Title:
  wpa can't connect to servers using TLS 1.1 or older

Status in wpa package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in wpa source package in Jammy:
  Confirmed
Status in wpa package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
  wpa built with in openssl3 fails to connect to TLS 1.1 or lower server

  those uses MD5-SHA1 as digest in its signature algorithm which no
  longer meets OpenSSL default level of security of 80 bits

  http://lists.infradead.org/pipermail/hostap/2022-May/040563.html

  Workaround are described in #22 and #36 by basically using
  CipherString = DEFAULT@SECLEVEL=0

  which lowers the security level

  ---

  With the current jammy version of wpasupplicant (2:2.10-1), I cannot
  connect to the WPA Enterprise network eduroam, which is used by
  Universities worldwide. I get a "Connection failed" message or a
  request to re-enter the password.

  - I've re-tried the credentials: no fix ;-)

  - Tried a 21.10 live session on the same machine: works fine!

  - Manually downgraded wpasupplicant to the impish version
  (2:2.9.0-21build1): connected normally.

  - Upgraded wpasupplicant to the latest version: fails to connect
  again.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1974261] Re: After updating to Ubuntu 22.04 I could not boot.

2022-05-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It sounds like "acpi_backlight=vendor
acpi_osi=linux" is the main issue here but I can't tell if adding it was
the fix, or removing it was the fix. Which was it?

I ended up fixing the issue by going into recovery mode and changing the

I forgot to update the grub. After rebooting the issue was fixed.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1973467] Re: [nvidia] Screen Blank: External screen is not turned off

Title:
  [nvidia] Screen Blank: External screen is not turned off

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  In Power -> Power Saving Options -> Screen Blank - the option states
  that the screen will be turned off after some period, which is what
  I'd expect from a sleep mode.

  I have a hybrid system. I have disabled the internal display and I use
  the external connected via HDMI (and I believe it is connected to the
  NVIDIA GPU). When the screen goes blank the external monitor is not
  turned off really. It goes blank but it is still turned on and glows,
  so no power is saved.

dlls/winmm/libwinmm.cross.a --export \
../wine-6.0.4/dlls/winmm/winmm.spec

  Due to dlltool using names like winmm_dll_t.s and winmm_dll_t.o for
  it's temp file - these are not unique when building libwinmm.delay.a
  and libwinmm.cross.a in parallel. (This can of course affect any dll
  wine is building import libs for, winmm is just the one I happaned to
  get caught on).

  This is regression newly introduced in binutils 2.38 vs older versions
  which used getpid() as the basis of their temp name. We just
  encountered it as part of updating our CI for a winelib application
  from focal to jammy, but it seems to have been discovered by others
  already: see https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=28885

  There is an upstream fix on master (2.39) which is already backported
  to the binutils-2_38 branch:
  https://sourceware.org/git/gitweb.cgi?p=binutils-
  gdb.git;h=99852365513266afdd793289813e8e565186c9e6, so it should just
  be a matter of cherry-picking. Hopefully the fact it's a regression
  from impish->jammy and that upstream already backported it to 2.38
  might make this a candidate for jammy-updates?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1971901] Re: dlltool uses non-unique temp filenames

2022-05-19 Thread Kevin Puetz
Linking binutils package and subscribing Mattias Klose since
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/binutils/2.38-4ubuntu1 mentions
"Update from the binutils 2.38 branch: Fix PR 28885" and so a rebuild
based on binutils-source_2.38-4ubuntu1 would fix this issue.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1974196] Re: Installing libudev1 on a new Jammy installation uninstalls many packages.

2022-05-19 Thread Tully
Not that the above short list of uninstalled packages is in the minimal
example that I compiled to isolate the smallest footprint possible.
Those packages are requirements for `ubuntu-standard` and on a standard
system will remove most of `ubuntu-desktop` leaving the computer
effectively nonoperational with systemd and all it's dependencies
removed.

