[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common
I am struggling to see the vulnerability here still - the path used in this case is /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b appears to have a randomly generated suffix and so couldn't have been guessed beforehand nor preseeded with other contents by a local attacker - so the only way then that I can see that this could be a vulnerability would be if this file was world-writable - but it is not clear that this is the case either. Assuming this file comes from debconf, from what I can see in its sources, it creates temporary files via the https://perldoc.perl.org/File::Temp package - which states that files are created with permissions 0600 by default too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to perl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043711 Title: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common Status in perl package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: During update of ubuntu-drivers-common: Can't exec "/tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b": Permission denied at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl-base/IPC/Open3.pm line 178, line 1. open2: exec of /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b configure 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.4 failed: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/ConfModule.pm line 59. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2043944] [NEW] WISHLIST-Make MOD+LEFT|RIGHT great
Public bug reported: Dear Santa, This year I have been augmenting my TTY7 keyboard skillz and in that respect the MOD+arrow key resizing capabilities. As we know pressing MOD+right arrow shall flawlessly redraw the currently selected window into half of the right side of the screen. Based on my user expertise each and every time I invoke it I always always always end up having to ALT+TAB to another window that I will then MOD+left arrow to complement it. And so that I can see both windows simultaneously. My wish for this year is to automate the ALT+TAB part yet I have to ask if this a X feature or if it's a MATE feature or ...? In that respect this as a xorg bug. But back to the problem: Redmond has got this feature implemented already on their end. From our end it just currently looks like it's halfway implemented. If not made a default behavior then for sure there should be a way to allow the automated resizing of a 2nd screen once any combination of the MOD+arrow keys will have been typed. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1951491] Re: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup
I have similar problem with telegram-desktop on Kubuntu 23.10. Before the dist upgrade this snap used to work fine and could be launched from the application launcher. After the upgrade, the snap stopped working and no amount or remove or purge would make it work. I see this in syslog > 2023-11-19T12:31:41.606068-08:00 thinky plasmashell[58460]: /user.slice/user-1000.slice/user@1000.service/app.slice/app- telegram\x2ddesktop_telegram\x2ddesktop-f2dadf1eb5b643f894123a937b68e08c.scope is not a snap cgroup Launching telegram-desktop from the command line works just fine though. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to systemd in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1951491 Title: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup Status in X2Go: New Status in Xpra Terminal Server: New Status in snapd package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in systemd package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in x2goserver package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in snapd package in Debian: New Status in snapd package in Fedora: New Bug description: I just upgraded from hirsute to impish using do-release-upgrade. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium- browser for firefox, and it didn't help: chromium fails with the same error message. I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of snapd that isn't getting noticed or cleared by the impish version? Someone suggested this might be related to bug 1850667, but that bug is marked fixed as of a couple months ago, and I just did this upgrade today. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common
@vorlon, Thank you for your considered response. I concur that this is not a vulnerability in the Ubuntu perl package. While I do not disagree with any of the points you make, the fact remains that processes running as root created a file directly in /tmp not using a safe *mktemp* process and later ran the code in that file. The risks of doing this are sufficiently well understood, as the preferable alternatives. Given that that this quite vanilla Ubuntu system and that this behaviour was only observed as a result of the reasonable and fairly common configuration of mounting `/tmp` with *noexec* and did so while running updates in a fully supported manner, i.e. with *Software Updater*, this remains a bug with a directly associated security risk. That is to say - as you expressed it - this comes from an Ubuntu package, though I don't know which. Do you recommend that I do anything other than change the Package to "debconf" and Status to "New"? @juliank, *apt-utils* is installed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to perl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043711 Title: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common Status in perl package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: During update of ubuntu-drivers-common: Can't exec "/tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b": Permission denied at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl-base/IPC/Open3.pm line 178, line 1. open2: exec of /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b configure 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.4 failed: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/ConfModule.pm line 59. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2029930] Re: wget crash when printing download rate
