that's not from the Ubuntu archive, we can't really handle bug reports about that here. If you are willing to downgrade the driver to a supported version like https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-390 then you can open a new bug report by running: ubuntu-bug nvidia-driver-390 ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => ubuntu ** Changed in: ubuntu Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1785764 Title: Some applications render too dark when a 4K screen is attached. Status in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Using Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS Running on an i7-6700k with a GTX 1080 Reproducible with nvidia-driver-396 or xserver-xorg-video-nouveau and a single 4K screen (TV) connected via HDMI. The issue: Any dark content displayed by an effected application (e.g. a very dark image or dark themed web page) is much darker than intended making it almost unusable. This only effects applications that are launched when the 4K screen is connected. If i disconnect the 4K screen, launch the app via a different 1080p monitor then reconnect the 4K screen the app remains unaffected. The only apps i have found so far that are effected by this are Google Chrome and Image Viewer. That said this is only noticeable when the app is displaying dark contend so if other apps are affected it may be impossible to tell. The attached screenshot uses a black to white gradient image to clearly demonstrate the issue. Is seems like it may be an issue with colour depth as bellow a certain brightness it just goes strait to black. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1762952] Re: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default
Hmm.. Another build attempt succeeded without changes. I went through step 1 -3 in the test case in the bug description, thus upgraded to version 1.178ubuntu2.6 of keyboard-configuraion, console- setup and console-setup-linux from bionic-proposed. The result: $ cat /etc/default/keyboard XKBLAYOUT="se,us" BACKSPACE="guess" XKBVARIANT="," XKBMODEL="pc105" XKBOPTIONS="grp_led:scroll" So no layout switching option was added behind the scenes. ** Tags removed: verification-needed verification-needed-bionic ** Tags added: verification-done verification-done-bionic -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to console-setup in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1762952 Title: Alternative shortcut for layout switching Alt+Shift unexpectedly set by default Status in console-setup package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in console-setup source package in Bionic: Fix Committed Status in gnome-control-center source package in Bionic: Invalid Bug description: [Impact] The keyboard-configuration package provides a tool for configuring the keyboard via /etc/default/keyboard. However, there are desktop GUIs which provide such tools as well, and in the case of gnome-control- center it has another idea of what /etc/default/keyboard should contain. In short: The different tools don't play well together. The proposed upload does not claim to fix all issues with this incompatibility. But one of the annoyances is that a pure upgrade of the keyboard-configuration package may result in a changed keyboard configuration without the user asking for it. The proposed upload does address that particular issue on desktop systems. [Test Case] 1. On an Ubuntu 18.04 system, make sure that the contents of /etc/default/keyboard is 'the g-c-c style', for instance: XKBLAYOUT=se,us BACKSPACE=guess XKBVARIANT=, 2. Reboot. 3. Upgrade to the version of the keyboard-configuration package in bionic-proposed. => Find that /etc/default/keyboard was not changed through the upgrade. 4. Run the command sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration => Find that you are now offered to change your keyboard configuration. [Regression Potential] As a result of this upload, and unlike before, no keyboard configuration will happen behind the scenes on a desktop system due to an upgrade of the keyboard-configuration package. This is the desired change, and I can't think of a case when a user would want the configuration to be changed without having asked for it. [Original description] Version: Ubuntu 18.04 Final Beta with default Gnome Shell included in 18.04 Steps to reproduce: 1. Define two keyboard input methods in Settings -> Region & Language -> Input Sources 2. Open several applications 3. Observe that application windows can be iterated with Alt + Tab 4. Once application window iteration was begun with Alt + Tab, try to iterate backwards with Alt + Shift + Tab. 5. Try to change keyboard input method switching hotkeys in Settings -> Region & Language -> Input Sources -> Options. 6. Observe that Keyboard shortcut for "Alternative switch to next source" is set to "Alt + Shift" and that keyboard shortcuts can only be changed in Settings -> Devices -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts. 7. Observe that the shortcut for "Alternative switch to next source" is not available for configuration in Settings -> Devices -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Actual state: * Performing step 4 does not select the previous app in application switcher but instead changes keyboard input method. Expected state: * The shortcut for "Alternative switch to next source" can be changed and / or deactivated in Settings -> Devices -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts. Notes: * The above was working fine in Ubuntu 17.10. I assume "Alternative switch to next source" did not exist in that version of Gnome Shell. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1765304] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox (by lowering & raising window whenever they're focused)
