[Touch-packages] [Bug 1794033] Re: i965: Failed to submit batchbuffer: Bad address

2019-12-31 Thread mlissner
I'm encountering this about once/day on my Lenovo X1 carbon laptop with
kernel 5.3.0-24-generic.

I'm a developer, but I don't know much beyond that background about how
to fix this. I just know that I'm kind of quickly losing my mind, and
that it wasn't happening when I first started using the laptop.

Are there any solutions that I can try? I can run commands but if
somebody says to install a particular kernel, that's a half-day affair
that'll 50/50 fail as I research things. I'm happy to help though if
there's any way I can, because I can't live with a laptop that
completely crashes every 10 hours or so.

Anything I can do?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1857975] Re: /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news is in violation of the GDPR

2019-12-31 Thread tastytea
So, the IP address is not stored, not even in logs?

You haven't explained why you need all that information. I get that $lsb
and $platform may be necessary to inform about serious bugs.

* Why do you have me send $cpu?
* Why do you have me send $uptime?
* What is $cloud_id?

This is apparently caused by a behavior change in Python 3.8 due to

Software versions on a computer do not identify a person. At no point
is the data from the user agent associated with a person. Therefore
this is not personally identifying information under the GDPR.

When Canonical collects personally identifying information, it is done
with user consent, in compliance with the GDPR.

  0. Plug in a monitor that supports HDMI audio (one that appears in
  your Settings>Sound)

  1. Log out and in again.

Verify the default audio device in Settings is still speakers or
headphones. Not the monitor's HDMI audio device.

  [Regression Potential]

Low. The fix proposed just reverts to the same code used in PulseAudio
12 and earlier. It has also been released and verified on focal
  already.

  [Workaround]

  Comment out:

  load-module module-switch-on-port-available
  load-module module-switch-on-connect

  from /etc/pulse/default.pa

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1857994] [NEW] no keyboard and mouse after exit from virtual terminal

2019-12-31 Thread Stefan Pappalardo
Public bug reported:

What I expected to happen:
When exiting from virtual terminal I expected to get back to gnome session with
working keyboard and mouse.

What happened instead:
When exiting from virtual terminal I was switched automatically back to
(locked) gnome session and keyboard and mouse do not work any more.

Sequence to reproduce the issue:

Hint: tty1 and tty2 are used by X for display manager and gnome session.

1) Ctrl + Alt + F3 to switch from X to virtual terminal tty3
2) Login
3) Exit (switching back to X is performed automatically)
4) Result: keyboard/mouse do not work any more (stuck with unusable system
until power off)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker such as Sony WH-1000XM3 default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Verified fixed in BlueZ 5.52 (or 5.51), so the fix is in Ubuntu 20.04.

I'm not sure what commit(s) in BlueZ did the trick but if you are using
Ubuntu 19.10 and want the fix then please just download these packages:

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files/bluez_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files/libbluetooth3_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files
/bluez-cups_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/bluez/5.52-0ubuntu2/+build/18277594/+files
/bluez-obexd_5.52-0ubuntu2_amd64.deb

and install them together:

  dpkg -i *.deb

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1857975] [NEW] /etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news is in violation of the GDPR

2019-12-31 Thread tastytea
Public bug reported:

/etc/update-motd.d/50-motd-news periodically makes a connection to
motd.ubuntu.com and sends an User-Agent containing: “curl/$curl_ver $lsb
$platform $cpu $uptime cloud_id/$cloud_id” (together with the IP
address, obviously).

While it can be argued that the checking for important messages (for
things like “Heartbleed“ etc.) is necessary, the expressive User-Agent
clearly is not. It is illegal (and potentially costly) to store any
personally identifiable data that is not absolutely necessary without
informed consent.

This problematic behaviour is known since at least 2017:
.

Note that the fact that it can be disabled does not help. If you want to
collect this kind of data, you need informed consent.

Why not just let curl use the default User-Agent?

Please explain why you use this User-Agent, if you store it, if you
store the IP address and for how long. And if you store anything, stop.

** Affects: base-files (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Also confirmed the bug does NOT exist in Ubuntu 20.04. But more testing
would be required to identify which package has fixed it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 508522] Re: Mic is not available with A2DP Bluetooth profile

On second thoughts, the bug description here already sounds accurate.
Only the bug title is wrong so I will fix that.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: pulseaudio

  I'm testing a Nokia BH-905i headset (see
http://www.wissel.net/blog/d6plinks/SHWL-8AZGGF ) on Ubuntu 10.10. The
Bluetooth module correctly identifies the headset and the both audio profiles
"HSP/ HFP Telephony duplex" and "A2DP High Fidelity Playback". For music
playback only A2DP is suitable (HSP/HFP sounds like listening to music played
through an old telephone). A2DP does not have an INPUT mode, so use of the
headset for VoiP isn't possible.
What would be needed is a separate selection to allow to select A2DP for
output and HSP/HFP for input. Smartphones (a lot of them *nix based) phones do
that (or they switch on the fly?).

