[Touch-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP
We have found that allowing the user namespace creation, and then denying capabilities is in general handled much better by KDE. The the case of the plasmashell and the browswer widget denying the creation of the user namespace would cause a crash with a SIGTRAP backtrace, where allowing the creation of the userns and then denying capabilities within the user namespace would result in the browser widget falling back to a sandbox that didn't use user namespaces, not ideal but better than a crash. To make sure the widget was using the full sandbox we gave it a profile (see QtWebEngineProcess in /etc/apparmor.d/plasmashell). The apparmor package is adding a base set of profiles, including one for the plasmashell and the unprivileged_userns profile. We are willing to carry profiles in the apparmor package but are also happy for other packages to carry them. Generally speaking, having the profile carried in the package means its easier for the package maintainer to update the profile, if that is something the package maintainer is willing to do. We are more than willing to take in profiles and patches to profiles, or allow a maintainer to claim some profiles and move them out of the apparmor package. What ever is best for the maintainer. AppArmor does have a second set of profiles that are not installed by default in the apparmor-profiles package. These profiles once installed are not enabled by default but must be selectively enabled by the user. If you are looking for a broader set of profiles as a base to start from there is also the apparmor.d project https://github.com/roddhjav/apparmor.d. They aren't tuned for ubuntu but they can be a good starting point if a profile is needed. Note: the current apparmor package doesn't allow you to specify the userns transition in policy. A new version of the apparmor package is coming that will allow it. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to apparmor in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2046844 Title: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP Status in akregator package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in angelfish package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in apparmor package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in bubblewrap package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in cantor package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in devhelp package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in digikam package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in epiphany-browser package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in evolution package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in falkon package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in freecad package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in ghostwriter package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in gnome-packagekit package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in goldendict-webengine package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in kalgebra package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in kchmviewer package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in kdeplasma-addons package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in kiwix package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in konqueror package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in kontact package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in notepadqq package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in opam package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in pageedit package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in plasma-desktop package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in privacybrowser package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in qmapshack package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in qutebrowser package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in rssguard package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in steam package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in supercollider package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in tellico package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Hi, I run Ubuntu development branch 24.04 and I have a problem with Epiphany browser 45.1-1 (Gnome Web): program doesn't launch, and I get this error $ epiphany bwrap: Creating new namespace failed: Permission denied ** (epiphany:12085): ERROR **: 14:44:35.023: Failed to fully launch dbus-proxy: Le processus fils s’est terminé avec le code 1 Trappe pour point d'arrêt et de trace (core dumped) $ epiphany bwrap: Creating new namespace failed: Permission denied ** (epiphany:30878): ERROR **: 22:22:26.926: Failed to fully launch dbus-proxy: Le processus fils s’est terminé avec le code 1 Trappe pour point d'arrêt et de trace (core dumped) Thanks for your help! [Touch-packages] [Bug 2036467] Re: Resizing cloud-images occasionally fails due to superblock checksum mismatch in resize2fs
