[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055226] Re: mount option `users` blocks ntfs to mount

2024-02-29 Thread Seth Arnold
Hello, thanks for the report; note that the fstab(5) and mount(8) man
pages both say "user", singular, not "users", plural. That's probably
why your mount command didn't work when run as a user.

I don't know about the gio or udisksctl tool errors, I'm unfamiliar with
their operation. Maybe they were also looking for "user"?

Thanks

  This worked fine until Ubuntu 20.04, but since 22.04 I have these

  Additionally, mount option `users` does not, what it should do:

  $ LC_ALL=C mount /media/Sicherung

  Please check '/dev/sda7' and the ntfs-3g binary permissions,

  When removing `users` from /etc/fstab, it works fine:

  $ gio mount -d /dev/sda7

  Feb 28 00:05:31 T500 udisksd[583]: Mounted /dev/sda7 (system) at

  So it seems, that option `users` virtually effectuates the opposite,
  than it is supposed to do.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055135] Re: [CREF-XX, Conexant SN6140, Black Headphone Out, Left] No sound at all

2024-02-29 Thread Seth Arnold
I suggest talking with the virtualbox devs:

[4.040754] UBSAN: array-index-out-of-bounds in
/tmp/vbox.0/common/log/log.c:1791:41

It may or may not be related to your audio issues, but it can't be good.

Thanks

  The Ironic project's CI has been having major blocking issues moving
  to utilizing Ubuntu Jammy and with some investigation we were able to
  isolate the issues down to the dhcp updates causing dnsmasq to crash
  on Ubuntu Jammy, which ships with dnsmasq 2.86. This issue sounds
  similar to an issue known about to the dnsmasq maintainers, where
  dnsmasq would crash with updates occurring due to configuration
  refresh[0].

  This resulted in us upgrading dnsmasq to the version which ships with
  Ubuntu Lunar.

  Which was no better. Dnsmasq still crashed upon record updates for
  addresses and ports getting configuration added/changed/removed.

  We later downgraded to the version of dnsmasq shipped in Ubuntu Focal,
  and dnsmasq stopped crashing and appeared stable enough to utilize for
  CI purposes.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2026757] Re: dnsmasq on Ubuntu Jammy crashes on neutron-dhcp-agent updates

2024-02-29 Thread Julia Kreger
Indeed, and unfortunately it seems like I've been able to identify the
root cause which is still present in 2.90. What changed, we're no longer
seeing a segfault which was the tell-tale sign we were looking for, but
instead we just see it quietly exit with no trace. This led me to
getting a setup where I could reproduce the issue, which we've seen
trigger on Ironic's "standalone" jobs as they exercise a number of
different scenarios involving port/address updates quite a bit, and I
just sat with strace attached to the dnsmasq process.

The above was captured from a dnsmasq install with
https://thekelleys.org.uk/gitweb/?p=dnsmasq.git;a=commit;h=10d8b5f001a34ff46b3a72575f3af64b065f8637
 where as running the commit before it, I don't crash out dnsmasq. The result
with 2.90 is basically identical (https://paste.openstack.org/show/823338/).

In terms of the actual logging which results, all we get is along the
lines of https://paste.opendev.org/show/823337/, at least with the
install on jammy, where neutron is directly launching the dnsmasq
processes. Looking at the contents of the commit where this starts
(https://thekelleys.org.uk/gitweb/?p=dnsmasq.git;a=blobdiff;f=src/option.c;h=23cf058e8ad9fdcffe621ce0b92d626578d31f82;hp=e8926a49f46050eea9cba7cc90e12d67821f3a2f;hb=10d8b5f001a34ff46b3a72575f3af64b065f8637;hpb=ffd3ceb856eb3e1ff923cae95a2ddb889beab7c1),
it is clear that the logic has been changed into a different which
explains the error we are able to capture with stracce.

I think ironic is going to have to pin to dnsmasq 2.85 for the time
being, until we're able to get this fixed and fully understood in
upstream dnsmasq since this is impacting numerous CI branches and test
jobs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055479] [NEW] I2S DAC not loading

2024-02-29 Thread Graham Haddock
Public bug reported:

I am attempting to add an I2S DAC for line level output on a Raspberry
Pi 5.

