[Touch-packages] [Bug 2044420] Re: gtkpod segfaults when attempting to display songs
This is likely to see little attention for the following reasons: * Not maintained/No viable upstream. * Remove Request (RM) is active in Debian. [1] This package is likely to be soon removed and I would advise looking for an alternative to it. Thanks for the bug report. Unfortunately we are unable to support this system because your graphics packages are from the unsupported "oibaf" PPA, which is known to cause bugs. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2034986] Re: some text became unreadable during a distribution upgrade
Summary for Mantic SRUs. There are 3 LP bugs combined in mantic-proposed (list sorted by package version so it's helpful). 1) Bug 2034986, used twice, 1A) First for 1:23.10.9, for 'fix v1': * Temporary font for Ubuntu MATE (LP: #2034986) It's released to mantic-updates with 1:23.10.10 (fix for autopkgtests). 1B) Later for 1:23.10.11, for XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP: * do-release-upgrade: pass XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP env var (LP: #2034986) It's reverted in 1:23.10.12: * Temporarily revert "do-release-upgrade: pass XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP env var" and reapplied in 1:23.10.13: * do-release-upgrade: pass XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP env var (LP: #2034986) 2) Bug 2039356, used for 'fix v2' in 1:23:10.12: * Adjustments of unreadable text workaround (LP: #2039356) 3) Bug 2039172, used for an unrelated quirk: * DistUpgradeQuirks: prevent upgrades on BIOS systems with XFS /boot (LP: #2039172) ... So, for verification, we have to consider 1:23.10.11 up to .14. .11 doesn't need verification, as it's reverted in .12 .12 is verified (comment #65 / bug 2039356 comment #3) .13 is not yet verified (comment #65, #66) .14 is verified, but pending questions (bug 2039172 comment #9) Thus, it seems what is pending for releasing mantic-proposed is verification for .13 (that I'm happy to do synthetically), plus a question for .14 (I'd be be happy to help, if needed). -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2034986 Title: some text became unreadable during a distribution upgrade Status in Cinnamon: New Status in Ubuntu MATE: New Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Jammy: Fix Committed Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Lunar: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-meta source package in Mantic: Fix Released Status in ubuntu-release-upgrader source package in Mantic: Fix Committed Bug description: [ Impact ] * On Ubuntu Mate with the Lunar series, when running ubuntu-release-upgrader, the displayed font of running applications (including the upgrader) becomes very corrupted. * This is not just a display problem, it is also a functional one. If we are careless, we could regress upgrades for a wider group of users than just Ubuntu Mate. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1994165] Re: CMS_final: do not ignore CMS_dataFinal result
Indeed, there is an "extra" change which I saw fit to include after reviewing the change with care. Replicating the issue directly involves using the openssl C APIs because higher-level interfaces like the command-line ones prevent calling the affected code in a way that will trigger the issue. This significantly increases the effort required to write the testcase. I don't think upstream wrote one either although that is their habit nowadays but it's been some time and I will have to look at it again. Removing (b) wouldn't cause a security issue and it seems (a) is enough to fix the functional issue that has been reported. On the other hand this is a diff from current upstream versions, it will require new tests and the (a+b) changes have seen a lot of use worlwide by now. When including (b), I knew that it was probably not strictly required and I'm fine with removing it even though I would prefer to keep it for the above reasons. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1994165 Title: CMS_final: do not ignore CMS_dataFinal result Status in openssl package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in openssl source package in Jammy: In Progress Status in openssl source package in Kinetic: Won't Fix Status in openssl source package in Lunar: Fix Released Bug description: === SRU information === [Meta] This bug is part of a series of three bugs for a single SRU. Additionally, the bug reporter here has tested the PPA that contains the patche and validated it. Finally, I read through the patch attentively. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2023545] Re: [UBUNTU 22.04] openssl with ibmca engine configured dumps core when creating a new certificate