  Installing libudev1 on a new Jammy installation uninstalls many

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  On an Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system created using the current

  installing the package libudev1 results in a large number of critical
  packages being removed and rendering the system essentially unusable.

  https://github.com/tfoote/udevdebug/blob/main/Dockerfile is a Dockerfile
which also demonstrates the issue.
  Building the image, which will install udev 249.11-0ubuntu3 and init 1.62,
and then running `apt install libudev1` in the generated image results in

  The following packages will be REMOVED:
libnss-systemd libpam-systemd systemd-timesyncd udev
  The following packages will be upgraded:
libudev1

  This is completely prevented by ensuring that updates are installed from the
jammy-updates repository before installing any additional packages and that is
almost certainly the correct thing to do. But this is a punishing result for
such a mistake.

  I would expect the installation to either force the upgrade of the
  other systemd packages or refuse to install libudev1 at the incorrect
  version relative to the other systemd packages until the system is
  upgraded.

  We found this out via a user report for ROS 2 Humble which is

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958267] Re: wpa can't connect to servers using TLS 1.1 or older

could you report a new bug about the hotspot issue including a debug
log? there is also bug #1972790 and
https://mail.gnome.org/archives/networkmanager-
list/2022-March/msg00016.html which is going to be fixing in the next
network-manager but if downgrading wpa resolves the issue for you then
it's probably another bug

Somewhat related, using a NetworkManager Wifi Hotspot, latest Apple
devices refuse to connect unless I downgrade to Impish version of
wpa_supplicant and libssl1.1.

Other workarounds detailed here do not solve it.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1974230] [NEW] Negative cache results from dnsmasq do not include SOA as required in RFC2308

2022-05-19 Thread Eric Blevins
Public bug reported:

RFC2308 states:
6 - Negative answers from the cache

   When a server, in answering a query, encounters a cached negative
   response it MUST add the cached SOA record to the authority section
   of the response with the TTL decremented by the amount of time it was
   stored in the cache. This allows the NXDOMAIN / NODATA response to
   time out correctly.

The effect is that the negative cache results returned by dnsmasq cannot
be cached by other resolvers such as systemd-resolved.

A good example of why this is a problem:
Two clients with systemd-resolved send DNS queries to dnsmasq for the same
record
The first one makes a query and gets NXDOMAIN with SOA.
This results in systemd-resolved caching the negative result.

The second client makes a query and gets NODATA without the SOA.
This results in systemd-resolved not caching the negative result.

Consider a domain name that only has an A record published.
When connecting to that domain a lookup happens for the and A record.
One can end up in a situation where systemd-resolved has the A record cached
locally, but it still goes out to the network to perform the lookup only
to get the same negative cache result that is missing the SOA

I see this behavior in 18.04 and 22.04

First query to dnsmasq can be cached:
dig @10.0.1.21 a.google.com

Title:
  Crash when using DIGEST-MD5 with SSF>=128

Status in cyrus-sasl2 package in Ubuntu:

Status in cyrus-sasl2 package in Debian:
  New

Bug description:
  I'm still troubleshooting this, but at the moment apps negotiating a
  DIGEST-MD5 authentication and requesting some form of transport
  encryption (ssf != 0) are crashing. The only example I have so far is
  the openldap client tools (so just one app really).

  ssf=0 works:
  $ ldapwhoami  -U ubuntu@lxd -w ubuntusecret -O maxssf=0
  SASL/DIGEST-MD5 authentication started
  SASL username: ubuntu@lxd
  SASL SSF: 0
  dn:uid=ubuntu@lxd,cn=vms,cn=digest-md5,cn=auth

  ssf=128 crashes:

  SASL/DIGEST-MD5 authentication started
  SASL username: ubuntu@lxd
  SASL SSF: 128
  SASL data security layer installed.
  Segmentation fault (core dumped)

  The crash seems to be inside openssl. I'll get a proper stack trace.

  2.1.27, also built with openssl3, does not crash. So far only 2.1.28
  (in kinetic-proposed).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1958019]

2022-05-19 Thread cam
Created attachment 300990
attachment-14829-0.html

 From your alsa-info (thanks!), I see that your subsystem id is 0x3822
compared to the 0x1813 of the 15IMHG05.

