[Touch-packages] [Bug 1797789] Re: Video Driver not found

2018-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).
Thanks!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1797759] Re: screen goes blank when mate loads - unable to see the login screen

2018-10-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Your kernel log suggests a problem with the GPU:

[15604.676163] intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to disable graphics turbo
[15609.796033] intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to disable graphics turbo
[15614.915894] intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to disable graphics turbo
[15620.035767] intel ips :00:1f.6: failed to disable graphics turbo

The reason why recovery/safe mode works for you would be because that
uses the 'nomodeset' option.

  screen goes blank when mate loads - unable to see the login screen

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  After a clean install of Ubuntu Mate 18.04.1 LTS 64bit on my laptop HP
Elitebook 2540p Intel Core i7 CPU 640 @ 2.13GHz x 4 the screen goes blank
before the login screen appears.
  Kernel Linux 4.15.0-36-generic x86_64.
  It was fine using Ubuntu Mate 16.x.
  I have found by booting to save mode and select boot from HDD everything
works except the font is a bit large and some screens go off the bottom of the
screen and I can't view this part of the screen.
  When checking software & updates there are no additional drivers loaded.
  The monitor preferences show monitor is known, resolution is 1280 x 800,
refresh rates is 0 hz. None of this info can be changed.
  I have run the software update 3-4 times hoping that it would right itself.

Title:
  System hangs during boot at "Started configure plugged in printer"

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  System: Lenovo T430s with HP OfficeJet Pro 8600 attached via usb hub

  Followed general bug reporting instructions (including
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage). This may be kernel
  related, not xorg.

  What I tried: rebooting
  What I expected: to see the login screen
  What happened: booting hangs

  Rebooted using 'E' option in grub to remove splash and quiet. Saw
  system hang at "Started configure plugged in printer"

  When I unplug the USB hub (to which the printer is connected), I can
  reboot and login fine then reinsert USB hub.

  After this "fix," I can reboot fine without unplugging anything. This
  bug appears to happen right after a system update (running Software
  Updater and there are kernel bits to update).

  This is new behaviour; I had the same system setup running and booting
  fine under 18.04

  headphone not detected on initialization

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  every time i initialize the computer with the headphone connected, there's no
sound in the headphones. i have to take the headphone off and plug it again,
then i'm prompted with the ubuntu window asking if it's a headphone, phone or
mic. after selecting the headphone option the audio works fine. this happens
every time, not a single exception to this behavior.
  my laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15-3567 with Ubuntu 18.04.

  1) Ubuntu 18.04.1
  2) Pulseaudio 1:11.1-1ubuntu7.1
  3) Expected to initialize the OS with the headphone connected and get the
headphone recognized right away.
  4) There's no sound in the headphones, and i have to take them off and plug
it again. Then after responding to the ubuntu audio window the sound goes back
to working again

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1797817] [NEW] ibus fail to use any input method except chewing for tradtional chinese

2018-10-14 Thread Samson Yeung
Public bug reported:

ibus in Ubuntu Cosmic Cuttlefish (development branch)

All chinese input method for traditional chinese cannot be used except
ibus-chewing.
Input methods with ibus-table e,g, ibus-table-scj6 ibus-table-cangjie and
ibus-cangjie are installed. These input methods can be seen in ibus-setup and
chosen to be used. But they do not shown up in the top panel drop down menu.
Neither they can be initiated by short cut key which is set as super-space.
ibus seems ignore all other input method except Chewing.

Since fcitx is also very buggy (for which i do not report here), there
is no better way to input chinese. Same problem may be true for all
asian language.

** Affects: ibus (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1771041] Re: Remove gconf from Ubuntu

2018-10-14 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

  gconf is being removed from Debian Testing. We should remove it from
  Ubuntu also.

  eclipse is troublesome. At a minimum, we can remove everything but
  eclipse and gconf.

- We are waiting on pulseaudio also (fixed in git master).
-
  libgnome is a blocker so do it first LP: #1771031
  And remove libqt-gconf LP: #1740538 and xiphos LP: #1710318
-
- thunderbird needs to be fixed (should happen for the 60 release expected
- "soon")

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1792544] Re: demotion of pcre3 (8.x) a.k.a pcre (without the 3) in favor of pcre2 (10.x)

2018-10-14 Thread Jeremy Bicha
libpam-mount wasn't actually switched to pcre2. I filed a Debian bug to
let its maintainer know.