I should have read all the comments before posting, I didn't realize that this patch is supposedly not relevant any longer. Looks like this is a red herring, we need to get to the bottom of this. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to ibus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1765304 Title: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox (by lowering & raising window whenever they're focused) Status in ibus package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: tl;dr: starting in Ubuntu 18.04, "ibus" seems to lower and raise Firefox, whenever the user tries to focus an field on a web page. This is not a regression in Firefox, as the same Firefox version runs just fine in Ubuntu 17.10 -- it seems to be a bug in ibus, because it only happens (in 18.04) when the environmental variable GTK_IM_MODULE is at its default value (which is "ibus"). It had this same value in 17.10 but the bug didn't happen there; hence, I'm guessing there was a change in ibus (or a related package) that caused this breakage / lowering+raising. This is pretty bad, because in some cases, the focus-loss can mean users are simply unable to fill in password fields that previously were working fine. (see "ACTUAL RESULTS" below) STEPS TO REPRODUCE #1, via "BitWarden" Firefox extension: = 1. Start Firefox. (fresh profile if you like) 2. Install BitWarden from https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bitwarden-password-manager/ 3. Click the BitWarden toolbar icon to spawn a menu-pane. 4. Click "Log in" at the bottom of that pane. 5. Click the "Master Password" field. ACTUAL RESULTS: The menu pane disappears as soon as the Master Password field receives focus. EXPECTED RESULTS: I should be able to type in a password; pane shouldn't disappear. STEPS TO REPRODUCE #2, via Reddit: = 1. Visit https://www.reddit.com/r/firefox/ (or any reddit page) 2. Click "Log in or sign up in seconds" at the extreme upper right of the page. (click the "Log in" part of that sentence) 3. Try to click the password field (or "tab" into it) and type in some text. ACTUAL RESULTS: Try as you might, the password field never receives focus. EXPECTED RESULTS: Password field should accept focus & let me type text into it. If I run firefox from the command line with env var GTK_IM_MODULE="", then I get "expected results". But with the default value of that env var, I get "actual results" (broken behavior, unable to enter passwords). I initially reported this in Firefox, here: https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1451466 (with a few dependent bugs for the usage-specific STR quoted above). But I think it's a bug in ibus, hence filing here now. [Touch-packages] [Bug 485480] Re: cups converts multiple times between pdf and ps
Thanks for the update, DomLyons. So, do you mind if I close the report? :) G -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/485480 Title: cups converts multiple times between pdf and ps Status in cups package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: cups I guess this bug could be related to bug #382379 but as I'm not really shure I didn't append to that pretty overloaded bug. Printing a PDF can take very long (and I'm not shure if the print jobs really end successfully). I have tried three cases: CASE 1: I have a PDF (a converted PowerPoint presentation, about 125 slides, 10 MB). The PDF mainly consists of text, formula and vector graphics. There are a few JPGs in it, too, but they are low resolution only. As more than 120 pages is very much to print and the font size is big, too, I wanted to print 2 slides on one DIN A4 page. Okular (or kprinter?) has a function for this so I tried to use it. After about 1 hour I didn't have at least one printed page but a CPU intensive gs process running and a temporary PS file that was far bigger than 200 MB. After some more waiting I cancelled the printing job. CASE 2: I had the suspicion that gs processed each file as seperate image to fit two of them on one page. So I tried Adobe reader togive out a ps file with 2 slides on one page hoping that this application is a bit more efficient. It really is more efficient and the resulting PS file was "just" about 130 MB which I guess is not too bad if the Reader has converted some vector grafics into rasterized images (for compatibility reasons