In the root of the linux source folder/directory, open the file:
sound/pci/hda/patch_realtek.c

Find this line:
SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x17aa, 0x3813, "Legion 7i 15IMHG05",
ALC287_FIXUP_LEGION_15IMHG05_SPEAKERS),

Next to that line (before or after doesn't matter), add your own line:
SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x17aa, 0x3822, "Legion 7i 15IMH5",
ALC287_FIXUP_LEGION_15IMHG05_SPEAKERS),

If the ALC287_FIXUP_LEGION_15IMHG05_SPEAKERS fix doesn't work for your
laptop, try theALC287_FIXUP_YOGA7_14ITL_SPEAKERS fix as well. Ie,
SND_PCI_QUIRK(0x17aa, 0x3822, "Legion 7i 15IMH5",
ALC287_FIXUP_YOGA7_14ITL_SPEAKERS),

But given the similarities between our laptop models, I strongly suspect
the 15IMHG05 fix will work for your laptop as well.

Looks like you're running linux Mint, which, IIRC, is based on Debian or
Ubuntu. For deb based distributions, you can build packages for your
kernel like this:
make bindeb-pkg

You only really need the linux-image and linux-headers (for Nvidia)
packages. To speed up the compile, you can pass in the -j option to
parallelize the build:
make -j$(nproc) bindeb-pkg

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1937110] Re: dhcp option 121 & 249

2022-05-19 Thread sascha arthur
Funny thing is that the rfc 3442 is from 2002.

Thats what makes me wonder of the missing support till today...

My workarround till today is to unzip the iso -> kernel+initrd, patch
the initrd, and use the patched initrd.

I would not recommend anyone to do it like that, only if theres no other
options..

Title:
  dhcp option 121 & 249

Status in subiquity:
  New
Status in busybox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I'm running into issues with subiquity on a cloud provider. The cloud
  provider is using an on-link L3 gateway.

  His DHCP response looks like this:

  OPTION:  53 (  1) DHCP message type 5 (DHCPACK)
  OPTION:  54 (  4) Server identifier 172.31.1.1
  OPTION:  51 (  4) IP address leasetime  86400 (24h)
  OPTION:   1 (  4) Subnet mask   255.255.255.255
  OPTION:   3 (  4) Routers   172.31.1.1
  OPTION:   6 ( 12) DNS server
  OPTION: 121 ( 14) Classless Static Route20ac1f010100  ...
ac1f0101 ..
  OPTION: 249 ( 14) MSFT - Classless route20ac1f010100  ...
ac1f0101 ..

  Im booting the subiquity process with an patched ipxe
(https://github.com/ipxe/ipxe/pull/104) like this:

  #!ipxe
  kernel .../vmlinuz initrd=initrd root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=150 ip=dhcp
url=https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/focal/daily-live/current/focal-live-server-amd64.iso
 autoinstall ds=nocloud-net;s=.../...-ad-78/ cloud-config-url=/dev/null
  initrd .../initrd
  boot

  initrd/vmlinuz is extracted right out of focal-live-server-amd64.iso

  Sadly subiquity is stuck with a broken network (because of missing
  dhcp option 121/249 support). It happens when its running the /init
  from the kernel right after kernel is booted, i guess even before the
  subiquity is started(?).

  After further debugging, it looks like the provided kernel 5.4.80 #90
  Ubuntu, is using busybox 1.30.1-4ubuntu~6.3 which includes isc-
  dhclient-4.4.1 which is lacking the given options.

  Would be awesome if this could be fixed.. maybe just a simple busybox compile
option?

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Ubuntu 22.04 does not support Intel DG2-based hw which is released
  later this year.

  [Fix]

  Mesa: needs a bunch of patches backported to 22.0.x, will be upstream in 22.1
or 22.2
  kernel: use a dkms provided by Intel and integrated in the OEM kernel source,
the module will be shipped in a separate modules package

  [Test case]

  Boot a system with a DG2-based GPU, check that native graphics drivers
  are used.

