Title:
  Allow configuring Wi-Fi MAC Randomization feature from GUI

Status in gnome-control-center:

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Recent versions of NetworkManager have a feature enabled by default to
  use a random MAC address when scanning for available Wi-Fi networks
  for privacy. My understanding is that the spoofed MAC address is not
  used when actually connecting to a network.

  This feature was disabled in Ubuntu 17.10 because it broke scanning
  with some Wi-Fi drivers. My understanding is that there is a bug in
  some drivers when attempting to change the MAC address. See LP:
  #1681513.

  The bug might not be as big of an issue with the latest version of
NetworkManager because
  1) There are helpful commits like this (it was not backported to 17.04):
  https://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=46d53e1
  2) It is also possible now to selectively disable Wi-Fi MAC Randomization for
specific drivers.
  https://cgit.freedesktop.org/NetworkManager/NetworkManager/commit/?id=b869d9

  However, I'm really hesitant to re-enable this feature as long as
  A) we don't know for sure which drivers are affected,
  B) and more importantly, there is no GUI way to turn the feature on or off.
Asking users to edit config files isn't very nice.

  The MAC Address Randomization feature is really nice (Windows 10 has a
  similar feature) but I think we need a GUI on/off switch in Settings >
  Wi-Fi or Settings > Privacy.

The file didn't exist and therefore was empty. I added the line and
saved the file. There was no change after rebooting. I still get sound,
but the same as before, only high-pitched with no base. Does there need
to be something additional in the file or some other configuration? Is
there some configuration to enable the speakers that give the base?

Can you attach /usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng16.so.16 to this

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2046570] Re: package initramfs-tools 0.140ubuntu13.4 failed to install/upgrade: installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2023-12-18 Thread Benjamin Drung
There we found it. ldd prints a warning and the initramfs-tools shell
code stumbles upon it:

/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so:
/usr/local/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libpng16.so.16: no version information
available (required by /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libply-splash-
graphics.so.5)

Can you check if that output is printed on stdout or stderr? "env
--unset=LD_PRELOAD ldd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so >
/dev/null"

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2036467] Re: Resizing cloud-images occasionally fails due to superblock checksum mismatch in resize2fs

2023-12-18 Thread Krister Johansen
@mruffel just wanted to check back to see if the instructions in the
report worked to reproduce the problem for you. If so, do you have any
estimate when packages with the patch will be made available? Thanks!

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  This is a long running bug plaguing cloud-images, where on a rare
  occasion resize2fs would fail and the image would not resize to fit
  the entire disk.

  Online resizes would fail due to a superblock checksum mismatch, where
  the superblock in memory differs from what is currently on disk due to
  changes made to the image.

  $ resize2fs /dev/nvme1n1p1
  resize2fs 1.47.0 (5-Feb-2023)
  resize2fs: Superblock checksum does not match superblock while trying to open
/dev/nvme1n1p1
  Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock.

  Changing the read of the superblock to Direct I/O solves the issue.

  [Testcase]

  Start an c5.large instance on AWS, and attach a 60gb gp3 volume for
  use as a scratch disk.

  Run the following script, courtesy of Krister Johansen and his team:

     #!/usr/bin/bash
     set -euxo pipefail

     while true
     do
     parted /dev/nvme1n1 mklabel gpt mkpart primary 2048s 2099200s
     sleep .5
     mkfs.ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1
     mount -t ext4 /dev/nvme1n1p1 /mnt
     stress-ng --temp-path /mnt -D 4 &
     STRESS_PID=$!
     sleep 1
     growpart /dev/nvme1n1 1
     resize2fs /dev/nvme1n1p1
     kill $STRESS_PID
     wait $STRESS_PID
     umount /mnt
     wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1p1
     wipefs -a /dev/nvme1n1
     done

  Test packages are available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/lp2036467-test

  If you install the test packages, the race no longer occurs.

  [Where problems could occur]

  We are changing how resize2fs reads the superblock from underlying
  disks.