As you mention, it's difficult to test with this reproducer specifically since it's specialized hardware and I've largely had to rely on testing from the proxied persons who also have interests and duties in this working well. The issue also appears without the specific hardware when using providers for some functions but openssl 3.0 providers are recent and not very widely used so there aren't many one that fit either and the verification/setup is correspondingly high. On the bright side, the potential for damage is low due to the small userbase. One last thing: I don't know if this could work less well than right now since they get crashes. The "engines-1.1" is not necessarily a concern: libengine-gost- openssl/libengine-gost-openssl1.1 was/were putting files in a similar place without issue IIRC. I don't have a good example to show because the package currently for jammy puts it in / directly... . In any case, the path should be configured and the actual location isn't really an issue. You can see the configuration on https://sysos.ru/archives/589 (russian, search for "openssl_def"; I have seen non-russian links too but I can't find them again). The package for the SRU is already in -proposed so it should be possible to test already. It's (very) late here though so I'll come back to this and the tests tomorrow. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2023545] Re: [UBUNTU 22.04] openssl with ibmca engine configured dumps core when creating a new certificate
Adrien, we do have openssl-ibmca in the archive, for the s390x arch: $ rmadison openssl-ibmca openssl-ibmca | 1.3.0-0ubuntu2 | xenial/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 1.3.0-0ubuntu2.16.04.2 | xenial-updates/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 1.4.1-0ubuntu1 | bionic/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 1.4.1-0ubuntu1.2 | bionic-security/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 1.4.1-0ubuntu1.2 | bionic-updates/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.1.0-0ubuntu1 | focal/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.1.0-0ubuntu1.20.04.2 | focal-security/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.1.0-0ubuntu1.20.04.2 | focal-updates/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.2.3-0ubuntu1 | jammy/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.2.3-0ubuntu1.1 | jammy-security/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.2.3-0ubuntu1.1 | jammy-updates/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.4.0-0ubuntu1 | lunar/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.4.0-0ubuntu2 | mantic/universe | source, s390x openssl-ibmca | 2.4.0-0ubuntu2 | noble/universe | source, s390x It should be possible to come up with a test case that mimics what was reported. But if not, we can rely on their testing of the proposed packages, since this particular test case requires specialized hardware. One caveat, though. I fear we might find a bug in our openssl-ibmca packaging. The package in mantic, for example, installs the engine in an openssl 1.1 directory, and there is no openssl 1.1 in mantic: ubuntu@s1lp5:~$ dpkg -L openssl-ibmca|grep engine /usr/bin/ibmca-engine-opensslconfig /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/engines-1.1 /usr/lib/s390x-linux-gnu/engines-1.1/ibmca.so I suppose IBM built the engine from source for their case? But if they used openssl-ibmca from jammy, then it should be easier for us to test. As to possible regressions in other engines, we do have some in the archive, although for openssl-3 they are deprecated, and providers are favored. But I have a script that tests openvpn with an openssl engine that we could use here, I used it in another SRU[1]: """ [Jammy specific test plan] Given that in jammy we had to re-enable openssl3 engine support, here is a test for that to make sure it keeps working. In a jammy *VM*: - Download test script: wget https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/+bug/2004676/+attachment/5714185/+files/vpn-setup-with-pkcs11 - Install test dependencies sudo apt install openvpn easy-rsa openssl opensc-pkcs11 gnutls-bin softhsm2 dpkg-dev libengine-pkcs11-openssl expect - Run test: sudo ./vpn-setup-with-pkcs11 It runs with set -e, so expected result is "## All good, stopping client and server services" and "## Done." This result is expected both with the current jammy package, and the proposed update. """ In that script, the bit that exercises the engine is this, right after having configured openssl.cnf to use the engine: OPENSSL_CONF="${ssl_cnf}" openssl \ req -engine pkcs11 -new -key "${URI};object=${LABEL};pin-value=${PIN}" \ -keyform engine -out ${req_pem} -text -subj "/${SUBJECT_CLIENT}" So, to summarize, for the test plan: - ask for a test run like the one in comment #2, but with the proposed packages, once they are published - run the script above to exercise a non-ibmca engine. Feel free to adapt/simplify the script for this use case here, since the original intent was to test openvpn What do you think? 1. https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openvpn/+bug/2004676 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2023545 Title: [UBUNTU 22.04] openssl with ibmca engine configured dumps core when creating a new certificate Status in Ubuntu on IBM z Systems: In Progress Status in openssl package in Ubuntu: In Progress Status in openssl source package in Jammy: In Progress Status in openssl source package in Lunar: Fix Released Bug description: === SRU information === [Meta] This bug is part of a series of three bugs for a single SRU. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1994165] Re: CMS_final: do not ignore CMS_dataFinal result
