[Touch-packages] [Bug 1993370] Re: Cannot install proprietary Broadcom WiFi drivers on Ubuntu Studio Jammy 22.04.2 and Kinetic

2023-11-19 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Will do. You'll have to forgive me, I was on a six-month hiatus from
Ubuntu development and wasn't around to verify it at that time. I have
the needed hardware though.

Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in software-properties source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed
Status in software-properties source package in Kinetic:
  Won't Fix

Bug description:
  [Impact]
software-properties-qt will crash when a user tries to install drivers for
Broadcom wireless devices.

This same change has been made in the software-properties-gtk frontend
(see bug 1969460) without any issues.

There are also problems in the Error Tracker for this crash:
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/1c41600298c08b5dfc2d86ee90ad27ef56cd4524
  https://errors.ubuntu.com/problem/49f4156af6d9d2367fc480105e19064da3575269

  [Test Plan]
  1) Install Ubuntu Studio 22.04.3 on a system with Broadcom WiFi
  2) Reboot into the installed sytem
  3) Open a terminal and run 'sudo software-properties-kde'
  4) Click the 'Additional Drivers' tab
  5) Click "Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from
bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary)".

With the version of the package in -updates you'll observe the
  following Traceback in the terminal:

  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File
"/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/softwareproperties/qt/SoftwarePropertiesQt.py",
line 1061, in on_driver_selection_changed
  modules_package_obj = self.apt_cache[modules_package]
TypeError: Expected a string or a pair of strings

With the version of the package in -proposed you will not.

[ Where problems could occur ]
It's possible we'll hide a real error as we are catching all TypeErrors, but
given we haven't heard of any issues with other stable releases and that this
was fixed in software-properties-gtk in the same way I think it is safe.

Hardware: HP Elitebook 8570p, 16 GB RAM, 120 GB SSD, 3rd Gen Intel
Core i5, UEFI, no secure boot, Broadcom WiFi.

OS: Ubuntu Studio Kinetic, Final ISO

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Boot the Ubuntu Studio ISO on a system with Broadcom WiFi, and install the
system normally. (No encryption, allow Internet access during installation
using some method of connectivity other than WiFi.)
  2. Reboot and log into the newly installed system.
  3. Open a terminal and run "sudo software-properties-kde".
  4. Click "Additional Drivers" in the window that pops up.
  5. Click "Using Broadcom 802.11 Linux STA wireless driver source from
bcmwl-kernel-source (proprietary)".

Expected result: The Apply Changes button should become clickable,
allowing the user to install the driver.

Actual result: The button remains grayed out, and the following error
message is printed in the terminal:

  Traceback (most recent call last):
    File
"/usr/lib/python3/dist-packages/softwareproperties/qt/SoftwarePropertiesQt.py",

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common

2023-11-19 Thread Alex Murray
I am struggling to see the vulnerability here still - the path used in
this case is /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-common.config.55GJ8b appears to have a
randomly generated suffix and so couldn't have been guessed beforehand
nor preseeded with other contents by a local attacker - so the only way
then that I can see that this could be a vulnerability would be if this
file was world-writable - but it is not clear that this is the case
either.

Assuming this file comes from debconf, from what I can see in its
sources, it creates temporary files via the
https://perldoc.perl.org/File::Temp package - which states that files
are created with permissions 0600 by default too.

/tmp is mounted with noexec because running code from /tmp has been a
vulnerability vector for several decades, hence reporting this as a
  vulnerability in perl-base.

This error did not appear to prevent the update of ubuntu-drivers-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1794064] Re: Clicking a hyperlink in a PDF fails to open it if the default browser is a snap

2023-11-19 Thread Sean Lanigan
I have tested evince 42.3-0ubuntu3.1 and apparmor 3.0.4-2ubuntu2.3 from
jammy-proposed, the bug appears to be fixed - I can now click hyperlinks
from PDFs in Evince and Firefox as a Snap package correctly opens a new
tab

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Users cannot open a hyperlink in a PDF opened with evince when the default
browser is a snap.
   * The fix creates a snap_browsers abstraction on AppArmor which can be used
in a transition for when the browser is executed. The snap_browsers abstraction
provides the minimal amount of permissions required to execute a browser
provided through snaps. This is a workaround since AppArmor currently does not
provide mediation/filtering on enhanced environment variables.