The hardware is a Pimoroni Audio DAC Shim which uses the
dtoverlay=hifiberry-dac

The hardware, when used with Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm) configured per
instructions works fine, this I2S output DAC appears in the sound output
selector pull-down, line-out works, so hardware and connections are
good.

When installed and configured on Ubuntu 23.10 Desktop, fully updated to
current, the I2S DAC output does appear in the sound pull-down selector
window, so the I2S DAC output can not be selected, and is not
functional.

Configuration consists of adding the following to the /boot/firmware/config.txt
file:
dtparam=i2s=on
dtoverlay=hifiberry-dac

When a user signs into Ubuntu, a pair of error messages appears 25 times
in the CLI ttyAMA10 output:

[   23.126215] designware-i2s 1f000a.i2s: ASoC: error at
snd_soc_dai_set_bclk_ratio on 1f000a.i2s: -22

[ 23.136303] HifiBerry DAC: ASoC: error at snd_soc_link_hw_params on
HifiBerry DAC: -22

This seems to reference some kind of failure to initialize an I2S bit
clock ratio parameter on the part of designware-i2s, which causes
HiFiBerry DAC to error out.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055304] Re: openssl 3.0.2 backport IgnoreUnexpectedEOF ssl config option from 3.2

2024-02-29 Thread Hanno Zysik
Actually, it seems that most programs ignore the openssl.cnf anyway for
security(?) reasons. Played a bit with MinTlsVersion and it did not
change the request which is being sent. Luckily I could ask the DevOps
for the nginx versions used and they have versions with the openssl 3
fix; that comes with nginx 1.21.2. Maybe there is a firewall setting
causing this. Would not be the first time, hah... I will see.

But anwyay, as the openssl.cnf is ignored anyway this report is quite
invalid - does not help. :-D

  AFAIS "SSL_OP_IGNORE_UNEXPECTED_EOF" can help here. With 3.2[0] it can
  be configured in openssl.cnf, whereas 3.0[1] cannot. Would you mind to
  backport the mini patch[2] to be configured with 3.0, too?

  Example:
  $ tail -n 3 /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf

  Options = IgnoreUnexpectedEOF

  [ Test Plan ]

  Test cases were added to the autopkgtest to cover the testing:

  * python: test_2024a
  * python-icu: test_2024a (only for focal and newer)

  So the test plan is to check that the autopkgtest succeeds.

  [ Other Info ]

  The autopkgtest for chrony is flaky on jammy and newer (see bug

  * Palestine springs forward a week later after Ramadan.
  * zic no longer pretends to support indefinite-past DST.
  * localtime no longer mishandles Ciudad Juárez in 2422.

  [ Test Plan ]

  Test cases were added to the autopkgtest to cover the testing:

  * python: test_2024a
  * python-icu: test_2024a (only for focal and newer)

  So the test plan is to check that the autopkgtest succeeds.

  [ Other Info ]

  The autopkgtest for chrony is flaky on jammy and newer (see bug
  #2002910).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055304] Re: openssl 3.0.2 backport IgnoreUnexpectedEOF ssl config option from 3.2

2024-02-29 Thread Adrien Nader
Thanks for continued investigation.

A reproducer would be valuable as it would allow me to verify
independently the patch is effective, within the limits of the
understanding of the situation of course and that can be especially
time-consuming when not having access to the remote server. :/
A reproducer here can be along the lines of install ubuntu foo to get
nginx bar, configure nginx with TLS and baz and use a given curl
command.
Right now it's difficult to say if you're missing something since I
can't test by myself and compare.
A reproducer is also going to be a required proof in practice for the
change to be done in any past release.

Timeline-wise, either this change gets into 24.04 which is entering
Feature Freeze today, or it will wait for the development cycle of 24.10
when openssl is updated to >= 3.2 (probably 3.3). Then only will it be
possible to also backport this to 22.04 which I guess is the release you
are interested in.

  I get "Closing connection 0 curl: (35) error:0A000126:SSL

  AFAIS "SSL_OP_IGNORE_UNEXPECTED_EOF" can help here. With 3.2[0] it can
  be configured in openssl.cnf, whereas 3.0[1] cannot. Would you mind to
  backport the mini patch[2] to be configured with 3.0, too?

