It sounds like this might be noise on the motherboard itself. Especially
if you are hearing crackling when no sound is playing.
I don't think there's much we can do about this in software, although
the kernel guys sometimes have some tricks they can do to make sound
chips less noisy...

"not possible" - In my experience with a handful of machines, upgrade to
16.04 was possible on all but one, but not smooth on any (as far as I
remember). On the machine which encountered this specific error, it
took some searching on the error message, then running the plausible
relevant commands
1. Click the "Start" button, type "cmd", and press "Enter" while holding
the "Ctrl" and "Shift" buttons. This runs the Command Prompt as an
Administrator.
2. Click "Continue" in the confirmation window. If you are not currently
logged in as an administrator, enter the administrator password.

This happened on and off. After posting this bug, Page 1 and Page 2 of
menu were ok but Page 3 was empty. Its inconsistent.

Thanks Robie, good catch. Please find attached the new patch for xenial:
I have moved a bit below the call to flock to ensure the dir was created
- the lines now out of the lock do not change any files so that should
not be a problem.

I am using Ubuntu 18.04. The App Menu Drawer doesn't show up always fully with
all the icons. Sometimes one page shows up while the rest of the pages are
empty. Not sure what caused this Thanks!