  [Test Plan]

   * Make sure the default browser is provided through the snap store.
   * Open a PDF that contains a hyperlink using evince and click on the URL.
   * The browser should open the requested URL.

  [Where problems could occur]

   * If the browser or snap core update to have new requirements for
opening a browser, then the current policy could become obsolete and
will need to be updated again.

Installed a pre-release build of Ubuntu 23.10 to my ThinkPad the other

Installed Steam through apt from the 'mantic' repositories. Installed
Proton 8.0 and Steam Linux Runtime 3.0 (Sniper) alongside two
  compatible titles.

Screen corruption (white and grey streaks) present in-game when GNOME
UI elements appeared on-screen (e.g., volume, brightness, and keyboard
backlight indicators) and omnipresent after closing either game.

Artifacts remain on screen until log-out or reboot. Artifacts were not
  present beforehand.

Artifacts only appeared in Wayland session; not X11/Xorg.

I previously had been running the same games on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
(GNOME, Wayland) and Kubuntu 22.04 LTS (Plasma, X11/Xorg) on this
  computer without issue (kernel 6.2).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043944] [NEW] WISHLIST-Make MOD+LEFT|RIGHT great

2023-11-19 Thread Daniel LaSalle
Public bug reported:

Dear Santa,

This year I have been augmenting my TTY7 keyboard skillz and in that
respect the MOD+arrow key resizing capabilities.

As we know pressing MOD+right arrow shall flawlessly redraw the
currently selected window into half of the right side of the screen.

Based on my user expertise each and every time I invoke it I always
always always end up having to ALT+TAB to another window that I will
then MOD+left arrow to complement it. And so that I can see both windows
simultaneously.

My wish for this year is to automate the ALT+TAB part yet I have to ask
if this a X feature or if it's a MATE feature or ...? In that respect
this as a xorg bug.

But back to the problem: Redmond has got this feature implemented
already on their end. From our end it just currently looks like it's
halfway implemented. If not made a default behavior then for sure there
should be a way to allow the automated resizing of a 2nd screen once any
combination of the MOD+arrow keys will have been typed.

Cheers,

'lil Dan

PS: by "MOD" I mean the "windoze key" AKA MOD4?

Title:
  WISHLIST-Make MOD+LEFT|RIGHT great

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:

And so that I can see both
  windows simultaneously.

My wish for this year is to automate the ALT+TAB part yet I have to
ask if this a X feature or if it's a MATE feature or ...? In that
respect this as a xorg bug.

But back to the problem: Redmond has got this feature implemented
already on their end. From our end it just currently looks like it's
halfway implemented. If not made a default behavior then for sure
there should be a way to allow the automated resizing of a 2nd screen

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043942] [NEW] Primary screen does not resume (post power management)

2023-11-19 Thread Daniel LaSalle
Public bug reported:

On a laptop with a HDMI screen plugged (using same image on all monitors):
It seems that after power management feature kicks in (in my case a blank
screen) and actions are resumed that the original (laptop) screen remains with
a full light grey and is unusable.

Recreation steps:
1. plug in a hdmi monitor into the hdmi plug of your laptop;
2. while the laptop remains charged+plugged in the wall watch something with
celluloid then resume in 2+ hours;
3. on external screen: full working desktop with mouse cursor and colors;
on laptop screen: full light grey screen, no life

nb: by totally unplugging (power and hdmi cable) the laptop it screen remains
unusable but TTY1-6 will work.
By replugging both cables the desktop will again show on the external screen
but laptop screen will remain unusable.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1951491] Re: Can't run snaps: .slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup

2023-11-19 Thread Rohit
I have similar problem with telegram-desktop on Kubuntu 23.10. Before
the dist upgrade this snap used to work fine and could be launched from
the application launcher. After the upgrade, the snap stopped working
and no amount or remove or purge would make it work. I see this in
syslog

Launching telegram-desktop from the command line works just fine though.

I just upgraded from hirsute to impish using do-release-upgrade. On
the upgraded system, I can't run either firefox or chromium (both of
which worked fine under hirsute). Both fail with:

/user.slice/user-NNN.slice/session-1.scope is not a snap cgroup where
  NNN is my uid

With firefox, I was able to fix the problem with:

  snap remove --purge firefox
  apt purge firefox
  apt install firefox

Now firefox works. But I tried the same thing substituting chromium-
browser for firefox, and it didn't help: chromium fails with the same
  error message.