  If a regression were to occur, resize2fs could fail to resize offline
  or online volumes. As all cloud-images are online resized during their
  initial boot, this could have a large impact to public and private
  clouds should a regression occur.

  Author: Theodore Ts'o

  The commit has not been tagged to any release. All supported Ubuntu
  releases require this fix, and need to be published in standard non-

ldd comes from libc-bin. Can you tell me the libc-bin version and

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2046570] Re: package initramfs-tools 0.140ubuntu13.4 failed to install/upgrade: installed initramfs-tools package post-installation script subprocess returned error exit status 1

2023-12-18 Thread Benjamin Drung
I tried to reproduce it in a chroot environment:

```
schroot-wrapper -p
linux-image-6.2.0-34-generic,initramfs-tools,plymouth-theme-spinner,plymouth-theme-ubuntu-text,vim
 -u root -c jammy
echo FRAMEBUFFER=y >> /etc/initramfs-tools/initramfs.conf
vim /usr/share/initramfs-tools/hooks/plymouth
update-initramfs -u > log 2>&1
```

Then diffed the output:

```
sed -i 's/mkinitramfs_EXUmcb/mkinitramfs_SWWOCa/g' log
diff -u log comment-4.txt > log.diff
```

The output starts to differ from here. Your log:

```
+ env --unset=LD_PRELOAD ldd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so
+ sed -e
  /\//!d;
  /linux-gate/d;
  /=>/ {s/.*=>[[:blank:]]*\([^[:blank:]]*\).*/\1/};
  s/[[:blank:]]*\([^[:blank:]]*\) (.*)/\1/
+ echo /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so:
```

My log:

```
+ env --unset=LD_PRELOAD ldd /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so
+ sed -e
/\//!d;
/linux-gate/d;
s/[[:blank:]]*\([^[:blank:]]*\) (.*)/\1/
+ echo /lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libm.so.6
```

Can you paste the output of `env --unset=LD_PRELOAD ldd
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/plymouth//two-step.so` please?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2029120] Re: /usr/bin/unattended-upgrade leaking and saturating RAM in 30 seconds

2023-12-18 Thread Ronald Baker
Hello, I notice the same problem as reported by Aurélien. It happens
daily at the time the unattended upgrades are scheduled. Sometimes it
lasts only a minute, sometimes longer. But when it occurs at a moment
that an unresponsive system is not acceptable, this causes problems. It
consumes 90% memory (32 Gb RAM - swapfile is twice that size)! Until now
I didn't notice an out of memory for that process, but it seems that it
keeps growing until it fills the whole memory available.

Ubuntu 22.04.3

Status in unattended-upgrades package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Hello,
  We are facing a huge memory leak with unattended-upgrade binary. It appears
that in around 20s, 2.9Go (80%) of RAM is consumed by the process making the
system unresponsive (even a basic 'ps' command remains stuck).
  The swap was voluntarily disabled, but anyway I do not expect such a process
to consume up to 3Go of RAM in nominal operation.

  Note: the logs were captured on a system configured in French. I
  manually translated some words below, which could explain it is not
  exactly what you would have on an english based system.

  Ubuntu release:
  Description:Ubuntu 22.04 LTS
  Release:22.04

  Package version:
  unattended-upgrades:
    Installed : 2.8ubuntu1
    Candidate : 2.8ubuntu1
   Version table :

  500 http://fr.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main i386 Packages
  100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

  In attachment you will find 2 files:
  - periodic monitoring of available memory (with free -m)
  - periodic monitoring of highest memory consumer processes (with ps + sort on
memory column)
  - screenshot of syslog (from a distinct run) showing that unattended-upgr
went out of memory and was killed by OOM. You can also see that the run occured
as part of the apt-daily service.

Amk's workaround is ideal. I modified slightly to include support for
sddm and gdm , which makes it pretty universal.

I wish I was more competent at perl. I'd love to be able to get it to
automatically set each login manager session to "Idle" on a 15 minute
cycle, and remove the systemctl suspend action; instead allowing logind
to handle the situation when all session are "Idle".