for example). I expected it should be no big problem to print out this "printer ready" PS file... So I opened in Okular and tried to print it. But after some time the printing wasn't even started and it took a closer look at the processes running: $ ps -fA | grep gs lp3991 2481 0 19:27 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf 433 dominic Physik 1_1 1 [...] /var/spool/cups/d00433-001 lp3992 2481 0 19:27 ?00:00:00 Brother_DCP-120C 433 dominic Physik 1_1 1 BRColorEnhancement=ON [...] lp3993 2481 0 19:27 ?00:00:00 /bin/sh /usr/lib/cups/filter/cpdftocps 433 dominic Physik 1_1 1 BRColor[...] lp3994 2481 0 19:27 ?00:00:00 /bin/csh /usr/lib/cups/filter/brlpdwrapperDCP110C 433 dominic Physik 1_1 1 [...] root 3995 2481 0 19:27 ?00:00:00 usb://Brother/DCP-120C 433 dominic Physik 1_1 1 [...] lp4058 3991 61 19:28 ?00:00:07 gs -dSAFER -dCompatibilityLevel=1.3 -dAutoRotatePages=/None -dAutoFilterColorImages=false -dNOPLATFONTS -dPARANOIDSAFER -sstdout=%stderr -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dDoNumCopies -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sstdout=%stderr -sOutputFile=- -dSAFER -dCompatibilityLevel=1.3 -dAutoRotatePages=/None -dAutoFilterColorImages=false -dNOPLATFONTS -dPARANOIDSAFER -sstdout=%stderr -dColorImageFilter=/FlateEncode -dPDFSETTINGS=/printer -dDoNumCopies -c .setpdfwrite -f - (Cups is process 2481) So it seems as if the printer ready PS file is converted to PDF and back to PS again by Cups and that gs is processing it in some way, too. This semed very inefficeinto me so I canceled the printing job again as it probably wouldn't be processed any time soon. CASE 3: I thought maybe Okular and Cups couldn't communicate that the file was already ready for printing. So I tried to print the file directly using "lp" - but the problem was the same. And also printing diectly from Adobe Reader had this effect (but I guess this is hardly surprising as it seems to use "lpr"). -- Maybe the problem is something completely different, but that's all I could find out. The only thing I know for sure is that I have no proper solution to print such documents which I need for studying :-( But I hope that this bug can be solved. I will help as good as I can. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1713313] Re: Unable to launch pkexec'ed applications on Wayland session
Are there any plans to move forward and try to coordinate applications rewrite/adaptation ? I'm not in love with wayland, but isolating graphical applications for each other seems a legitimate concern (see https://theinvisiblethings.blogspot.com/2011/04/linux-security-circus-on-gui-isolation.html for example). Now that Ubuntu has given up on Wayland by default, I'm afraid there is now less incentive for transitioning to the security model wayland wants to impose. So what? Have a great day! :) G Closed per reporter’s feedback. ** Changed in: cups (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/787992 Title: Session logs out when printing document from Libreoffice Status in cups package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: cups This morning I tried printing a document from Libreoffice Writer. Each time I send the file to print the system logs out and presents me with the login screen. I don't think the job made it to the print queue because it's not listed in the CUPS job list. Converting the file to pdf and printing through the Document Viewer works. I was able to print without problems with the same printer from Libreoffice last week. I followed instructions on the wiki and went through the printer troubleshooting wizard and have attached the file here even though it printed the test page fine. However with the troubleshooter dialogue open I tried printing from Libreoffice and the session logged out as before. Please let me know if I should be filing this under Libreoffice and not printing. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1765304] Re: Ubuntu 18.04's ibus package breaks password fields in Firefox (by lowering & raising window whenever they're focused)
So it looks like debian/patches/ibus-xx-f19-password.patch was dropped in version 1.5.17-2 in debian (https://git.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ibus/commit/?id=e5815f7d548f064d4a28044f0a5240723e280bf5), and restoring that patch fixes the issue. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1786195] Re: broken audio/muffled, no system audio
