[Touch-packages] [Bug 1838358] Re: Ibus causes gnome-shell to freeze when password fields are selected in Firefox

2019-07-31 Thread Mathew Hodson
** Changed in: ibus (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided => Medium

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1838358

Title:
Ibus causes gnome-shell to freeze when password fields are selected in
  Firefox

Status in ibus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in ibus source package in Bionic:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  [Impact]

The following has been seen in a VMware Horizon VDI. I cannot reproduce this
  issue myself.

When a user interacts with any password field in Firefox, gnome-shell
and Firefox both freeze and the system becomes unusable. If you ssh
into the system and terminate Firefox, gnome-shell unfreezes.

This only happens when the environment variable GTK_IM_MODULE is set to
"ibus". If you unset the variable, or change it to
GTK_IM_MODULE=gtk-im-context-simple and then start Firefox, everything works
as intended.

This has been seen before with gnome-shell 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.1, ibus
1.5.17-3ubuntu4 and Firefox versions starting with
68.0+build3-0ubuntu0.18.04.1

Note: Chrome[ium] and other applications do not trigger it, and it cannot be
  reproduced in other desktop environments.

This seems to be an interaction issue between ibus and gnome-shell.

  [Fix]

When ibus is built with the patch ibus-xx-f19-password.patch which was
dropped in ibus-1.5.17-2, the problem is solved.

Instead of using ibus-xx-f19-password.patch, we will instead fix it with
  upstream commit f328fd67f479faa46ca87bf3c85eed7080ec5ec0:

  https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/f328fd67f479faa46ca87bf3c85eed7080ec5ec0

Subject: client/gtk2: Add IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD for firefox and chrome
  Author: fujiwarat

This implements the password discard functionality found in
ibus-xx-f19-password.patch and places it behind two environment variables,
  IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD and IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS.

IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD is for a single process, and IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS
lets you set a regex of process names to filter and enable the fix for.

If IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD is set or IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS is set with the
process name which input is being placed into password fields, ibus will pass
through the input to the application without any processing.

  [Testcase]

Launch firefox from within a gnome-session, making sure the
GTK_IM_MODULE is set to "ibus". Note, this is the default value.

  $ env GTK_IM_MODULE="ibus" firefox

Navigate to any website which has a password field. Wikipedia or
  Reddit will do.

Click a password field and attempt to enter text. Firefox and gnome-
shell both lock up and stay frozen for an extended period of time.

Now, try it with the fix by enabling:

  $ env IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD=1 firefox

When you enter text into a password field, ibus should directly pass through
the text and the problem will be solved.

We can also ask it to always apply for a specific application with:

  $ export IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS="firefox"
  $ firefox

Again, when you enter text into a password input field, the problem will be
  solved.

  Test package is available here:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf235370-test

Please test with the revised version,
  1.5.17-3ubuntu4+sf235370v20190731b1.

  [Regression Potential]

This change has a low risk of regression, because the default behaviour is
unchanged. To be able to use the password input field discard functionality,
a user has to explicitly set an environment variable for the specific
process, or set a regex that matches a process name.

This means the fix is not enabled by default on any machines, and will
only be utilised by those suffering problems and go and manually set
environment variables or have their system administrator enable the
  environment variables permanently.

This commit is present in upstream ibus from version ibus-1.5.19 onward, and
is currently present in cosmic, disco and eoan.

If a regression occurs, users can ensure that the environment variables are
  unset and continue working.

  [Notes]

This patch is functionally the same as ibus-xx-f19-password.patch, but just
hides the features behind environment variables.

Bug description:
Dell has a feature called MAC addrss passthrough[1] that would force
usb ethernet adapters to be assigned with a predefined MAC address
stored in BIOS or so. This feature has been landed to mainline kernel
in driver r8152[2]. So whenever a r8152 managed device is plugged into
Dell devices with MAC addrss passthrough enabled, this driver will set
NIC MAC to a predefined one.