I already use notification in KDE to set IdleHint when the screen locks
(using dbus-send --system --print-reply --dest=org.freedesktop.login1
/org/freedesktop/login1/session/$XDG_SESSION_ID
"org.freedesktop.login1.Session.SetIdleHint" boolean:true )

It feels like with a couple of simple work arounds IdleHint can be used
effectively, which is a nice-to-have on single-seat workstations, and
critical for suspending on multi-seat workstations.

Title:
  systemd idleaction=suspend not working in multiseat while a screen is
  showing login prompt

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS, multiseat setup.
  systemd:  Installed: 229-4ubuntu21
  lightdm:  Installed: 1.18.3-0ubuntu1.1

  logind.conf:IdleAction=suspend
  logind.conf:IdleActionSec=300

  Using multiseat, it is not possible to have gnome settings controlling
  idle suspend, as it would ignore the other seat. IdleAction=suspend in
  /etc/systemd/logind.conf works well, provided both seats are logged in
  or locked.

  After boot, or after logout the seat remains showing login screen and
  the system never suspends.

  loginctl show-session provides IdleHint=yes that allows to determine
  whether the user is active. For some reason Active property is yes all
  the time.

  But for the login screen the show-session does not provide the hint
  about seat idling:

  $ loginctl show-session c9
  Id=c9
  User=108
  Name=lightdm
  Timestamp=Sun 2017-11-05 22:35:37 CET
  TimestampMonotonic=13418600852
  VTNr=7
  Seat=seat0
  Display=:1
  Remote=no
  Service=lightdm-greeter
  Scope=session-c9.scope
  Leader=12431
  Audit=0
  Type=x11
  Class=greeter
  Active=yes
  State=active
  IdleHint=no
  IdleSinceHint=0
  IdleSinceHintMonotonic=0

  Working on a script to check for IdleHint=Yes and Service=lightdm-
  greeter and suspend based on this.

  I am marking this as a bug in lightdm because I think it is not
  correctly reporting the idle status to the system.

That looks correct. Is "sudo update-initramfs -u" still failing? If not,
can you check /var/log/apt/history.log and /var/log/apt/term.log to
figure out what ran since then?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2046818] [NEW] APT: certificate validation failed (LE certificate)

2023-12-18 Thread Faustin
Public bug reported:

Hi!
I am not sure if this is the correct place or package to report the issue to
(maybe apt-transport-https or libgnutls?).

Anyway, the https://mariadb.gb.ssimn.org/ mirror can not be used by APT
and gives the following error:

W: Failed to fetch
https://mariadb.gb.ssimn.org/repo/11.3/ubuntu/dists/jammy/InRelease
Certificate verification failed: The certificate is NOT trusted. The
certificate issuer is unknown. Could not handshake: Error in the certificate
verification. [IP: 81.0.219.146 443]
W: Some index files failed to download. They have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

But the Let's Encrypt certificate looks OK and wget or curl can
establish TLS connection without pb, see below and
https://mariadb.gb.ssimn.org/.

This has been tested on Ubuntu 18.04 and Ubuntu 22.04 with the following
commands (see https://mariadb.org/download/?t=repo-
config=22.04+%22jammy%22=11.3+%5BRC%5D_m=starburst):

$ podman run -it ubuntu:22.04 bash
root@288e75580b84:/# apt update
root@288e75580b84:/# apt-get install apt-transport-https curl
root@288e75580b84:/# mkdir -p /etc/apt/keyrings
root@288e75580b84:/# curl -o /etc/apt/keyrings/mariadb-keyring.pgp
'https://mariadb.org/mariadb_release_signing_key.pgp'

Add the following in the `/etc/apt/sources.list.d/mariadb.sources`:

# MariaDB 11.3 [RC] repository list - created 2023-12-18 15:09 UTC
# https://mariadb.org/download/
X-Repolib-Name: MariaDB
Types: deb
URIs: https://mariadb.gb.ssimn.org/repo/11.3/ubuntu
Suites: jammy
Components: main main/debug
Signed-By: /etc/apt/keyrings/mariadb-keyring.pgp

Apt update fails but curl works:

root@288e75580b84:/# curl -o /tmp/PublicKey
https://mariadb.gb.ssimn.org/PublicKey
  % Total% Received % Xferd Average Speed TimeTime Time Current

100 14928  100 149280 0  97876  0 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 98210

I am not able to reproduce this either on Debian (10/11/12) or Ubuntu
23.04.