There are two changes here: a) The original bug: CMS_final() was not taking into account the result of CMS_dataFinal() when returning its return code. It might be that CMS_dataFinal() failed, in which case an error would even be raised, but the return code of CMS_final() would be that of SMIME_crlf_copy(). b) While fixing (a), it was noticed that tons of other places in the code were not checking the result code of SMIME_crlf_copy(). It looks like this function returns a failure (0) when BIO_new() fails, so, a memory allocation. I checked an openssl build log[1], and there are tests for CMS, and none of them failed. The failure case is explained in [2]: """ It means some broken message that will later fail parsing/decryption/signature verification can be produced. """ So, my ponderings: - for (a), was there perhaps a test case added to the openssl case to cover for that mistake? If not, could we come up with one in the test suite? - the fix for (b) was a drive-by fix, and seems correct, but it is touching more code. What do you think about isolating the fix in this SRU to just the CMS_final() function? Pros and cons? So we fix the CMS_final() function, in the sense that we will keep checking both the return code of SMIME_crlf_copy() and CMS_dataFinal(). 1. https://launchpadlibrarian.net/692262295/buildlog_ubuntu-jammy-amd64.openssl_3.0.2-0ubuntu1.12_BUILDING.txt.gz 2. https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/18876#issuecomment-1323830916 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1994165 Title: CMS_final: do not ignore CMS_dataFinal result Status in openssl package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in openssl source package in Jammy: In Progress Status in openssl source package in Kinetic: Won't Fix Status in openssl source package in Lunar: Fix Released Bug description: === SRU information === [Meta] This bug is part of a series of three bugs for a single SRU. The "central" bug with the global information and debdiff is http://pad.lv/2033422 [Impact] S/MIME signature can fail silently The commit by upstream propagates the return code of some functions rather than ignore it. [Test plan] This issue is not very simple to reproduce because "openssl cms" cannot be used to do so. This has to be done with the openssl API instead. At least the bug reportere here and the one on openssl's bug tracker have confirmed the patch solves the issue. Additionally, the bug reporter here has tested the PPA that contains the patche and validated it. Finally, I read through the patch attentively. [Where problems could occur] At this point it is unlikely an error would appear. The openssl bug tracker mentions nothing related to this patch which landed more than a year ago. The patch is simple and doesn't change the code logic. [Patches] The patches come directly from upstream and apply cleanly. https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/18876 * https://git.launchpad.net/~adrien-n/ubuntu/+source/openssl/tree/debian/patches/jammy-sru-0001-REGRESSION-CMS_final-do-not-ignore-CMS_dataFinal-res.patch?h=jammy-sru=04ef023920ab08fba214817523fba897527dfff0 * https://git.launchpad.net/~adrien-n/ubuntu/+source/openssl/tree/debian/patches/jammy-sru-0002-Handle-SMIME_crlf_copy-return-code.patch?h=jammy-sru=04ef023920ab08fba214817523fba897527dfff0 === Original description === https://github.com/openssl/openssl/pull/18876 The CMS_dataFinal result is important as signature may fail, however, it is ignored while returning success from CMS_final. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2044391] Re: Blowfish decryption failure because of incorrect key length
At work, we still use Blowfish and we are in the process of moving some systems from CentOS 7 to Ubuntu Jammy. Until the migration is complete, we may have data encrypted on CentOS 7 that we want to decrypt on Jammy and vice versa. We could work around the bug by switching all the affected systems at once, but that would make the migration more complicated. Fixing the bug makes it simpler, so my plan is to create a package for work with the upstream patch added to 3.0.2-0ubuntu1.12 -- ideally only as a stop-gap until there's an update from Canonical. :) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to openssl in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2044391 Title: Blowfish decryption failure because of incorrect key length Status in openssl package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: The version of OpenSSL in Jammy (3.0.2) is affected by this issue: https://github.com/openssl/openssl/issues/18359. The upshot is that ciphertext created in Jammy cannot be decrypted by unaffected versions of OpenSSL and vice versa. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2043713] Re: armhf autopkgtests fail due to TestApportValgrind.test_valgrind_min_installed

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1616262] Re: Unable to update initramfs with small boot partition