  [Impact]

   * Unattended-upgrades hangs and gets killed when installing upgrades
  that stat/stop services on shutdown, leaving the system in a broken
  state

  [Test Case]

   * Install an updated bionic system:
 $ lxc launch ubuntu:18.04 uu-shutdown-test
 # apt update
 ...

   * When testing the fixed version, install upgrade u-u at this point checking
that u-u.service is set up before and is wanted by shutdown.target:
  # systemd-analyze dot | grep unatt
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"-.mount" [color="green"];

 Color legend: black = Requires
   dark blue = Requisite
   dark grey = Wants
   red   = Conflicts

   * Configure u-u to run on shutdown and install -updates:
 # echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::InstallOnShutdown "true";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-on-shutdown
 # echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins::
"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-updates-too

   * Downgrade snapd:
 # apt install snapd=2.32.5+18.04

   * # reboot

   * With not fixed u-u observe the upgrade process being stuck:
# pstree| grep unatt

`-unattended-upgr---unattended-upgr-+-unattended-upgr---dpkg---snapd.prerm---systemctl
  `-{unattended-upgr}

   * With fixed u-u observe snapd update taking place and system
  rebooting after a few seconds with all updates installed

   * Since this fix is partially reverting the fix for LP: #1654600
  please test LP: #1654600 as well to avoid regressions.

  [Regression Potential]

   * As part of the fix manual changes were made to postinst to properly
transition from coupling u-u.service with multi-user.target to coupling it with
shutdown.target again which can make u-u started during normal boot when there
is a bug in the implementation.
  on-testing the SRU.
   * Due to relationship changes between u-u.service, other services and
targets u-u may fail to run on shutdown in case of an unexpected regression.

  [Original Bug Text]

  When using unattended-upgrades with "InstallOnShutdown" on Bionic, the
  package installation on various packages hangs until the systemd
  ShutdownTimeout (30min) is expired and systemd kills all processes and
  powers off/reboots the system.

  This leaves packages in an unconfigured, broken state. At least
  sometimes this cannot be fixed with a "dpkg --configure -a", but
  instead requires the user to manually reinstall the package that
  caused the hang.

  This appears to be a deadlock, because the hanging commands are always
  "systemctl stop ..." or "systemctl restart ...", etc.. If I understand
  this correctly, those systemctl commands block because systemd tries
  to shutdown the system and tries to satisfy all dependencies for the
  shutdown targets before those systemctl commands could get executed,
  which creates a deadlock.

  Steps to reproduce:

  - Install 18.04
  - activate "InstallOnShutdown" in /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/50unattended-upgrades
  - disable bionic-updates in /etc/apt/sources.list (more on that later)
  - execute "unattended-upgrade --download-only"
  - reboot the system

  -> The upgrade on shutdown hangs when configuring the apport package.
  The hanging command is "systemctl stop apport-forward.socket". The
  system hangs until the systemd ShutdownTimeout expires and systemd
  forcefully reboots the system.

  After the system is rebooted the apport package is in "iUR" state, and
  needs to be reinstalled to fix this.

  I disabled the bionic-updates pocket in sources.list, because in

  Bug report has been generated on a partially working configuration.
  That allows ubuntu-bug to do more work.

  USB-Audio Connection on Bowers & Wilkens PX Bluetooth Headphones
  started working when upgrading kernel from 4.13 to 4.15 series. Then
  it suddenly stopped working again on newer kernels. The bug report has
  been generated on the latest working mainline kernel 4.15.7. All newer
  kernels have some usb quirks in place, which should fix the playback
  sample rates to 48 kHz. The quirk seems not to be working correctly
  and hinder the audio system to recognize the USB-device as a sound
  device.

  The Headphones work on kernels before 4,15.7 when manually configuring
  pulseaudio to a default samplerate of 48 kHz.

  PX Headphones are on the newest firmware level.

Bug description:

  PX Headphones are on the newest firmware level.

  and hinder the audio system to recognize the USB-device as a sound
  device.

  The Headphones work on kernels before 4,15.7 when manually configuring
  pulseaudio to a default samplerate of 48 kHz.

  PX Headphones are on the newest firmware level.

Bug description:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1796822] Re: Desktop live cd boots corrupted screen in Virtualbox on Bionic

2018-10-14 Thread Jeremy Bicha
Never mind. I think I somehow managed to boot an older iso. I zsynced
just before so I don't know how that happened. I can't reproduce this
bug any more.