  Example:
  $ tail -n 3 /etc/ssl/openssl.cnf
  [system_default_sect]
  CipherString = DEFAULT:@SECLEVEL=2
  Options = IgnoreUnexpectedEOF

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055455] [NEW] dnsmasq-base causes network device virbr0 to shut down

2024-02-29 Thread Box Noise
Public bug reported:

Installing dnsmasq-base v2.90-0ubuntu0.22.04.1 causes network device

  [Impact]
  The last couple of days, I have been unable to run a successful debootstrap
for Noble Numbat.

  Apparently this is caused by the addition of symlinks (/bin, /lib,
  /lib64 and /sbin) in base-files 13ubuntu7. According to
  debootstrap.log, it fails to extract said symlinks because they
  already exist at that point.

  This can be reproduced on build hosts running Jammy Jellyfish against
  any up-to-date Ubuntu public archive mirror as of today.

The regression in debuerreotype is expected due to the included change
from the previous SRU (LP: #1990856), packages are now extracted in a
different order for the test case, hence some time stamps shifted.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2019026] Re: systemd /tmp cleaning is suboptimal

Title:
  systemd /tmp cleaning is suboptimal

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed
Status in systemd source package in Noble:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Historically on Debian and Ubuntu, before systemd, the default
  handling of /tmp was to periodically, and at boot, remove all
  files/directories older than 30 days; and leave other contents alone.

  With the move to systemd, the "default" (really, hard-coded in
  /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf) is to not clean /tmp periodically, but
  at boot to remove all contents.

  This is suboptimal for two reasons.

  By cleaning /tmp *only* at boot, if a system makes heavy use of /tmp
  and has lots of inodes under it, possibly due to failures of some
  process to clean up after itself, at boot the system will be
  unavailable for an unnecessarily long time while these files are
  removed.

  By cleaning *all* files under /tmp, this makes a reboot an Event where
  in-progress files may be unnecessarily lost.

  While the FHS does not *guarantee* that files under /tmp will persist
  across boot (because /tmp may be a tmpfs), it also does not *require*
  that /tmp be cleared on boot.

 Although data stored in /tmp may be deleted in a site-specific
 manner, it is recommended that files and directories located in
 /tmp be deleted whenever the system is booted.

 FHS added this recommendation on the basis of historical
 precedent and common practice, but did not make it a
 requirement because system administration is not within the
 scope of this standard.

  I therefore believe the correct value for /usr/lib/tmpfiles.d/tmp.conf
  to restore past behavior is 'd /tmp 1777 root root 30d'.

  Customers report a command going through PAM crashing for a given user.
  A potential follow on issue can be that no ssh remote connections to an
affected server are possible anymore, esp. painful with headless systems (was
reported on a different distro).

  This is caused by an issue in modules/pam_lastlog/pam_lastlog.c:
  with tm = localtime_r(...) that can be NULL and needs to be handled.

  There are two such cases in modules/pam_lastlog/pam_lastlog.c (here noble):
  314-  ll_time = last_login.ll_time;
  315:  if ((tm = localtime_r (_time, _buf)) != NULL) {

  577-  strftime (the_time, sizeof (the_time),

https://github.com/linux-pam/linux-pam/commit/40c271164dbcebfc5304d0537a42fb42e6b6803c

  This fix should be included in Ubuntu (and Debian).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2054925] Re: Debootstrap fails for Noble with base-files 13ubuntu7

2024-02-29 Thread Paul Mars
Building an noble image with ubuntu-image, using debootstrap
1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.7, worked (on a amd64 Jammy).

Bug description:

  # lsb_release -a
  No LSB modules are available.
  Distributor ID:   Ubuntu
  Description:  Ubuntu 22.04.4 LTS
  Release:  22.04
  Codename: jammy

  # apt-cache policy debootstrap
  debootstrap:
    Installed: 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5
    Candidate: 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5
    Version table:
   *** 1.0.126+nmu1ubuntu0.5 500

  500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main amd64 Packages
  500 http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu jammy/main i386 Packages

  Attached shell output of two runs of debootstrap. First run uses
  mirror archive.ubuntu.com (which as of this report serves base-files
  version 13ubuntu7), and second run uses a local custom mirror (which
  serves base-files 13ubuntu6). First run fails, second run succeeds.

