[Touch-packages] [Bug 1891515] Re: ucf overwrites diverted configuration file breaking unattended upgrades - upstream fix available

2020-10-03 Thread Mathew Hodson
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/ucf/3.0040
---

ucf (3.0040) unstable; urgency=medium

  * This is a feature add release, for the most part
  * Bug fix: "Add support for creating files with default SELinux
context", thanks to Christian Göttsche (Closes: #949314).
  * Bug fix: "please consider merge request #1 adding
ucf_helper_functions", thanks to Marc Haber (Closes: #930130).
  * Bug fix: "ucf has /bin/bash shebangs but does not depend on bash",
thanks to James Le Cuirot (Closes: #952448). It actually does not need
bash, so this was easy to do.
  * Bug fix: "should respect dpkg-divert", thanks to Timothy G Abbott
(Closes: #43).
  * Bug fix: "[INTL:nl] Dutch translation of debconf messages", thanks to
Frans Spiesschaert (Closes: #926661).

Status in ucf package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in ucf package in Debian:

Bug description:
  An unattended security upgrade (package dovecot-core) failed,
  interrupting mailbox service. The cause was ucf replacing a custom
  configuration file which had been diverted (using dpkg-divert) by a
  custom configuration package.

  Excerpt from /var/log/apt/term.log:
  ---
  Setting up dovecot-core (1:2.2.33.2-1ubuntu4.6) ...
  Replacing config file /etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf.custom with new version
  ucfr: Attempt from package dovecot-core to take
/etc/dovecot/dovecot.conf.custom away from package custom-mail-server
  ucfr: Aborting.
  dpkg: error processing package dovecot-core (--configure):
   installed dovecot-core package post-installation script subprocess returned
error exit status 4

  According to the upstream bug report at
  https://gcc.gnu.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=96832 this would appear
  to be because of the annotation of getcwd() with the access attribute.
  However, there seems to be some debate about the best way to resolve
  this (whether in glibc or in the callers of getcwd, ie nss) for now I
  propose to just disable this check via the use of gcc's #pragma
  directive.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  libgweather 3.36.1 is a bug-fix release as part of GNOME 3.36.

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/libgweather/-/blob/gnome-3-36/NEWS

  This version works around the unavailability of the NOAA weather
  services by using very short-term forecasts as current weather
  conditions.

  Sometimes the current weather is not available because the NOAA
  weather servers aren't working correctly. Version 3.36.1 fixes the
  unavailability of current temperature in some locations.

  [Test case]

  Make sure that gnome-weather is still working properly and the weather
  in gnome-shell is shown when gnome-weather is installed.

  [Regression potential]

  The regression potential is low since the changes in version 3.36.1
  are small.

  [Other]

  libgweather 3.36.1 has been successfully built as a no-change backport
  from Groovy to Focal in my PPA and runs fine:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2020-10-03 Thread John
Found a lot reports via google looking up "XDG_RUNTIME_DIR (/run/user/999) is
not owned by us (uid 0), but by uid 999! (This could e.g. happen if you try to
connect to a non-root PulseAudio as a root user, over the native protocol.
Don't do that.)"

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1871268] Re: Installation fails when "Install Third-Party Drivers" is selected

2020-10-03 Thread John
I have this issue as well on a Lenovo T420s installing a freshly downloaded
20.04.01 LTS image. What's the easiest way to post or collect logs in such
cases?
I wanted to upload all logs but I can add only a single attachement to this
message.

Unfortunately, your bug report does not include enough information for
us to act on it. It shows that the libpam0g package is in state 'half-
installed', but does not show why it got that way.