  Test mesa also on gen9-gen12 GPU's to verify that there are no
  regressions even though the backports are for DG2.

  [What could go wrong]

  The Mesa patches are only for DG2 support, should not affect other
  hardware at all. The kernel driver is in a separate package which
  isn't installed by default except preinstall machines with this
  hardware. So other users are not affected.

  Update gdb to the final 12.1 release in 22.04 LTS. jammy ships with
  the gdb 12.1 release candidate, taken from the gdb-12 branch. Changes
  up to the final release are:

   - updated gnulib library
   - Fix for PR mi/29002 (Windows only)
   - gdb: fix 'remote show FOO-packet' aliases
   - various testsuite fixes
   - fixing compiler warnings
   - Fix bug in Ada number lexing
   - Remove "Ada Settings" node from the manual
   - Handle TLS variable lookups when using separate debug files.
   - PR 28980: gdb: don't copy entirely optimized out values in value_copy
   - gdb/mi: fix use after free of frame_info causing spurious notifications

  Comparing the test results between the two builds doesn't show any
  regression on any architecture.

Title:
  Installing libudev1 on a new Jammy installation uninstalls many
  packages.

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  On an Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system created using the current
  installation image without enabling package updates over the network,
  installing the package libudev1 results in a large number of critical
  packages being removed and rendering the system essentially unusable.

  https://github.com/tfoote/udevdebug/blob/main/Dockerfile is a Dockerfile
which also demonstrates the issue.

  I would expect the installation to either force the upgrade of the
  other systemd packages or refuse to install libudev1 at the incorrect
  version relative to the other systemd packages until the system is
  upgraded.

  We found this out via a user report for ROS 2 Humble which is
  releasing on top of Ubuntu 22.04 next week:
  https://github.com/ros2/ros2/issues/1272

Title:
  dhcp option 121 & 249

Status in subiquity:
  New
Status in busybox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello,

  I'm running into issues with subiquity on a cloud provider. The cloud
  provider is using an on-link L3 gateway.

  His DHCP response looks like this:

  OPTION:  53 (  1) DHCP message type 5 (DHCPACK)
  OPTION:  54 (  4) Server identifier 172.31.1.1
  OPTION:  51 (  4) IP address leasetime  86400 (24h)
  OPTION:   1 (  4) Subnet mask   255.255.255.255
  OPTION:   3 (  4) Routers   172.31.1.1
  OPTION:   6 ( 12) DNS server
  OPTION: 121 ( 14) Classless Static Route20ac1f010100  ...
ac1f0101 ..
  OPTION: 249 ( 14) MSFT - Classless route20ac1f010100  ...
ac1f0101 ..

  Im booting the subiquity process with an patched ipxe
(https://github.com/ipxe/ipxe/pull/104) like this:

  #!ipxe
  kernel .../vmlinuz initrd=initrd root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=150 ip=dhcp
url=https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/focal/daily-live/current/focal-live-server-amd64.iso
 autoinstall ds=nocloud-net;s=.../...-ad-78/ cloud-config-url=/dev/null
  initrd .../initrd
  boot

  initrd/vmlinuz is extracted right out of focal-live-server-amd64.iso

  Update gdb to the final 12.1 release in 22.04 LTS. jammy ships with
  the gdb 12.1 release candidate, taken from the gdb-12 branch. Changes
  up to the final release are:

   - updated gnulib library
   - Fix for PR mi/29002 (Windows only)
   - gdb: fix 'remote show FOO-packet' aliases
   - various testsuite fixes
   - fixing compiler warnings
   - Fix bug in Ada number lexing
   - Remove "Ada Settings" node from the manual
   - Handle TLS variable lookups when using separate debug files.
   - PR 28980: gdb: don't copy entirely optimized out values in value_copy
   - gdb/mi: fix use after free of frame_info causing spurious notifications

  Comparing the test results between the two builds doesn't show any
  regression on any architecture.