  [Test plan]
  Successfully for each of focal, jammy, mantic, noble
  - debootstrap
  - mk-sbuild
  - pbuilder-dist $release create
  - ubuntu-image, if we can pull debootstrap from proposed for this

  as well as

  - debootstrap noble --merged-usr

  [Where problems could occur]
  We do not anticipate any regressions as we replace the previous *) case for
usrmerge for post-hirsute with a new jammy|kinetic|lunar|mantic one, and the
new solution will only impact noble and onward.

  That said, this is a different approach than mantic and newer take,
  and a different approach than Debian takes, where they moved to
  merging post-extraction, even in stable releases.

  systemd /tmp cleaning is suboptimal

Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:

Status in systemd source package in Noble:

  Sebastian Andrzej Siewior has uploaded it to experimental and after a
  few fixes for integration (due to extra output on stderr in

  I expect tests to pass now considering they almost all succeeded with the
first upload.
  I am aware of tweaks to other packages too but I'm not sure they will
actually be needed with this new upload and since they relate to pristine-tar

migrations.

I think that commit simply makes it possible to use oneTBB, which
doesn't give a warning. But if you use TBB 2020.3 or older, then you
still get a warning.

https://github.com/canonical/cloud-init/commit/0ca5f31043e2d98eab31a43d9dde9bdaef1435cb

  The issue here is that the instance is not reachable from the same subnet via
the private ipv4 of the primary NIC,
  packets are routed to egress via ens6 and dropped.

  The cause is that interface metrics are not applied to local subnet routes
with systemd 245 (245.4-4ubuntu3.23).
  On newer systemd versions, as in Jammy, the metrics are correctly applied.
  Correcting them

Marking cloud-init as invalid as I think there is no workaround to fix this
issue.
Adding netplan.io for reference and awareness.

After confirmation from systemd-networkd, I wonder if it would be
feasible / reasonable to backport
https://github.com/systemd/systemd/pull/19344 to focal.

Bug description:
  The pam version(s) in Debian (checked buster) and Ubuntu (checked focal to
noble) are affected by
  https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=2012871

  Customers report a command going through PAM crashing for a given user.
  A potential follow on issue can be that no ssh remote connections to an
affected server are possible anymore, esp. painful with headless systems (was
reported on a different distro).

  This is caused by an issue in modules/pam_lastlog/pam_lastlog.c:
  with tm = localtime_r(...) that can be NULL and needs to be handled.

  There are two such cases in modules/pam_lastlog/pam_lastlog.c (here noble):
  314-  ll_time = last_login.ll_time;
  315:  if ((tm = localtime_r (_time, _buf)) != NULL) {
  316-  strftime (the_time, sizeof (the_time),
  317- /* TRANSLATORS: "strftime options for date of last
login" */
  --
  574-
  575-  lf_time = utuser.ut_tv.tv_sec;
  576:  tm = localtime_r (_time, _buf);
  577-  strftime (the_time, sizeof (the_time),
  578- /* TRANSLATORS: "strftime options for date of last login" */

  Case 1 (line 315) is properly handled, but not case 2 (line 576).

  The second case got fixed by:

https://github.com/linux-pam/linux-pam/commit/40c271164dbcebfc5304d0537a42fb42e6b6803c

  This fix should be included in Ubuntu (and Debian).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2055397] [NEW] netplan/systemd-networkd: route metric not applied to routes to the local subnet

2024-02-29 Thread Alberto Contreras
Public bug reported:

Cloud-init introduced a feature to configure policy routing on AWS EC2
instances with multiple NICs in
https://github.com/canonical/cloud-init/commit/0ca5f31043e2d98eab31a43d9dde9bdaef1435cb
 targeting v24.1.