Please attach /var/log/apt/term.log from your system.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1898072] Re: no sound

2020-10-03 Thread william backus
continue to ponder pavucontrol and now udev. my clean install ubuntu 20
lts did not find my built-in audio so i have posted to the bug site
hoping you will have previously sorted this. i am guessing udev is not
finding sound setup, did not correctly populate alsa and is currently
not correctly populating pavucontrol setttings.

i do not want to start editing conf files using pacmd. really wanted a
strategy that would automatically repopulate the settings. i am just
experienced enough to brick this install...a bad thing.

i realize you are sorting out issues for the greater population. ubuntu
20 lts is almost completely functional. i can manually configure gui
pavucontrol on each start and go on with life. i have a week's worth of
data and config under my belt and do not intend to restore my clone or
investigate other flavors linux.

the previous 4 years of ubuntu 16 lts was not without its quirks...and
the decades of windoze, mac and even in late 80's an ibm pc. i no
longer have to deal with vertical market software for the architctural
industry and have fully converted all my office apps to libreoffice.

i don't want to be a weiner...i am a greyhair, retired and just tired of
messing with confusers. hope my comments are useful as you continue to
develop ubuntu 20lts.

now for something completely different: national lampoon magazine from
1971 subscription ads "you may already be a weiner" and "buy this
magazine or we will shoot the dog"

  no sound issue

  4 years using ubuntu 16.04. weekend 9.26.20 clean install ubuntu
  20.04.01. planned 3 days install. day one clone and full ext hd backup
  all files. day two clean install, paste files and use clean system.
  all mostly works but no sound from prior working setup. day 3
  troubleshoot sound, install new versions of apps from prior working
  system.

  seems no sound is a very common issue. ubuntu/settings/sound not
  showing my outup options, being locked to an hdmi ouput was baffling
  and i considered restoring my clone except for the 2 days of
  sucessfully transferring my files. i am satisfied the system is
  functional for my core uses so i will continue to try to work this
  sound issue.

  politely asking for advice from community. no shouting here and i do
  appreciate help.

  the following is my no sound experience on day 3 of clean install:

  ubuntu/settings/audio. only showed hdmi output device, everything else
  blank.

  00:14.2 Audio device: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] SBx00 Azalia
(Intel HDA)

  tried online advice:
  search pci devices
  kill alsa, reinstall
  kill pulseaudio, reinstall

  alsamixer: turned up/on everything, finally speaker feeback for
  alsamixer loopback setting so i knew sound was capable of something.

  pulseaudio, tried every random setting. finally the setting "analog
  surround 4.1 ouput + analog stereo input (unplugged) (unavailable)"
  setting worked normally thru my audio jacks.

  now pulseaudio does not save these settings thru shutdown.
  whaaa? relief! baffled. reluctant to touch anything else because it
works...so far.

  went thru pulseaudio settings files, seems almost all options are
  commented out. i pasted these files at end this message.

  alsa mixer keeps settings. ubuntu/settings/audio still only shows hdmi
  output device, everything else blank.

  now i am considering online advice to kill and reset all pulseaudio.

  Reset PulseAudio If the system is not playing audio, first try reseting the
pulseaudio daemon: systemctl --user restart pulseaudio Applications may need to
be restarted. If this fails then try removing the user configuration files for
PulseAudio: rm -r ~/.config/pulse Then, kill all instances of PulseAudio:
pulseaudio -k When PulseAudio starts again (which it should do automatically),
it will create new configuration files.
  https://support.system76.com/articles/audio/

  sound output works if i manually reset pulseaudio after start. i am
  not confident to blast away or edit conf or daemon files. i would like
  working pulseaudio settings to survive restart and i would prefer
  ubuntu/settings/audio reflect actual settings. thanks in advance for
  suggestions/comments.

  following are existing pulseaudio files:

  william@william-Studio-XPS-7100:/etc/pulse$ tree

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1806407] Re: Mobile broadband SIM doesn't work but does on same machine booted into Windows

2020-10-03 Thread Rob Davis
Thrilled to confirm that this now works in Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS 64bit I
have checked today.

Thank you so, so much.

Will update with more details on:
https://askubuntu.com/questions/1079689/mobile-broadband-sim-doesnt-
work-with-ubuntu-18-04-but-does-work-in-same-device

SIM hardware is detected following and it's then just a case of going
through the wizard setup dialog Windows that is displayed after you
click on your mobile networking symbol on top right or from the top
right drop down.