And some Dell devices have already one built-in r8152 NIC port. On
these devices, when a second r8152 NIC is plugged in, a Debian
originated udev rules file 73-usb-net-by-mac.rules[3] will invoke udev
built-in command `net_id` to give a persistent name, and that will be
based on MAC address. However, since the system has already
initialized the built-in r8152 NIC with that name, renaming the second
interface with this name will always fail.

While Debian still carries a patch called "Revert-udev-network-device-
renaming-immediately-give.patch"[4] that tries to keep support of
  already deprecated "75-persistent-net-generator.rules" based interface
renaming mechanism, this patch also propagated into Ubuntu[5]. This
patch will retry renaming with a 90 seconds timeout when the error
code is -EEXIST, so the uevent processing will always be blocked in
the last ifrename step in the victim system.

  $ env GTK_IM_MODULE="ibus" firefox

Navigate to any website which has a password field. Wikipedia or
  Reddit will do.

Click a password field and attempt to enter text. Firefox and gnome-
shell both lock up and stay frozen for an extended period of time.

Now, try it with the fix by enabling:

  $ env IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD=1 firefox

When you enter text into a password field, ibus should directly pass through
the text and the problem will be solved.

We can also ask it to always apply for a specific application with:

  $ export IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS="firefox"
  $ firefox

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1838358] Re: Ibus causes gnome-shell to freeze when password fields are selected in Firefox

2019-07-31 Thread Matthew Ruffell
Hi Oliver,

Full details from the environment which has the problem:

Affected machines are all running Bionic and are fully patched.
firefox: 68.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.18.04.1
gnome-shell: 3.28.4-0ubuntu18.04.1
ibus: 1.5.17-3ubuntu4

Machines are accessed as a VDI through VMware Horizon 7.9.0, and users who have
problems are using Gnome 3.

After discussing this with Eric D, we agreed that it might be a better idea to
not restore the old ibus-xx-f19-password.patch and instead go with the upstream
solution of
https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/f328fd67f479faa46ca87bf3c85eed7080ec5ec0
which implements the same functionality, but hides it behind two environment
variables, IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD and IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS.

To be honest, I think this approach is better since it doesn't change any
default behaviour and the fix is opt in for environments which need it. Plus
this is present in cosmic, disco and eoan, and will be available in the future
20.04 LTS.

I have tried my best to reproduce this, but I have not had any luck. I think
this solution is probably the best for all parties, and this has been tested
successfully in the affected environment, so I have made a new debdiff with the
above patch.

I would like to determine and fix the root cause, but that might be a little
challenging, and this is a sufficient workaround.

- volume control adjusts the USB speaker volume. Despite pulse seeing the
- USB device as the current output device, I still hear sound from my
- line-out.
+ Gnome shell / Gnome settings volume control adjusts the USB speaker
+ volume. Despite seeing the USB device as the current output device, I
+ still hear sound from my line-out.

In the interest of narrowing down this bug, I have found that disabling
"module-switch-on-connect" fixes the problem (my line-out stays as the
default audio device and I hear sound).

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Systems with AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs don't boot.

  [Test Case]

   * Boot with fixed systemd on an AMD Ryzen 3000 series system.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix itself is very small, it ignores known to be faulty random
values returned by the rdrand instruction and use a different random
source. Those values can still be returned by a properly working
rdrand implementation in 2 in 2^32 cases on 32 bit arches and in 2 in
2^64 cases on 64 bit arches, but the fallback to the other random
source ensures that in those rare occasions a random number can be
  generated.

  [Original Bug Text]

On the new AMD Ryzen 3000 series CPUs, there is an issue with systemd
preventing the boot process from completing. This issue does not
affect the older systemd version in 18.04, but affects the 19.04
  version.

Here is a screenshot showing what happens:

https://www.phoronix.net/image.php?id=ryzen-3700x-3900x-linux=amd_zen2_14_show

I am currently testing a patch to systemd, derived from this pull request:
  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/12536

This is a high severity issue, as I do not believe there is no
potential workaround without either a firmware update or an ISO
  respin.