Hi Matthew, Thanks for the update. I'm glad this finally reproduced in your environment. I don't have a great explanation for why it took so much longer there. I did observe that it seemed more likely to occur in us-west-2 during the 9a-5p window in the local timezone. The timing may be subtly affected by overall EBS utilization. Just a guess, though. Remaining changes: - debian/rules: modify dh_installsystemd invocations for socket-activated sshd. - debian/openssh-server.postinst: handle migration of sshd_config options to systemd socket options on upgrade. - debian/README.Debian: document systemd socket activation. - debian/patches/socket-activation-documentation.patch: Document in sshd_config(5) that ListenAddress and Port no longer work. - debian/openssh-server.templates: include debconf prompt explaining when migration cannot happen due to multiple ListenAddress values. - debian/.gitignore: drop file. - debian/openssh-server.postrm: remove systemd drop-ins for socket-activated sshd on purge. - debian/openssh-server.ucf-md5sum: update for Ubuntu delta - debian/openssh-server.tmpfile,debian/systemd/ssh.service: Move /run/sshd creation out of the systemd unit to a tmpfile config so that sshd can be run manually if necessary without having to create this directory by hand. - debian/patches/systemd-socket-activation.patch: Fix sshd re-execution behavior when socket activation is used. - debian/tests/systemd-socket-activation: Add autopkgtest for systemd socket activation functionality. - d/p/test-set-UsePAM-no-on-some-tests.patch: set UsePAM=no for some tests. * Dropped changes, fixed upstream: - d/p/fix-ftbfs-with-zlib13.patch: fix ftbfs when using zlib 1.3 (LP #2049552) openssh (1:9.6p1-3) unstable; urgency=medium * Allow passing extra ssh-agent arguments via "/usr/lib/openssh/agent-launch start", making it possible to override things like identity lifetime using a systemd drop-in unit (closes: #1059639). * Don't try to start rescue-ssh.target in postinst (LP: #2047082). openssh (1:9.6p1-2) unstable; urgency=medium * Improve detection of broken -fzero-call-used-regs=used (see https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3645; fixes build on ppc64/ppc64el). openssh (1:9.6p1-1) unstable; urgency=medium * Use single quotes in suggested ssh-keygen commands (closes: #1057835). * Debconf translations: - Catalan (thanks, Pablo Huguet; closes: #1049995). * New upstream release (https://www.openssh.com/releasenotes.html#9.6p1): - [CVE-2023-48795] ssh(1), sshd(8): implement protocol extensions to thwart the so-called "Terrapin attack" discovered by Fabian Bäumer, Marcus Brinkmann and Jörg Schwenk. This attack allows a MITM to effect a limited break of the integrity of the early encrypted SSH transport protocol by sending extra messages prior to the commencement of encryption, and deleting an equal number of consecutive messages immediately after encryption starts. A peer SSH client/server would not be able to detect that messages were deleted. - [CVE-2023-51384] ssh-agent(1): when adding PKCS#11-hosted private keys while specifying destination constraints, if the PKCS#11 token returned multiple keys then only the first key had the constraints applied. Use of regular private keys, FIDO tokens and unconstrained keys are unaffected. - [CVE-2023-51385] ssh(1): if an invalid user or hostname that contained shell metacharacters was passed to ssh(1), and a ProxyCommand, LocalCommand directive or "match exec" predicate referenced the user or hostname via %u, %h or similar expansion token, then an attacker who could supply arbitrary user/hostnames to ssh(1) could potentially perform command injection depending on what quoting was present in the user-supplied ssh_config(5) directive. OpenSSH 9.6 now bans most shell metacharacters from user and hostnames supplied via the command-line. - ssh(1), sshd(8): the RFC4254 connection/channels protocol provides a TCP-like window mechanism that limits the amount of data that can be sent without acceptance from the peer. In cases where this limit was exceeded by a non-conforming peer SSH implementation, ssh(1)/sshd(8) previously discarded the extra data. From OpenSSH 9.6, ssh(1)/sshd(8) will now terminate the connection if a peer exceeds the window limit by more than a small grace factor. This change should have no effect of SSH implementations that follow the specification. - ssh(1): add a %j token that expands to the configured ProxyJump hostname (or the empty string if this option is not being used) that can be used in a number of ssh_config(5) keywords. - ssh(1): add ChannelTimeout support to the client, mirroring the same option in the server and allowing ssh(1) to terminate quiescent channels. - ssh(1), sshd(8), ssh-add(1), ssh-keygen(1): add support for reading ED25519 private