Thanks. If the sound worked fine in Ubuntu 16.04 then that's useful information. 16.04 used kernel 4.4 and you are presently using kernel 4.15 Next, please try installing an older kernel version and see if that fixes the problem. 1. Download these: http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.146/linux-headers-4.4.146-0404146_4.4.146-0404146.201808061143_all.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.146/linux-headers-4.4.146-0404146-generic_4.4.146-0404146.201808061143_amd64.deb http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v4.4.146/linux-image-4.4.146-0404146-generic_4.4.146-0404146.201808061143_amd64.deb 2. In a terminal run: cd ~/Downloads sudo dpkg -i linux*4.4.146*deb 3. Reboot and hold down Shift at start-up to choose the different kernel version. 4. Now check the new kernel is active by running: uname -a and send us the output. ** Also affects: linux (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Changed in: linux (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1786195 Title: broken audio/muffled, no system audio Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS pulseaudio: Installed: 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.1 Candidate: 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.1 Version table: *** 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.1 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic-updates/main amd64 Packages 100 /var/lib/dpkg/status 1:11.1-1ubuntu7 500 500 http://us.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu bionic/main amd64 Packages expected sound to return to normal/crisp throughout system and media applications. sound became muffled/distorted throughout all media applications, while other system sounds failed altogether. volume up/down failed. But we'll also need someone to verify this bugfix here for bionic. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to initramfs-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1769682 Title: NFS-based remote root hangs when running 'netplan apply' Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in netplan.io package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in nplan package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in initramfs-tools source package in Xenial: Fix Committed Status in netplan.io source package in Xenial: Invalid Status in nplan source package in Xenial: Fix Released Status in initramfs-tools source package in Artful: Won't Fix Status in netplan.io source package in Artful: Invalid Status in nplan source package in Artful: Fix Released Status in initramfs-tools source package in Bionic: Fix Committed Status in netplan.io source package in Bionic: Fix Released Status in nplan source package in Bionic: Invalid Bug description: [Impact] Netboot users with a remote filesystem over NFS (possibly over other networked filesystems). [Test cases] 1) Boot a system with its root filesystem over NFS. 2) Run 'sudo netplan apply' 3) Validate that the system remains responsive and keeps connectivity over the same IP address as it had. [Regression potential] This SRU changes network properties, and enforces that networkd does not release and re-request an IP address from DHCP when it is restarted. Environments relying on the IP release/renew behavior may find themselves staying on the previous IP address, which might negatively impact connectivity. Changes in connectivity on a system running netplan should be investigated as a potential regression from this SRU. Other regression possibilities would include failure to get a new IP address over time (usually seen as losing connectivity) or possible IP conflicts on a network. --- With a system booted on the network, with its remote root fs on NFS: Running 'netplan apply' restarts systemd-networkd, which releases the IP received from DHCP. With no IP (and and IP potentially changing), the NFS server can't be reached so the system hangs. 'netplan apply' or restarting systemd-networkd should not affect teh system, it should continue working normally despite "changing" network states, as long as the effective IP remains the same. [Touch-packages] [Bug 787992] Re: Session logs out when printing document from Libreoffice
Hi G, I reported the bug quite a while ago, I think it was 7 years ago now :) Unfortunately, I don't have access to an Ubuntu machine now that is connected to a printer, and cannot confirm if the bug has been fixed or not :( Best, D -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to cups in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/787992 Title: Session logs out when printing document from Libreoffice Status in cups package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: Binary package hint: cups This morning I tried printing a document from Libreoffice Writer. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1731940] Re: [P7xxDM2(-G), Realtek ALC898, Headphone Jack, External] No sound at all
Same problem (since long lime ago) on Debian but a different computer (MSI GS40 6QE Phantom) tha shares the same audio hardware: Realtek ALC898 ESS SABRE HiFi audio DAC with the following output configuration: 1. One SPDIF/headphone combo jack (to the right) 2. One Mic-In. When I connect the jack plug in the combo jack connector, the audio keeps coming out through the speakers and at the same time through the jack connector but very loud and distorted ** Attachment added: "alsa info" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/alsa-driver/+bug/1731940/+attachment/5173264/+files/alsa-info.txt.qCYBaRU47R -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1731940 Title: [P7xxDM2(-G), Realtek ALC898, Headphone Jack, External] No sound at all Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hello there, I have Ubuntu 16.04LTS installed on the Clevo P751DM2-G, also marketed as the Schenker XMG U507, the System76's Serval WS (2017 model), the Eurocom Sky X4E2, among others. The sound card is the Realtek ALC898 with the following output configuration: 1. One SPDIF/headphone combo jack (to the right) 2. One Line Out. 3. One Line-In. 4. One Mic-In. Background information: On Windows, one can use the Realtek HD Audio control panel pop-up menu on jack detection to set the output type when an audio device is plugged in to an appropriate jack, combined with Sound Blaster X-Fi MB5 software to enable post-processing effects such as Bass, noise cancellation, etc. What I have tried so far: 1. Setting the model definition at /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf with the following entries: options snd-hda-intel model=no-primary-hp enable=1 index=0 Using such a line worked before on an MSI GS43VR 6RE Phantom Pro that also has the same (or a similar) ESS Sabre Audio DAC component. Expected behavior: When plugged into the microphone jack, the ESS Sabre DAC should be activated and sound should be routed to the headset. Observed anomaly: Sound comes out through the speakers instead. However, the line-out output works. In that case, when plugged into the line out, Audio works as expected. When I typed `ubuntu-bug` into mate-terminal and apport window opened, the top of it including minimize/maximize/close buttons were hidden by top panel (primary or my lower monitor). My theme is Panetheon (with dock on left on bottom/primary monitor with 'show hide buttons' naturally ticked to enable me to access hidden top of windows. Most new windows are opened top left on my primary (lower) monitor (eg. just now I opened "about me" & its top left without minimize/close or "Mugshot title bar visible UNTIL i click 'hide panel'. To view the button top left of window requires me to click 'hide' on the right side of monitor which requires mouse movement. This does NOT cause crashes or anything. Its just annoying and I'm opting to use XFCE (which is also installed on my box). It's been doing this since I dist-upgraded to 18.04 (from 17.10). [Touch-packages] [Bug 1771749] Re: Ethernet connection lost after few minutes since starting
Concerning the issue that if I unplug the ethernet cable, the Network Manager icon in the systemtray becomes red color and when I plug it again, it remains red and no connection is detected, I have just confirmed that if I tick the allow automatic negotiation mark in the Wired tab of Edit Connections in Network Manager, then now when pluging the ethernet cable again, the Network Manager icon becomes normal color again, it detects the ethernet connection and it re-connects automatically Ok. I don't know if this option was available before, as I didn't have to choose such option in previous versions of Kubuntu, but this was not a bug but a change in the options of Network Manager (and that it's not marked such option by default). I attach you a screenshot for reference (in Spanish). ** Attachment added: "Screenshot_20180809_091556.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1771749/+attachment/5173238/+files/Screenshot_20180809_091556.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1771749 Title: Ethernet connection lost after few minutes since starting Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: This is the same bug I notified at Bug #1770848 but with a more precise selection of (what I think it is) the package affected and a better description. I made a few days ago a fresh install of the Kubuntu 18.04 LTS and it is most everything Ok, but -I think that- the network-manager has a problem. In the last LTS version, Kubuntu 16.04, nor in any Linux version if I remember well, I never lost connection through Ethernet (the only Internet connection with our desktop PC), but the Bionic Beaver loses the connection every now and then, perhaps within few minutes or hours, but several times per day. When the connection is lost, I note that it disappears any info even mention to any network into the network window and the network manager icon becomes red color. Not matter if I unplug and then plug the ethernet cable again, the ethernet connection is not longer detected and only restarting the PC makes the connection to work again. Incidentally, I also have noticed with this version of Kubuntu 18.04 that in my laptop there is also now a similar problem with the scanner: If I plug it in some USB port of the laptop once Kubuntu 18.04 is already running, it's not detected by Xsane. I have to plug it in before than pressing the power button or at the time of starting the OS, for the scanner to be detected by the scanning program (and then only works with Xsane, not if I use Simple Scan or Skanlite, even when it works under Xsane), as I said in the Bug #1771525 and, evenly, if I unplug the scanner cable from the USB port it is not detected anymore when plugging it again, and only restarting the laptop makes it to be detected.