Regards,
Faustin

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2045668] Re: Please merge dbus 1.14.10-3 (main) from Debian unstable

2023-12-18 Thread Steve Langasek
The usrmerge transition was completed already in Ubuntu several cycles
ago. We should not promote usr-is-merged to main, we should drop the
dependencies on it instead.

usrmerge can also be dropped from main now. It is only in main because
it is seeded with the rationale:

 * (usrmerge) # xnox Default since Disco. Will be mandatory in
22.10. Only recommend, such that it is installed on upgrades, can be
removed afterwards.

The comment is misleading, the commit talking about "mandatory in 22.10"
was made in November 2020. We've had a full LTS cycle since then where
users, whether on new installs or upgrades, have been in a usrmerge
configuration and there is no support for non-usrmerged filesystems in
Ubuntu 21.04 or later.

So we should drop this recommends, drop usrmerge source from main, and
drop dbus's dependency on usr-is-merged.

Title:
  Please merge dbus 1.14.10-3 (main) from Debian unstable

Status in dbus package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
  1.14.10-3
  Published in sid-release on 2023-10-30

  dbus (1.14.10-3) unstable; urgency=medium

* d/control: dbus Depends on usr-is-merged (>= 38~).
  Non-merged /usr has been unsupported since Debian 12, as per Technical
  Committee resolutions #978636 and #994388 (please see the Debian 12
  release notes for details).
  The version of usr-is-merged shipped in Debian 12 had an undocumented
  opt-out mechanism intended for use on buildds and QA systems targeting
  Debian 12 (piuparts, reproducible-builds, autopkgtest and similar),
  to ensure that the upgrade path from Debian 11 to 12 will continue
  to work and continue to undergo automated tests. That opt-out is
  no longer applicable or available in trixie/sid, and was removed in
  usrmerge version 38.
  Since version 1.14.10-2, dbus ships its systemd units in
  /usr/lib/systemd/system, as part of the distro-wide transition
  away from making use of "aliased" paths. This is entirely valid on
  merged-/usr systems, but will no longer work in the unsupported
  filesystem layout with non-merged /usr, because for historical
  reasons, current versions of systemd on non-merged-/usr systems will
  only read units from /lib/systemd/system.
  In the case of dbus, the symptom when this assumption is broken is
  particularly bad (various key system services will not start, with
  long delays during boot, login and shutdown), so let's hold back
  this upgrade on unsupported non-merged-/usr systems until they have
  completed the switch to merged-/usr and can install
  usr-is-merged (>= 38~).
  (Closes: #1054650)

   -- Simon McVittie   Mon, 30 Oct 2023 11:51:35 +

  1.14.10-2
  Superseded in sid-release on 2023-10-30

  dbus (1.14.10-2) unstable; urgency=low

* Backport packaging changes from experimental:
  - Install systemd system units into /usr/lib/systemd/system.
This was allowed by TC resolution #1053901. The shared library is
still in /lib, for now.
Build-depend on debhelper 13.11.6~ to ensure that the units are still
picked up by dh_installsystemd.
  - Build-depend on pkgconf rather than pkg-config
  - dbus-x11: Don't copy XDG_SEAT_PATH, XDG_SESSION_PATH to activation
environment. These variables are specific to a single login session.
* d/copyright: Drop unused entry for pkg.m4.
  This is no longer included in the upstream source release since 1.14.6.
* d/dbus-tests.lintian-overrides: Drop unused overrides.
  Lintian no longer flags our RUNPATH as problematic.