But for release build we should have LXC_DEVEL=0. LXC_DEVEL is a variable that appears in the /usr/include/lxc/version.h and then can be (and actually it is) used by other projects to detect if liblxc-dev is a development build or stable. Having LXC_DEVEL=1 makes problems for the users who want to build projects those are depend on liblxc from source (for example, LXD, go-lxc: https://github.com/canonical/lxd/pull/12420). Q: Why it was not a problem for so long? A: Because LXC API was stable for a long time, but recently we have extended liblxc API (https://github.com/lxc/lxc/pull/4260) and dependant package go-lxc was updated too (https://github.com/lxc/go-lxc/pull/166). This change was developed properly to be backward compatible with the old versions of liblxc. But, there is a problem. If LXC_DEVEL=1 then the macro check VERSION_AT_LEAST (https://github.com/lxc/go-lxc/blob/ccae595aa49e779f7ecc9250329967aa546acd31/lxc-binding.h#L7) is disabled. That's why we should *not* have LXC_DEVEL=1 for *any* release build of LXC. [ Test Plan ] Install liblxc-dev package and check /usr/include/lxc/version.h file LXC_DEVEL should be 0 [ Where problems could occur ] Theoretically, build of a software which depends on liblxc-dev may start to fail if it assumes that LXC_DEVEL is 1. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2002043] Re: Python extension modules get built using wrong compiler flags with python2
Hello Nafees, or anyone else affected, Accepted python2.7 into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/python2.7/2.7.18-13ubuntu1.2 in a few hours, and then in the -proposed repository. Please help us by testing this new package. See https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this update out to other Ubuntu users. If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug, mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed- jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification- failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will not be able to proceed. Further information regarding the verification process can be found at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in advance for helping! N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s) fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in -proposed for a minimum of 7 days. ** Changed in: python2.7 (Ubuntu Jammy) Status: In Progress => Fix Committed ** Tags added: verification-needed verification-needed-jammy -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to python2.7 in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2002043 Title: Python extension modules get built using wrong compiler flags with python2 Status in python2.7 package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in python2.7 source package in Bionic: Won't Fix Status in python2.7 source package in Focal: In Progress Status in python2.7 source package in Jammy: Fix Committed Status in python2.7 source package in Kinetic: Invalid Status in python2.7 source package in Lunar: Invalid Status in python2.7 source package in Mantic: Invalid Bug description: [ Impact ] When compiling Python extensions using Python2, CFLAGS optimization flags are dropped. The fix modifies the portion of code in Lib/distutils/sysconfig.py which gets the cflags from the environments, and includes the dropped OPT flag from get_config_vars(). [ Test Plan ] There will be 2 separate tests for this bug: * Ensuring no-change rebuilds are not changed * Ensuring local builds are not changed unless environment variable is set Test 1) No-change rebuilds To test that no-change rebuilds are not changed, the package python- stdlib-extensions will be built against the new python2.7, and confirm the compiler flags are not altered. This will be a manual test and visual inspection of the build logs. Test 2) Functional test 1. Create test container $ lxc launch ubuntu:jammy jammy-2002043 $ lxc shell ubuntu:jammy jammy-2002043 2. Basically, the flow used to be in 20.04: GRUB > Splash screen > Login prompt Currently in 22.04: GRUB > Splash screen > Messages (in the attached file) > Splash screen again for a sec > Login prompt All of those messages already existed in 20.04, the difference is that they were not appearing during boot. I was able to get rid of the "usb" related messages by just adding "loglevel=0" in GRUB. Currently is "quiet loglevel=0 splash". Regarding the fsck related message, I can get rid of them by adding "fsck.mode=skip". However, I do not want to just disable fsck or set the loglevel to 0. This is not a sustainable solution. Something definitely changed here. These messages are not of enough relevance to be shown at boot by default, and they should remain hidden like they were in Focal. [Touch-packages] [Bug 2039873] Re: [SRU] liblxc-dev was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 in Ubuntu 22.04 and later releases
Because, this is a production build of package. LXC_DEVEL is about type of build not about version. For any package builds we should have LXC_DEVEL=0. The only case when LXC_DEVEL=1 is when you are doing local development of the LXC and building it for your self, or you building a package to install it on the CI VMs for testing purposes. Because whan LXC_DEVEL does it it effectively disables all the VERSION_AT_LEAST checks and make all of them to pass. Which is absolutely incorrect for any production builds. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to lxc in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2039873 Title: [SRU] liblxc-dev was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 in Ubuntu 22.04 and later releases Status in lxc package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Status in lxc source package in Jammy: Confirmed Status in lxc source package in Mantic: Fix Committed Status in lxc source package in Noble: Fix Released Bug description: [ Impact ] LXC 5.0.0 was built with LXC_DEVEL=1 set for Jammy.