I guess there must be something left over from the hirsute version of
snapd that isn't getting noticed or cleared by the impish version?

Someone suggested this might be related to bug 1850667, but that bug
is marked fixed as of a couple months ago, and I just did this upgrade
today. Also, it doesn't mention the error message I'm seeing.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common

2023-11-19 Thread Andrew J. Caines
@vorlon, Thank you for your considered response. I concur that this is
not a vulnerability in the Ubuntu perl package.

While I do not disagree with any of the points you make, the fact
remains that processes running as root created a file directly in /tmp
not using a safe *mktemp* process and later ran the code in that file.
The risks of doing this are sufficiently well understood, as the
preferable alternatives.

Given that that this quite vanilla Ubuntu system and that this behaviour
was only observed as a result of the reasonable and fairly common
configuration of mounting `/tmp` with *noexec* and did so while running
updates in a fully supported manner, i.e. with *Software Updater*, this
remains a bug with a directly associated security risk. That is to say -
as you expressed it - this comes from an Ubuntu package, though I don't
know which.

Do you recommend that I do anything other than change the Package to
"debconf" and Status to "New"?

@juliank, *apt-utils* is installed.

/tmp is mounted with noexec because running code from /tmp has been a
vulnerability vector for several decades, hence reporting this as a
  vulnerability in perl-base.

This error did not appear to prevent the update of ubuntu-drivers-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2029930] Re: wget crash when printing download rate

2023-11-19 Thread halfgaar
I have just been able to reproduce it by running this on the same server
the website example.org is hosted:

cd /tmp
while true; do rm -rf www.example.org/ && wget --mirror --page-requisites
https://www.example.org 2>&1 | grep -F GB/s; done

The 'grep GB/s' makes a point of showing the improbable speeds. It's not
unusual to see several dozens or hundreds of GB/s there, like this:

2023-11-19 19:33:57 (116 GB/s) - ‘www.example.org/wp-
json/oembed/1.0/embed?url=https:%2F%2Fwww.example.org%2F2023%2F06%2F05%2Fredacted’
saved [2362/2362]

That's 2 kB, downloaded at 116 GB/s. Obviously a timer issue. This
illustrates it's not hard to occasionally hit some super high TB/s
value, which would trigger the crash.

With the PPA, running this grepping on TB/s, it took about 30 minutes,
but eventually:

2023-11-19 19:34:16 (4.00 TB/s) - ‘www.example.org/wp-
json/oembed/1.0/embed?url=https:%2F%2Fwww.example.org%2F2023%2F08%2F19%2Fredacted%2F’
saved [2201/2201]

This is all crawling a Wordpress site. There seems to be a higher chance
of crawling a dynamic site vs static files, possibly because it doesn't
start counting bytes until it has seen the first, and dynamic sites tend
to only operate from memory at that point. That's probably also the
reason it tends to happen on 2 kB-ish files, because it fits in one or
two TCP packets.

Probably a simple PHP scripts that prints a few kBytes is enough.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043524] Re: audio disappeared after upgrade to Ubuntu 23.10

2023-11-19 Thread Luis Alvarado
Same thing is happening here with an Asus Z790. It was working properly
on 23.04. Not on 23.10 the sound works like this:

HiFi 2.0 - Very low sound. I have to crank the sound to max to barely hear it.
HiFi 5.1 - Only the front ones sound (but they sound around 60% when the volume
is at 100%, meaning, the actual volume of them is not full). The rear speakers
dont even sound. You have to put your ear to the actual speaker to hear it.
HiFi 7.1 - The front ones work correctly but any others do not.

The headphones still work correctly via bluetooth, but the whole sound
experience basically is dead. Everything is either very low or speaker
mode or nothing at all.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2043711] Re: Open3.pm tries to run code in /tmp when updating ubuntu-drivers-common

2023-11-19 Thread Steve Langasek
This is not a security bug, or a bug at all in perl.

Software that executes commands under /tmp is not intrinsically
insecure. Various hardening guides recommend mounting /tmp noexec
because it's harder for programmers to get security handling of files
under /tmp *right*; but an attempt to execute a command under /tmp is
not evidence that the programmer has gotten it wrong.