  Formal structure:
  1) Ubuntu 10.10
  2) Pulse-Audio 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1
  consisting og pluseaudio, pulseaudio-esound-compat,
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth, pulseaudio-module-gconf, pulseaudio-module-x11,
pulseaudio-utils
  3) Select high quality audio output and still use the Bluetooth microphone
  4) Had to choose: either high quality audio or "telephone quality" with
microphone

I can change the profile without the Bluetooth connection dropping,
but that's ridiculous. E.g. listening to music, a call comes in. Then
I would need to switch the profile before answering. Please note that
in Windows, Mac OS, iOS, Android, and Windows Mobile it's done
  automatically.

  Check out attached screencast.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 508522] Re: Mic is not available with A2DP Bluetooth profile

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
I'm trying to remember where we were at here, but it seems like the
answer is just that A2DP does not support a mic. So this isn't a
software bug and it probably should not stay open.

We do however understand people would like better automatic switching to
headset mode when they need a mic. If that includes you then please open
a new bug by running:

  ubuntu-bug pulseaudio

Failed to change profile to A2DP

Status in Bluez Utilities:

  Fix Released

Bug description:
I upgraded to 13.04 recently and my A2DP profile, which had been
working great under 12.10 is suddenly gone. Neither my blueman applet
nor the built-in bluetooth manager applet can connect my external
bluetooth speaker to the A2DP profile. They can connect to the
  bluetooth device itself just fine.

  Steps I'm using:

  * using blueman, I can connect to the external bluetooth speaker and view the
device in the devices listing
  * I can connect the device to the Audio sink and I get a message saying it is
now connected and will "show in the PulseAudio mixer"
  * After connecting the external speaker to the audio sink, I can also see the
device in the "Play sound through" listing in the Sound system control panel,
but the icon has a circle with a line through it.
  * but if I right-click the device and choose "Audio Profile" from the context
menu and try to select "High Fidelity Playback (A2DP)" as the new profile, I
get an error message stating "failed to change profile to a2dp"

  I've already added "Enable=Socket" in /etc/bluetooth/audio.conf,
without that I can't pair my headset. Now I can pair it, but I can't
  activate the A2DP profile.

When I try to activate it, I see this message in my syslog :
pulseaudio[2603]: [pulseaudio] module-bluetooth-device.c: Profile has no
transport

I tried the kernel 3.9.0 because of a sound problem with my soundcard,
this kernel fixed my soundcard problem, but A2DP still doesn't work

Title:
Poor quality audio with modern Bluetooth headsets in HSP/HFP. Missing
  wide band speech support.

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in Arch Linux:
  New

Bug description:
Bluetooth HSP/HFP audio quality is poor on Ubuntu comparative to all
other major platforms (Windows, MacOS, ChromeOS, Android, iOS).

Modern Bluetooth headsets (such as the Bose QC series headphones, many
others) are capable of using HFP 1.6 with mSBC 16kHz audio encoding.
As it currently stands, Ubuntu defaults to only supporting HSP
headsets using 8kHz CVSD, and is incapable of supporting HFP 1.6 at
  this time.

The ChromiumOS team recently tackled this issue -
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=843048

Their efforts may assist in bringing this to Ubuntu, however it
appears that there are quite a lot of differences considering they
have developed their own audio server solution etc.

The Bluetooth Telephony Working Group published the HFP 1.6 spec in
  May 2011 -
  https://www.bluetooth.org/docman/handlers/downloaddoc.ashx?doc_id=238193

Patches have been proposed in the past for this issue to the kernel
  and PulseAudio:

  PulseAudio: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/245272/
  Kernel: https://www.spinics.net/lists/linux-bluetooth/msg76982.html

It appears that the Chromium OS team applied the same kernel patch:

https://chromium.googlesource.com/chromiumos/third_party/kernel/+/77dd0cb94c1713a8a12f6e392955dfa64c430e54

Title:
Bluetooth headphones only use A2DP when connected manually

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
Issue with Sony MDR-1ABT Bluetooth headphones:
Once paired, the headphones will be connected automatically whenever they are
switched on. However when connected this way, only the HSP/HFP profile will
work and trying to change to A2DP in sound settings does nothing.
If the headphones are then manually disconnected and reconnected from
Bluetooth settings, they will initially use HSP/HFP but then selecting A2DP in
sound settings will successfully make them use A2DP.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1845046] Re: Bluetooth headphones/speaker default to low quality headset mode and fails to switch to A2DP when selected

2019-12-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Progress, and some bad news... Testing with Sony WH-1000XM3 I can
reproduce the bug easily. But it's not a recent regression if at all.
The same bug occurs in an original Ubuntu 18.04 install without any
updates.

I'm tempted to clarify that Sony WH-1000XM3 is our main test case here.
Any future fix might benefit multiple different models, but it seems the
WH-1000XM3 is presently very popular and is what the original
reporter(s) of three quarters of these bug reports are using.