  3. run "sudo tasksel" and deselect "virtual machine host"

  4. watch how tasksel uninstalls your system

  OBSERVATIONS

  What seems to happen is that apt vengefully removes ALL of the items
  associated with one task, including several base dependencies of other
  tasks (e.g. ubuntu-desktop)

  One illustrative example is the openssh-server task:
  This one includes the packages openssh-server, tcpd and libwrap0.
  From a normal ubuntu-desktop (e.g. ~liveCD) both tcpd and libwrap0 are
already installed, and the task-install pulls in only openssh-server.
  However when the task is removed, all these three packages (openssh-server,
tcpd and libwrap0) are forcefully removed.
  Since libwrap0 is a core dependency of gnome, a large part of gnome will be
removed alongside the removal of the task.

  OpenSSL servers can send a non-empty status_request in a
  CertificateRequest

Status in openssl package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in openssl source package in Bionic:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  openssl does not conform to RFC8446, Sec. 4.4.2.1., by sending a
  CertificateRequest message to the client with a non-empty
  status_request extension.

  This issue was fixed in openssl-1.1.1d and is included in Focal
  onward.

  Upstream issue is tracked at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/9767
  Upstream patch review at https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/9780

  The issue leads to various client failures with TLS 1.3 as described
  in, e.g.

  https://github.com/golang/go/issues/35722
  https://github.com/golang/go/issues/34040

  [Test Plan]

  The issue can be reproduced by building with `enable-ssl-trace`
  and then running `s_server` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_server -key key.pem -cert cert.pem -status_file
test/recipes/ocsp-response.der -Verify 5
  ```

  And running `s_client` like this:

  ```
  openssl s_client -status -trace -cert cert.pem -key key.pem
  ```

  The output shows a `status_request` extension in the
  `CertificateRequest` as follows:

  Received Record
  Header:
    Version = TLS 1.2 (0x303)
    Content Type = ApplicationData (23)
    Length = 1591
    Inner Content Type = Handshake (22)
  CertificateRequest, Length=1570
    request_context (len=0):
    extensions, length = 1567
  extension_type=status_request(5), length=1521

0..1.0...UG
  ...more lines omitted...

  If the `status_request` extension is present in a
  `CertificateRequest` then it must be empty according to RFC8446,
  Sec. 4.4.2.1.

  [Where problems could occur]

  The patch disables the `status_request` extension inside a
  `CertificateRequest`. Applications expecting the incorrect,
  non-empty reply for the `status_request` extension will break
  with this patch.

  Hello,

  I'm running into issues with subiquity on a cloud provider. The cloud
  provider is using an on-link L3 gateway.

  OPTION:  53 (  1) DHCP message type 5 (DHCPACK)

ac1f0101 ..
  OPTION: 249 ( 14) MSFT - Classless route20ac1f010100  ...
ac1f0101 ..

  Im booting the subiquity process with an patched ipxe
(https://github.com/ipxe/ipxe/pull/104) like this:

  #!ipxe
  kernel .../vmlinuz initrd=initrd root=/dev/ram0 ramdisk_size=150 ip=dhcp
url=https://cdimage.ubuntu.com/ubuntu-server/focal/daily-live/current/focal-live-server-amd64.iso
 autoinstall ds=nocloud-net;s=.../...-ad-78/ cloud-config-url=/dev/null
  initrd .../initrd
  boot

  initrd/vmlinuz is extracted right out of focal-live-server-amd64.iso

  Sadly subiquity is stuck with a broken network (because of missing
  dhcp option 121/249 support). It happens when its running the /init
  from the kernel right after kernel is booted, i guess even before the
  subiquity is started(?).

  After further debugging, it looks like the provided kernel 5.4.80 #90
  Ubuntu, is using busybox 1.30.1-4ubuntu~6.3 which includes isc-
  dhclient-4.4.1 which is lacking the given options.

  Would be awesome if this could be fixed.. maybe just a simple busybox compile
option?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1937110] Re: dhcp option 121 & 249

2022-05-19 Thread Mathew Binkley
I just wanted to say that we are also hitting the same problem (lack of
dhcp option 121/249). So Subiquity connects to the network, but can't
get a default route and thus fails.

Couple this with the removal of debian-installer support from Ubuntu,
and we can no longer install Ubuntu Jammy LTS. This is a showstopper
bug for us.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1974196] [NEW] Installing libudev1 on a new Jammy installation uninstalls many packages.

2022-05-19 Thread nuclearsandwich
Public bug reported:

On an Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system created using the current installation
image without enabling package updates over the network, installing the
package libudev1 results in a large number of critical packages being
removed and rendering the system essentially unusable.

https://github.com/tfoote/udevdebug/blob/main/Dockerfile is a Dockerfile which
also demonstrates the issue.
Building the image, which will install udev 249.11-0ubuntu3 and init 1.62, and
then running `apt install libudev1` in the generated image results in

The following packages will be REMOVED:
  libnss-systemd libpam-systemd systemd-timesyncd udev
The following packages will be upgraded:
  libudev1

This is completely prevented by ensuring that updates are installed from the
jammy-updates repository before installing any additional packages and that is
almost certainly the correct thing to do. But this is a punishing result for
such a mistake.

I would expect the installation to either force the upgrade of the other
systemd packages or refuse to install libudev1 at the incorrect version
relative to the other systemd packages until the system is upgraded.

We found this out via a user report for ROS 2 Humble which is releasing
on top of Ubuntu 22.04 next week:
https://github.com/ros2/ros2/issues/1272

** Affects: systemd (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

  Some sysctls are ignored on boot

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: procps

  /etc/init.d/procps.sh comes too early in the boot process to apply a
  lot of sysctl's. As it runs before networking modules are loaded and
  filesystems are mounted, there are quite a lot of commonly-used
  sysctl's which are simply ignored on boot and produce errors to the
  console.

  Simply renaming the symlink from S17 to > S40 probably isn't a great
  solution, as there are probably folk who want and expect some sysctl's
  to be applied before filesystems are mounted and so on. However,
  simply ugnoring something as important as sysctl settings isn't really
  on. Administrators expect the settings in /etc/sysctl.conf to take
  effect.

  One sto-gap solution would be to run sysctl -p twice; once at S17 and once at
S41. There may still be some warnings and errors, but everything would be
applied. A different, more complex approach might be to re-architect the sysctl
configuration into something like;

  /etc/sysctl.d/$modulename

  and have the userland module-loading binaries take care of applying
  them after modules are loaded. Though this may take care of explicitly
  loaded modules only, I'm not sure.

  Incidentally, /etc/sysctl.conf still refers to