The perl package did not create the file /tmp/ubuntu-drivers-
common.config.55GJ8b and try to execute it. This was done by some other
software that then invoked perl to try to execute it. Perl should not
refuse to try to execute the command because the path starts with
"/tmp", it should do what it has been asked to do.

The specific path in use is suggestive of a debconf config script that
has been unpacked as part of the apt "pre-configuration" stage and is
being run from a temporary directory. However, the normal interface for
this is /usr/sbin/dpkg-preconfigure as invoked via
/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/70debconf; and dpkg-preconfigure explicitly
specifies to extract the config script to /var/cache/debconf/tmp.ci in
order to avoid site policies that restrict execution of binaries under
/tmp. So I do not know why this script has been unpacked to /tmp on
your system; that does not appear to be the normal flow of operation
(and also has not been, for decades).

Since there is not a confirmed securtiy bug here, and since I don't know
where those files on your system came from, I am closing this bug
invalid. If you can provide further information that would show this
path is coming from an Ubuntu package, it would be appropriate to reopen
the bug report and assign it to the corresponding package.

I am also marking this as a public non-security bug.

** Changed in: perl (Ubuntu)

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public

Title:
systemd wait-online now times out after jammy and lunar upgrade

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in systemd source package in Jammy:
  Fix Released
Status in systemd source package in Lunar:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [NOTE]

If you are running a desktop system and you see this issue, you should
  run:

  $ systemctl disable --now systemd-networkd.service

This will disable systemd-networkd and associated units, including
  systemd-networkd-wait-online.service. NetworkManager and systemd-
networkd should not be running at the same time. On desktop,
NetworkManager is the default network stack.

  [Impact]

When all interfaces are "not required for online", e.g. when they are
marked "optional: true" in netplan, systemd-networkd-wait-online will
timeout. Or, in other words, systemd-networkd-wait-online will timeout
even though all interfaces are ignored, hence none of them will ever
be marked as "ready." Depending on what units depend on network-
online.target, this can delay boot by 120 seconds (the default timeout
  for systemd-networkd-wait-online).

  [Test Plan]

  1. Create a new LXD container. These instructions assume jammy is the
release, but the same can be done for lunar.

  $ lxc launch ubuntu-daily:jammy jammy
  $ lxc exec jammy bash

  2. Once in the container, modify the default /etc/netplan/10-lxc.yaml
so that eth0 is configured with "optional: true":

$ vi /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml # Use whatever editor you like
  $ cat /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml
  network:
    version: 2
    ethernets:
  eth0:
    dhcp4: true
    dhcp-identifier: mac
    optional: true

  3. Re-generate and apply the netplan configuration.

  $ netplan generate
  $ netplan apply

  4. Manually run systemd-networkd-wait-online, and observe that all
links are ignored, and the command times out:

  $ SYSTEMD_LOG_LEVEL=debug /lib/systemd/systemd-networkd-wait-online
--timeout=10
  Found link lo(1)
  Found link eth0(19)
  lo: link is ignored
  eth0: link is ignored
Timeout occurred while waiting for network connectivity.

  [Where problems could occur]

This patch partially re-instates a patch remove in bug 1982218.
However, instead of exiting if all links are unmanaged, we exit if all
links are ignored in manager_configured(). If the patch was wrong, we
may re-introduce bug 1982218, so as part of this SRU verification,
that bug should be tested too. Any other regressions would also be
  related to systemd-networkd-wait-online behavior.

  [Original Description]

On Ubuntu 22.04 desktop system using network-manager and upgrading to
systemd 249.11-0ubuntu3.10, wait-online now times out which prevents
logins (GDM, ssh, console) until it does time out. This seems to be
  introduced by the change for
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1982218.

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/systemd/+bug/1982218/comments/21
also mentioned the problem on Lunar.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2036358] Re: systemd wait-online now times out after jammy and lunar upgrade

2023-11-19 Thread Werner Harnisch
This bug should be reopened.

The issue "A start job is running for Wait For Network to be Configured
hanging at boot for 2 minutes in Ubuntu 22.04 servers" for me on Ubuntu
22.04 serverThe timeout error still happens even after installing the
stable release update.