I have just been able to reproduce it by running this on the same server the website example.org is hosted: cd /tmp while true; do rm -rf www.example.org/ && wget --mirror --page-requisites https://www.example.org 2>&1 | grep -F GB/s; done The 'grep GB/s' makes a point of showing the improbable speeds. It's not unusual to see several dozens or hundreds of GB/s there, like this: 2023-11-19 19:33:57 (116 GB/s) - ‘www.example.org/wp- json/oembed/1.0/embed?url=https:%2F%2Fwww.example.org%2F2023%2F06%2F05%2Fredacted’ saved [2362/2362] That's 2 kB, downloaded at 116 GB/s. Obviously a timer issue. This illustrates it's not hard to occasionally hit some super high TB/s value, which would trigger the crash. With the PPA, running this grepping on TB/s, it took about 30 minutes, but eventually: 2023-11-19 19:34:16 (4.00 TB/s) - ‘www.example.org/wp- json/oembed/1.0/embed?url=https:%2F%2Fwww.example.org%2F2023%2F08%2F19%2Fredacted%2F’ saved [2201/2201] This is all crawling a Wordpress site. There seems to be a higher chance of crawling a dynamic site vs static files, possibly because it doesn't start counting bytes until it has seen the first, and dynamic sites tend to only operate from memory at that point. That's probably also the reason it tends to happen on 2 kB-ish files, because it fits in one or two TCP packets. Probably a simple PHP scripts that prints a few kBytes is enough. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to wget in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2029930 Title: wget crash when printing download rate Status in wget package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in wget source package in Noble: Confirmed Status in wget package in Debian: Confirmed Bug description: All supported versions of Ubuntu suffer from crashes in wget in printing of the download speed. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2043524] Re: audio disappeared after upgrade to Ubuntu 23.10
Same thing is happening here with an Asus Z790. It was working properly on 23.04. Not on 23.10 the sound works like this: HiFi 2.0 - Very low sound. I have to crank the sound to max to barely hear it. HiFi 5.1 - Only the front ones sound (but they sound around 60% when the volume is at 100%, meaning, the actual volume of them is not full). The rear speakers dont even sound. You have to put your ear to the actual speaker to hear it. HiFi 7.1 - The front ones work correctly but any others do not. The headphones still work correctly via bluetooth, but the whole sound experience basically is dead. Everything is either very low or speaker mode or nothing at all. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to pulseaudio in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043524 Title: audio disappeared after upgrade to Ubuntu 23.10 Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I upgraded to Ubuntu 23.10 from 23.04. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common
This is not a security bug, or a bug at all in perl. Software that executes commands under /tmp is not intrinsically insecure. Various hardening guides recommend mounting /tmp noexec because it's harder for programmers to get security handling of files under /tmp *right*; but an attempt to execute a command under /tmp is not evidence that the programmer has gotten it wrong. The perl package did not create the file /tmp/ubuntu-drivers- common.config.55GJ8b and try to execute it. This was done by some other software that then invoked perl to try to execute it. Perl should not refuse to try to execute the command because the path starts with "/tmp", it should do what it has been asked to do. The specific path in use is suggestive of a debconf config script that has been unpacked as part of the apt "pre-configuration" stage and is being run from a temporary directory. However, the normal interface for this is /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure as invoked via /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/70debconf; and dpkg-preconfigure explicitly specifies to extract the config script to /var/cache/debconf/tmp.ci in order to avoid site policies that restrict execution of binaries under /tmp. So I do not know why this script has been unpacked to /tmp on your system; that does not appear to be the normal flow of operation (and also has not been, for decades). Since there is not a confirmed securtiy bug here, and since I don't know where those files on your system came from, I am closing this bug invalid. If you can provide further information that would show this path is coming from an Ubuntu package, it would be appropriate to reopen the bug report and assign it to the corresponding package. I am also marking this as a public non-security bug. ** Changed in: perl (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid ** Information type changed from Private Security to Public -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to perl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2043711 Title: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common Status in perl package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: During update of ubuntu-drivers-common: Can't exec "/tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b": Permission denied at /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/perl-base/IPC/Open3.pm line 178, line 1. open2: exec of /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b configure 1:0.9.6.2~0.22.04.4 failed: Permission denied at /usr/share/perl5/Debconf/ConfModule.pm line 59. NetworkManager and systemd- networkd should not be running at the same time. On desktop, NetworkManager is the default network stack. [Impact] When all interfaces are "not required for online", e.g. when they are marked "optional: true" in netplan, systemd-networkd-wait-online will timeout. Or, in other words, systemd-networkd-wait-online will timeout even though all interfaces are ignored, hence none of them will ever be marked as "ready." Depending on what units depend on network- online.target, this can delay boot by 120 seconds (the default timeout for systemd-networkd-wait-online). [Test Plan] 1. Create a new LXD container. [Where problems could occur] This patch partially re-instates a patch remove in bug 1982218. However, instead of exiting if all links are unmanaged, we exit if all links are ignored in manager_configured(). If the patch was wrong, we may re-introduce bug 1982218, so as part of this SRU verification, that bug should be tested too. Any other regressions would also be related to systemd-networkd-wait-online behavior. [Original Description] On Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system using network-manager and upgrading to systemd 249.11-0ubuntu3.10, wait-online now times out which prevents logins (GDM, ssh, console) until it does time out.