I have attached a rebase of the potential patch on the current 19.04
version of systemd for reference. I will provide more details after
  testing.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1838358] Re: Ibus causes gnome-shell to freeze when password fields are selected in Firefox

2019-07-31 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Thanks for the report Matthew. I appreciate all the work to prepare a
SRU bug and a debdiff, but the very first step would be to reliably
reproduce the issue. As far as I can tell this hasn't been reported by
anyone else, which makes it likely to be an isolated issue on a very
specific setup, and thus not necessarily a good candidate for a SRU. Can
you get the person who reported the issue to provide more details on
their setup (is it stock Ubuntu or a derivative, is it fully up-to-date,
which desktop environment, what are the exact versions of gnome-shell,
firefox and ibus). Thanks!

  [Fix]

When ibus is built with the patch ibus-xx-f19-password.patch which was
dropped in ibus-1.5.17-2, the problem is solved.

ibus-xx-f19-password.patch checks to see if the GTK version is at or
above 3.6, and if it is, checks to see if the input purpose is for a
password field. If it is, then no further action is taken by ibus.

  [Testcase]

Launch firefox from within a gnome-session, making sure the
GTK_IM_MODULE is set to "ibus". Note, this is the default value.

  $ env GTK_IM_MODULE="ibus" firefox

Navigate to any website which has a password field. Wikipedia or
  Reddit will do.

Click a password field and attempt to enter text. Firefox and gnome-
shell both lock up and stay frozen for an extended period of time.

With the test package which includes ibus-xx-f19-password.patch, gnome-shell
and Firefox do not lock up and everything works as intended.

  Test package is available here:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf235370-test

  [Regression Potential]

This has a low to medium risk of regression, and is limited to inputs to
password fields in all applications, including the gnome-shell lock screen.

This patch has been extensively tested and it is present in the
  following Ubuntu releases:

  artful: 1.5.14-2ubuntu1
  zesty: 1.5.14-2ubuntu1
  yakkety: 1.5.11-1ubuntu3

The patch was introduced in trusty, and removed in bionic. I feel that the
risk of reintroducing the patch is low, since the use case of the software is
the same as previous releases in regards to input software and input language
  selection.

I still acknowledge a potential risk of regression when users change their
input engines to non defaults and pair it with non default input languages.

In the event of regression ibus can be temporarily be disabled via an
environment variable and the patch dropped in any subsequent packages.

  [Notes]

This patch will not be needed in newer versions of ibus as an official
workaround has been implemented as of ibus-1.5.19.

  https://github.com/ibus/ibus/commit/f328fd67f479faa46ca87bf3c85eed7080ec5ec0

If problems arise with password input fields in ibus versions 1.5.19
or later, which are found in cosmic onward, environment variables can
be set that have the same effect as ibus-xx-f19-password.patch.

  env IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD=1 firefox
  or
  export IBUS_DISCARD_PASSWORD_APPS='firefox,.*chrome.*'

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1835809] Re: AMD Ryzen 3000 series fails to boot

2019-07-31 Thread Giacomo Graziosi
Does anyone here have a work around to install Ubuntu 19.04 without
upgrading from a previous version?

AMD Ryzen 3000 series fails to boot

Status in systemd source package in Eoan:

I will provide more details after
  testing.

in 2010.

The project's devel mailing list had discussion activity within the last
couple years, but not very much, and nothing to explain what's going
on.:

https://www.mail-archive.com/popt-devel@rpm5.org/maillist.html

It looks like the problem isn't merely a stale link, but that the activity
level of the upstream project has dropped - unfortunately not something really
addressable at the distro level. Depending on what you need from the upstream
website, you might try reaching out to individuals from that mailing list
discussion.