  /etc/networking/options, but hasn't that been deprecated?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1972115] Re: ubuntu-bug exits after dialog instead of sending data

2022-05-19 Thread Ralf Sternberg
This bug seems to prevent me from providing a crash log in
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1973802.

Is there any alternative way of attaching a crash log to a bug report?
Attachment doesn't work, apparently because of the file size. Thanks.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1947588] Re: Infinite Loop in OpenSSL s_server

2022-05-19 Thread Matt Caswell
FYI, upstream have now also merged a fix in the 1.1.1 branch:

https://github.com/openssl/openssl/commit/e04ba889594d84a8805f3d0caeadf0527470e508

If Ubuntu pulls in that patch I expect that this bug should be fixed by
it.

Title:
  Random noises with 5.13.0-37-generic and later but not with
  5.13.0-35-generic

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  After a recent update to linux-image-5.13.0-37-generic, I started
  experiencing random noises about every five seconds. After rebooting
  into linux-image-5.13.0-35-generic, the noises were gone.

  Some details that I've noticed:

  1. When launching pulseaudio manually, not as a daemon, the problem
  disappears.

  2. If I set the log-level in /etc/pulse/daemon.conf to debug and
  reload it, the log has a lot of:

  Mar 23 17:22:44 ainar-ThinkPad-X13-Gen-1 pulseaudio[76435]: Wakeup from ALSA!
  Mar 23 17:22:43 ainar-ThinkPad-X13-Gen-1 pulseaudio[76435]: Wakeup from ALSA!
  Mar 23 17:22:39 ainar-ThinkPad-X13-Gen-1 pulseaudio[76435]: Wakeup from ALSA!
  Mar 23 17:22:38 ainar-ThinkPad-X13-Gen-1 pulseaudio[76435]: Wakeup from ALSA!

  Which roughly correspond with the noises.

  3.  The usual "rm -f -r ~/.config/pulse && pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa
  force-reload" doesn't seem to help. Only a kernel downgrade does.

  4. This happens both in Firefox (where I first noticed it) as well as
  in Totem and in system sounds.

  5. I tried to report the bug using "ubuntu-bug audio", but it showed
  me six inputs of which three looked the same, and for each of them it
  told me that it pulseaudio wasn't configured to use it. I'm ready to
  collect logs and other info within the next days.

  * This is because compressBound() is not adjusted for DFLTCC.

  [Fix]

  * Adjust compressBound() for DFLTCC like it's already done
    for deflateBound().

  * Since zlib project does not accept patches at the moment,
    the fix has been integrated into the DFLTCC pull request:
    https://github.com/madler/zlib/pull/410
    The commitid is b25781e735363e04f6c56e21431c47e4afc50b17.

  * The fix extracted out of the above is:

https://launchpadlibrarian.net/589857296/debdiff_zlib_1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu7_to_zlib_1.2.11.dfsg-2ubuntu8_jammy.diff

  [Test Plan]

  * An IBM z15 system (LPAR, z/VM guest or KVM virtual machine)
    with Ubuntu Server 21.10 (or 22.04).

  * A test can be done based on the following C test program:
    #include
    #include
    #include
    int main() {
    Bytef in_buf[128], out_buf[1024];
    for (size_t i = 0; i < sizeof(in_buf); i++)
    in_buf[i] = rand();
    uLongf dest_len = compressBound(sizeof(in_buf));
    assert(dest_len <= sizeof(out_buf));
    int ret = compress(out_buf, &dest_len,
   in_buf, sizeof(in_buf));
    assert(ret == Z_OK);
    }

  * The test needs to be done by IBM, due to the requirements
    for the special z15 hardware.

  * A successful test was just completed, based on the version in jammy-
  proposed, which is at the same code level that the impish version this
  SRU is targeted for.

  [Where problems could occur]

  * If the adjustment of compressBound() for DFLTCC is done
    erroneously the issue can still be present or in worst case
    even affect Z systems other than z15 only.

  * The compression can become errorneous with the new changes,
    e.g. in compressBound.

  * Mistakes in dfltcc_free_window OF and especially DEFLATE_BOUND_COMPLEN,
    (incl. the bit definitions), may cause various and unforseen defects.

  * Any build time issues that might have been introduced by this patch
    can be identified by a test build; this was done and is available here:
    https://launchpad.net/~fheimes/+archive/ubuntu/lp1961427

  [Other Info]

  * Ubuntu jammy, impish and focal are affected.

  Description: zlib: compressBound() returns an incorrect result on z15
  Symptom: Passing the result of compressBound() to compress()
     results in an error code.
  Problem: compressBound() is not adjusted for DFLTCC.
  Solution: Adjust compressBound() for DFLTCC like it's already done
     for deflateBound(). Since zlib project does not accept
     patches at the moment, the fix has been integrated into
     the DFLTCC pull request:
     https://github.com/madler/zlib/pull/410
     The commitid is b25781e735363e04f6c56e21431c47e4afc50b17.

  Reproduction:  z15 only:
     #include
     #include
     #include
     int main() {
     Bytef in_buf[128], out_buf[1024];
     for (size_t i = 0; i < sizeof(in_buf); i++)
     in_buf[i] = rand();
     uLongf dest_len = compressBound(sizeof(in_buf));
     assert(dest_len <= sizeof(out_buf));
     int ret = compress(out_buf, &dest_len,
    in_buf, sizeof(in_buf));
     assert(ret == Z_OK);
     }

Thank you Nathan, LGTM!

I've also confirmed it to build via sbuild. I did some small

and notably I changed the "jammy" series to "kinetic" and added the LP
bug reference for this bug.