Cloud-init generates the following netplan config:

```
$ cat /etc/netplan/50-cloud-init.yaml
network:
ethernets:
ens5:
dhcp4: true
dhcp4-overrides:
route-metric: 100
dhcp6: true
dhcp6-overrides: *id001
match:
macaddress: 0a:c8:ab:90:c2:fb
set-name: ens5
ens6:
dhcp4: true
dhcp4-overrides:
route-metric: 200
use-routes: true
dhcp6: false
match:
macaddress: 0a:c6:55:a1:dc:3b
routes:
-   table: 101
to: 0.0.0.0/0
via: 192.168.0.1
-   table: 101
to: 192.168.0.0/20
routing-policy:
-   from: 192.168.10.212
table: 101
set-name: ens6
version: 2
```

Which renders the following systemd-networkd config files:

```
$ cat 10-netplan-ens5.link
[Match]
MACAddress=0a:c8:ab:90:c2:fb
[Link]
Name=ens5
WakeOnLan=off
[RoutingPolicyRule]
Which configures the instance with the following state in Ubuntu Focal:
```

$ ip route show table 101

192.168.0.0/20 dev ens6 proto static scope link
```
The issue here is that the instance is not reachable from the same subnet via
the private ipv4 of the primary NIC,
packets are routed to egress via ens6 and dropped.
The cause is that interface metrics are not applied to local subnet routes with
systemd 245 (245.4-4ubuntu3.23).
On newer systemd versions, as in Jammy, the metrics are correctly applied.
Correcting them manually fixes the issue in Focal.
Expected main route table:
default via 192.168.0.1 dev ens5 proto dhcp src 192.168.12.94 metric 100
default via 192.168.0.1 dev ens6 proto dhcp src 192.168.10.212 metric 200
192.168.0.1 dev ens6 proto dhcp scope link src 192.168.10.212 metric 200
It looks like the upstream systemd issue and PR fixing this problem are:
This bug was fixed in the package kbd - 2.6.4-2ubuntu1
---
kbd (2.6.4-2ubuntu1) noble; urgency=medium
  * Merge with Debian unstable (LP: #2055065). Remaining changes:
- Add setfont, kbd_mode, and loadkeys to initramfs for console-setup.
- Use ckbcomp to get the keyboard layout if other data files are not
  available.
- Change loadkeys to find any console not in raw mode when invoked
  without an explicit console parameter, in case the foreground console
  is in raw mode.
- debian/control: Depend on console-setup | console-setup-mini, since
  console-setup-mini also Depends on kbd now through console-setup-linux.
- Add setvtrgb to kbd-udeb (LP #730672).
  * Dropped unnecessary changelog entries
- Added initramfs hook to have setfont/loadkeys available in initramfs.
  + This is basically a duplicate of:
Title:
  Annoying boot messages interfering with splash screen
Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Status in plymouth package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in systemd package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress
Bug description:
  [ Impact ]
  Kernel (and systemd) log messages appear during boot for many
  machines, when the user should be seeing only the BIOS logo and/or
  Plymouth splash screens.
  [ Workaround ]
  On most machines you can hide the problem by using these kernel parameters
together:
quiet splash loglevel=2 fastboot
  [ Test Plan ]
  1. Boot Ubuntu on a number of laptops that have the problem and verify no
console text messages appear during boot.
  2. Verify you can switch VTs (e.g. Ctrl + Alt + F4) and log into them still.
  3. Reboot Ubuntu and remove the "splash" kernel parameter, now messages
should appear.
  [ Where problems could occur ]
  Since the fix works by deferring fbcon's takeover of the console, the
  main problem encountered during its development was the inability to
  VT switch.
  [ Original Description ]
  Since upgrading from 20.04.6 Desktop to 22.04, the boot screen is not
  as clean as it used to be.
  Basically, the flow used to be in 20.04:
  GRUB > Splash screen > Login prompt
  Currently in 22.04:
  GRUB > Splash screen > Messages (in the attached file) > Splash screen
  again for a sec > Login prompt
  All of those messages already existed in 20.04, the difference is that
  they were not appearing during boot.
  I was able to get rid of the "usb" related messages by just adding
  "loglevel=0" in GRUB. Currently is "quiet loglevel=0 splash".
  Regarding the fsck related message, I can get rid of them by adding
  "fsck.mode=skip".
  However, I do not want to just disable fsck or set the loglevel to 0.
  This is not a sustainable solution.
  Something definitely changed here. These messages are not of enough
  relevance to be shown at boot by default, and they should remain
  hidden like they were in Focal.
  Obviously a minor issue, but important to the whole look and feel of
  the OS for desktop.