Are you spotting any secondary issues being caused by the offline
rpm5.org website, within Ubuntu or the Ubuntu project infrastructure?
If there isn't, then I think since Ubuntu has been simply syncing this
package from Debian, I think we just follow their lead on what to do
packaging-wise.

Bug description:
  [impact]

the systemd networkd dhcp4 client sets the prefsrc for the default
route added when a dhcp server provides only the gateway; but if the
dhcp server provides classless route(s), those are configured instead,
and the prefsrc is not set for those.

Normally this is ok, but if the dhcp client system has other
address(es) configured on the interface using dhcp, then the src for
packets sent through a classless/static route might not be the same as
the address provided by the dhcp server.

If the gateway/router provided in the dhcp classless/static route(s)
only allows traffic from the address provided to the dhcp client, then
traffic from the dhcp client may be dropped by the gateway/router.

  [test case]

set up a dhcp server system (e.g. ubuntu with dnsmasq installed and
configured) and a dhcp client system. For example on the dhcp server,
  use this dnsmasq config:

  interface=ens8
  bind-interfaces
  domain=test,10.10.0.0/24
  dhcp-option=42,10.10.0.1
  dhcp-range=test,10.10.0.10,10.10.0.100,1h

On the dhcp client system, use networkd config such as:

  $ cat /etc/systemd/network/80-ens8.network
  [Match]
  Name=ens8

  [Network]
  DHCP=ipv4
  LinkLocalAddressing=ipv6
  Address=10.10.0.5/24

Reboot the client, or restart networkd, and it should result in:

  $ ip -4 a show ens8
  3: ens8: mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP
group default qlen 1000
  inet 10.10.0.5/24 brd 10.10.0.255 scope global ens8
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet 10.10.0.75/24 brd 10.10.0.255 scope global secondary dynamic ens8
     valid_lft 3580sec preferred_lft 3580sec

  $ ip r
default via 10.10.0.1 dev ens8 proto dhcp src 10.10.0.75 metric 1024
10.10.0.0/24 dev ens8 proto kernel scope link src 10.10.0.5
10.10.0.1 dev ens8 proto dhcp scope link src 10.10.0.75 metric 1024

Note that, because networkd completes the static ip configuration
before the dhcp reply is returned and processed, the static address is
used for the subnet-local routing. But for global routing through the
gateway, the dhcp-provided address is used:

  $ ip r get 1.1.1.1
  1.1.1.1 via 10.10.0.1 dev ens8 src 10.10.0.75 uid 1000

Now on the server, add a classless route:

  dhcp-option=121,0.0.0.0/0,10.10.0.1

and restart dnsmasq on the server. Then on the client, reboot. It
  should now have:

  $ ip -4 a show ens8
  3: ens8: mtu 1500 qdisc fq_codel state UP
group default qlen 1000
  inet 10.10.0.5/24 brd 10.10.0.255 scope global ens8
     valid_lft forever preferred_lft forever
inet 10.10.0.75/24 brd 10.10.0.255 scope global secondary dynamic ens8
     valid_lft 3585sec preferred_lft 3585sec

  $ ip r
default via 10.10.0.1 dev ens8 proto dhcp metric 1024
10.10.0.0/24 dev ens8 proto kernel scope link src 10.10.0.5

Now, the global route will use the static address, not the dhcp-
  provided address:

  $ ip r get 1.1.1.1
  1.1.1.1 via 10.10.0.1 dev ens8 src 10.10.0.5 uid 1000

If the router, 10.10.0.1, only will forward traffic sent from the dhcp
address it provided, 10.10.0.75, then this configuration will result
in the client being unable to reach anything through the router,
because all its packets will have a source address of 10.10.0.5, which
  the router would drop/reject.

  [regression potential]

this only affects dhcp routes provided by a dhcp server using the
'static' or 'classless' route dhcp options. Since this behavior is
currently the default when a system doesn't add static address(es) to
interfaces that also get dhcp addresses, this is likely not a change
in behavior for the vast majority of systems. And any systems that do
add static address(es) would usually be able to route through a
gateway from either the dhcp-provided, or static, address. So the
regression potential for this change should be low.