Bug exists in Cosmic. Please fix dependencies.

Many users currently trying to avoid GNOMEs Hell and some of them will
choose Xfce.

But such dependency problems make bad reputation of Xfce. So they may
consider to switch to KDE or MATE.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1778219] Re: unattended-upgrades hangs on shutdown, leaves system in a broken state

2018-10-14 Thread Balint Reczey
The hang can also occur when unattended-upgrades is started by apt's
timer (u-u is modified to help hitting it at the right time):

$ cat reproduce-apt-ran-uu.sh
#!/bin/sh

set -e

apt update
apt upgrade -y
echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins::
"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-updates-too
case $(lsb_release -c -s) in
bionic)
apt install --allow-downgrades -y apport=2.20.9-0ubuntu7
snapd=2.32.5+18.04
;;
esac

grep -q 'sleep' /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade || sed -i 's/import
atexit/import time\nimport atexit/;s/res = cache\.commit/time.sleep(5)\n
res = cache.commit/' /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade

rm -f /var/lib/apt/periodic/u*
apt upgrade -d -y
service apt-daily-upgrade start &
sleep 7
reboot

@juliank In https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unattended-
upgrades/+bug/1690980/comments/50 you suggested inhibiting shutdown for
the commit operations only in u-u, but IMO that would still leave the
race condition open where the user can start shutdown between commits
thus possibly hanging the system with the issue reported in this bug.

One option (1) would be u-u starting the inhibition at the beginning of its run
via dbus, the other (2) would be apt.systemd.daily calling u-u with the
systemd-inhibit wrapper.
2 would be cleaner and u-u would not have to grow dependency on Python3 dbus
modules.

Apt.systemd.daily calling u-u with systemd-inhibit would not back
shutdown for long on average since it is already unlikely to hit an
upgrade with a shutdown, but in the worst case installing all bionic
security updates can take 10-s of minutes. Again, this is a highly
unlikely scenario, but if users are hitting that u-u could still get
support for monitoring inhibited shutdown requests on dbus and
gracefully stop without applying all updates.

before the login screen appears.
Kernel Linux 4.15.0-36-generic x86_64.
It was fine using Ubuntu Mate 16.x.
I have found by booting to save mode and select boot from HDD everything works
except the font is a bit large and some screens go off the bottom of the screen
and I can't view this part of the screen.
When checking software & updates there are no additional drivers loaded.
The monitor preferences show monitor is known, resolution is 1280 x 800,
refresh rates is 0 hz. None of this info can be changed.

Title:
  screen goes blank when mate loads - unable to see the login screen

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Unattended-upgrades hangs and gets killed when installing upgrades
  that stat/stop services on shutdown, leaving the system in a broken
  state

  [Test Case]

   * Install an updated bionic system:
 $ lxc launch ubuntu:18.04 uu-shutdown-test
 # apt update
 ...

   * When testing the fixed version, install upgrade u-u at this point checking
that u-u.service is set up before and is wanted by shutdown.target:
  # systemd-analyze dot | grep unatt
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"-.mount" [color="green"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"system.slice" [color="green"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"network.target" [color="green"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"systemd-journald.socket"
[color="green"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"local-fs.target" [color="green"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"-.mount" [color="black"];
"unattended-upgrades.service"->"system.slice" [color="black"];
"shutdown.target"->"unattended-upgrades.service" [color="green"];
"shutdown.target"->"unattended-upgrades.service" [color="grey66"];
 Color legend: black = Requires
   dark blue = Requisite
   dark grey = Wants
   red   = Conflicts
   green = After

   * Configure u-u to run on shutdown and install -updates:
 # echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::InstallOnShutdown "true";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-on-shutdown
 # echo 'Unattended-Upgrade::Allowed-Origins::
"${distro_id}:${distro_codename}-updates";' >
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/51unattended-upgrades-updates-too

   * Downgrade snapd:
 # apt install snapd=2.32.5+18.04

   * # reboot

   * With not fixed u-u observe the upgrade process being stuck:
# pstree| grep unatt

`-unattended-upgr---unattended-upgr-+-unattended-upgr---dpkg---snapd.prerm---systemctl
  `-{unattended-upgr}

  I disabled the bionic-updates pocket in sources.list, because in the
  default configuration unattended-updates does not use bionic-updates,
  and seems to have skipped installation of apport from bionic-security
  (supposedly