Title:
  Mobile broadband SIM doesn't work but does on same machine booted into
  Windows

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  I am trying to use a mobile broadband sim with my TabletPC running
  Ubuntu 18.04, but it doesn't work, I get: "Connection Failed:
  Activation of network connection failed" when trying to connect with
  it. HOWEVER, if I boot this same TabletPC into Windows 10, the sim
  works fine. So it is not a problem with the SIM nor a problem the
  TabletPC hardware. It is a problem with Ubuntu.

  Can I ask what testing/Quality Assurance (QA) you did on Ubuntu for
  mobile broadband and where your testing records are kept?

  Further details here:

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1079689/mobile-broadband-sim-doesnt-work-with-ubuntu-18-04-but-does-work-in-same-device

  "I have a Panasonic FZ-G1 MkIII Toughpad touchscreen tablet PC which
  is based on an x86-64bit Intel® Core™ i5-5300U CPU @ 2.30GHz, with 4Gb
  RAM.

  This is dual-booted with Windows 10 Pro 64bit (build 1803) and Ubuntu
  18.04.1 LTS 64bit.

  The mobile sim is a standard giffgaff sim which works fine in Windows
  on this machine - it is recognised and internet access via it works,
  detected as LTE (4G). So this proves that the sim is working correctly
  with the WLAN modem hardware in this tablet.

  However, when the same tablet is booted into Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS 64bit,
  the same sim that worked in the Windows partition, does not work in
  Ubuntu. Error message: "Connection Failed: Activation of network
  connection failed" pops up when attempting connection via Settings. "

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1898361] [NEW] Output format of 'date' command has changed and breaks scripts

2020-10-03 Thread Olaf Seibert
Public bug reported:

I just updated my remote server to 20.04.1 (from 18.04.x), and now the
date command outputs the time like so:

$ date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:00:20 PM CEST

with AM/PM, instead of the 24-hour format it used before.

This breaks scripts that rely on the output from the date command (and
also users who are used to 24 hour format are highly annoyed).

My locale is pretty default:

$ locale
LANG=en_US.UTF-8
LANGUAGE=
LC_CTYPE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NUMERIC="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TIME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_COLLATE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MONETARY="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MESSAGES="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_PAPER="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_NAME="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ADDRESS="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_TELEPHONE="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_MEASUREMENT="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_IDENTIFICATION="en_US.UTF-8"
LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8

One would think that changing LC_TIME might influence the output:

$ LC_TIME=C date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:01:56 PM CEST

No, it doesn't. Nor do LC_NUMERIC, LC_MESSAGES, etc:

$ LC_NUMERIC=C date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:02:36 PM CEST
$ LC_MESSAGES=C date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:02:41 PM CEST
$ LC_CTYPE=C date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:02:47 PM CEST
$ LC_MEASUREMENT=C date
Sat 03 Oct 2020 03:03:12 PM CEST

Only LC_ALL seems to have an influence:

$ LC_ALL=C date
Sat Oct  3 15:03:19 CEST 2020

This seems wrong. At least LC_TIME should have an effect here, and it
would be even better if basic system utilities didn't just randomly
change their output format.

Please change it back.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1894881] Re: [XPS 13 9300, Realtek ALC289, Speaker, Internal] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2020-10-03 Thread fedus
Just happened again. I mostly get the "No response from codec" messages
from above, but this actually the slightly different first line when the
errors begin:

Oct  3 11:40:45 fedell kernel: [8.819040] snd_hda_intel
:00:1f.3: azx_get_response timeout, switching to polling mode: last
cmd=0x202f8100

After this, the log fills up with

Oct  3 11:40:47 fedell kernel: [   10.839052] snd_hda_intel
:00:1f.3: No response from codec, resetting bus: last cmd=0x202f8100

and so on.

At the very beginning of the log, the soundcard seemsto be detected fine:

2020-10-03 Thread Marius
Same problem on Ubuntu 20.04 with Linux 5.4.0-48-generic x86_64.

Using Linux 5.4.0-42-generic x86_64 fixes the problem though.