/boot needs to be sized to allow 3 kernels to be installed at the same time, + one additional initramfs. The installer does not allow installing on partitions that small. The workaround is incomplete and dangerous because you'd have to remove old initrd before putting in the new one and could end up without any initrd. ** Changed in: initramfs-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Triaged => Won't Fix -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to initramfs-tools in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1616262 Title: Unable to update initramfs with small boot partition Status in initramfs-tools package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: I have a small 100MB boot paritition and an initramfs that is 37MB. Once you add in all the usual clutter in /boot there is 25MB or so of free space left. I have a single kernel installed, there are no older versions floating about. When I run the update-initramfs script, it fails with : gzip: stdout: No space left on device E: mkinitramfs failure cpio 141 gzip 1 update-initramfs: failed for /boot/initrd.img-4.4.0-21-generic with 1. Looking at the default update-initramfs script, it appears to try and create the new initramfs image on the boot partition, then rename it to the current one in use. It fails at the cpio step as there is insufficient room for both initramfs images in the partition. I have tweaked the script to allow it to create the initramfs image in /tmp and then move it to the desired location (as opposed to creating it / renaming it in the same location), however while it works for me (tm) I'm unsure if this breaks any other behaviour. Please also care for the rest of us that do not use cloud environments! For example, I routinely review, clone, backup or even directly edit the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections files in my desktops and servers, in all distributions. Having an Ubuntu-specific way to do things will make things harder for me. I will have to learn a new Ubuntu-specific syntax, develop scripts and methods to convert my connections between distributions, I will need to discover and report bugs in the netplan <=> nm mapping etc... I.e. Ubuntu is great for the cloud, and it's awesome that you want to provide a unified yaml-based experience for cloud-init etc. But Ubuntu is also great outside the cloud; please allow us to continue having a unified experience between distributions (i.e. directly using nm or systemd-networkd) without enforcing an Ubuntu-specific way of doing things (netplan) to us. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2039873] Re: liblxc-dev was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 in Ubuntu 22.04 and later releases

But for release build we should have LXC_DEVEL=0. LXC_DEVEL is a variable that appears in the /usr/include/lxc/version.h and then can be (and actually it is) used by other projects to detect if liblxc-dev is a development build or stable. Having LXC_DEVEL=1 makes problems for the users who want to build projects those are depend on liblxc from source (for example, LXD, go-lxc: https://github.com/canonical/lxd/pull/12420). Q: Why it was not a problem for so long? A: Because LXC API was stable for a long time, but recently we have extended liblxc API (https://github.com/lxc/lxc/pull/4260) and dependant package go-lxc was updated too (https://github.com/lxc/go-lxc/pull/166). This change was developed properly to be backward compatible with the old versions of liblxc. But, there is a problem. If LXC_DEVEL=1 then the macro check VERSION_AT_LEAST (https://github.com/lxc/go-lxc/blob/ccae595aa49e779f7ecc9250329967aa546acd31/lxc-binding.h#L7) is disabled. That's why we should *not* have LXC_DEVEL=1 for *any* release build of LXC. [ Test Plan ] Install liblxc-dev package and check /usr/include/lxc/version.h file LXC_DEVEL should be 0 [ Where problems could occur ] Theoretically, build of a software which depends on liblxc-dev may start to fail if it assumes that LXC_DEVEL is 1. [Touch-packages] [Bug 426556] Re: policykit cause high dbus-daemon cpu usage
To troubleshoot high CPU usage caused by the dbus-daemon process, you can use the "$ dbus-monitor --session" command to monitor the messages being sent through dbus. In my case, I discovered that my break taker app was sending lots of messages to dbus-daemon. After stopping it, the dbus-daemon CPU usage returned to normal. The documentation is incorrect for Ubuntu. Canonical specifically builds zdev in a way that every change to persistent device configuration causes an update to the initial RAM-disk. Correct? > If you confirm, you may also close this bug. > > Not nice - then we have to find an alternate solution. chzdev -p on Ubuntu will by default rebuild the initrd. This is intended behavior by Canonical and controlled by the ZDEV_ALWAYS_UPDATE_INITRD build-time switch. You can suppress it by adding option --no-root-update to the command line. Specifying zdev:early=0 to chzdev has exactly the effect that it is supposed to have: it tells zdev not to enable that device during initrd processing, resulting in the corresponding