  [other info]

Note that systemd in Eoan is being upgraded to upstream 242, so I am
not adding this to Eoan now, as I don't want to disturb the merge. If
needed after the merge, I'll add to Eoan.

different across different releases, but all of them have the common

  itself doesn't indicate a failure.

On the other hand I see the test "upstream" failing always and it seems not
related to the actual proposed packages.

Please help to resolve this mid-term.
Short term I'll submit a force-badtest for this as it seems to hold up more
and more with no gain of seeing plenty of peopl just hitting retry every now
and then.

If test "upstream" is utterly broken consider skipping it in the next

  the remaining tests coverage.

  [regression potential]

this changes how bond slaves are managed, so regressions could affect
  any configurations using bonding.

  [other info]

the patch is already included in d, and ifupdown manages networking in
x, so this is needed only for b.

  [original description]

Running systemd-networkd from systemd 237-3ubuntu10.23 on Ubuntu
18.04.2 I have one machine where, every time systemd-networkd restarts
(ie every time there is an update to systemd) the bond0 interface
  stops working.

I see both physical interfaces go soft down and then come back again:

  Jun 21 07:28:24 odin.openstreetmap.org systemd[1]: systemd 237 running in
system mode. (+PAM +AUDIT +SELINUX +IMA +APPARMOR +SMACK +SYSVINIT +UTMP

after 200 ms for interface eno2
Jun 21 07:28:25 odin.openstreetmap.org kernel: bond0: link status up again
after 100 ms for interface eno1

and after that nothing until I stop systemd-networkd, delete the bond
interface, and then start systemd-networkd again.

On most machines the cycle seems to take a bit longer and the
interfaces reach a hard down start before coming back and in that case
there seems to be no problem.

I think this is likely an instance of this upstream bug:

  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/10118

  which has a fix here:

  https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/10465

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * If a DNS lookup returns SERVFAIL, systemd-resolved seems to cache
the result for very long (infinity?). I have to restart systemd-
resolved to have the negative caching purged.

  * After SERVFAIL DNS server issue has been resolved, chromium/firefox
still returns DNS error despite host can correctly resolve the name.

  [Test Case]

  * If a lookup returns SERVFAIL systemd-resolved will cache the result for 30s
(See 201d995),
however, there are several use cases on which this condition is not
acceptable (See #5552 comments)
and the only workaround would be to disable cache entirely or flush it ,
which isn't optimal.

  * Configure /etc/systemd/resolved.conf as follows:

  Cache=yes (default)

  * Restart systemd-resolved (systemctl restart systemd-
  resolved.service)

  * Run a host/getent command against a entry that will return SERVFAIL
and check the journalctl output to see that the reply gets served from
  cache.

  The following patch https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/13047

  [Other Info]

Note that systemd in Eoan is being upgraded to upstream 242, so I am
not adding this to Eoan now, as I don't want to disturb the merge. If
needed after the merge, I'll add to Eoan.

Sidenote: I was first confused about this file and a quick search got

Use a laptop with a key to activate airplane mode, it should toggle the
corresponding mode on/off when used

  * Regression potential
The change adds a new key definition but doesn't touch any existing one,
nothing specific to test out of the new key working

  -

There are a couple things going on, that could be fixed by a Debian or
  Ubuntu maintainer:

  - libxkbdcommon needs to be updated from 0.7.1 to 0.7.2. This
  introduces the RFKill key: https://lists.freedesktop.org/archives
  /wayland-devel/2017-August/034721.html

  - x11-proto needs a new release. This commit added RFKill, but it is
  not in a release:

https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/proto/xproto/commit/?id=98a32d328e7195e12c38baa877917335bceffbaf

  - Likely other X11 packages need to be rebuilt.

stored in BIOS or so.
