[Touch-packages] [Bug 2056696] Re: All Snaps are denied the ability to use DBus for notifications and apptray indicators in KDE-based flavors

2024-03-19 Thread Alex Murray
So I installed kubuntu-desktop on an up-to-date noble VM and then after
logging into the kubuntu session I was able to reproduce the issue for
Notifications but I couldn't see anything owning the /StatusNotifierItem
dbus path.

For notifications I submitted
https://github.com/snapcore/snapd/pull/13737 to snapd which should
resolve that but if anyone can help me reproduce the issue for the
status notifier item that would be great. FWIW I have attached a
screenshot of d-feet showing the various dbus paths owned by plasmashell
and /StatusNotifierItem is not listed. Am I perhaps missing some other
package that doesn't get pulled in by the standard kubuntu-desktop
metapackage?

Title:
  All Snaps are denied the ability to use DBus for notifications and
  apptray indicators in KDE-based flavors

Status in snapd:
  New
Status in apparmor package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  OS: Kubuntu Noble 24.04 Alpha (two-day old install)
  snapd version: 2.61.2
  Affected Snaps: firefox, thunderbird, element-desktop

  Steps to reproduce:

  # For Firefox:
  1. Open the Firefox Snap.
  2. Open https://www.bennish.net/web-notifications.html.
  3. Click "Authorize" and allow the website to send notifications.
  4. Click "Show".
  Expected result: A notification should be displayed by Plasma, similar to
other notifications the system displays.
  Actual result: The notification shows up in the upper-right corner of the
display, improperly themed and obviously generated by Firefox as a fallback.

  # For Thunderbird:
  1. Open the Thunderbird Snap.
  2. Ensure you are connected to an email account.
  3. Unfocus the Thunderbird window.
  4. Wait for an email to come through.
  Expected result: When the email comes through, a notification should be
displayed by Plasma, similar to other notifications the system displays.
  Actual result: The notification shows up improperly themed and obviously
generated by Thunderbird as a fallback.

  # For Element:
  1. Open the Element Snap.
  Expected result: An apptray indicator should appear in the system tray with
the Element logo.
  Actual result: No such indicator appears.
  2. Log in, ask someone to ping you, then unfocus the window and wait for the
ping to come through.
  Expected result: A notification should be displayed by Plasma, similar to
other notifications the system displays.
  Actual result: No notification appears at all.

  Additional information:

  Based on the output of snappy-debug, this appears to be AppArmor related, at
least for element-desktop (but presumably for the others too). Of note are some
of the following log entries:
  ```
  ```

  Booting with `apparmor=0` set on the kernel command line fixes the
  issue with Element (apptray indicator appears, notifications show up).
  Obviously this is not a solution, but it does isolate AppArmor as
  being at least partially at fault.

  This issue seems to be somewhat similar to
  https://forum.snapcraft.io/t/dbus-related-apparmor-denials/37422,

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2033892] Autopkgtest regression report (coreutils/8.32-4.1ubuntu1.2)

2024-03-19 Thread Ubuntu SRU Bot
All autopkgtests for the newly accepted coreutils (8.32-4.1ubuntu1.2) for jammy
have finished running.
The following regressions have been reported in tests triggered by the package:

coreutils/unknown (arm64, ppc64el, s390x)
dotnet6/6.0.127-0ubuntu1~22.04.1 (amd64, arm64)
linux-gcp-5.19/5.19.0-1030.32~22.04.1 (arm64)
linux-gcp-6.2/6.2.0-1021.23~22.04.1 (arm64)
linux-hwe-5.19/5.19.0-50.50 (arm64)
linux-hwe-6.5/6.5.0-27.28~22.04.1 (arm64)

Please visit the excuses page listed below and investigate the failures,
proceeding afterwards as per the StableReleaseUpdates policy regarding
autopkgtest regressions [1].

Title:
  ls -l triggers mount of autofs shares when --ghost option is present
  or browse_mode is enabled

Status in coreutils package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in coreutils source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed
Status in coreutils package in Fedora:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

  Issuing a 'ls -l' or a 'stat' on an autofs share when you have set
  --ghost in the auto.master file, or browse_mode=yes in autofs.conf
  will lead to the shares being mounted, when they didn't previously.

  Disks / shares may not be present and the mounts may fail, leading to
  errors in your output.

  This is a behaviour change in autofs 8.32, which occurred in the
  transition to using statx() instead of stat()/lstat() in previous
  releases.

  There doesn't seem to be any workarounds, apart from not running a 'ls
  -l' in your autofs share directory.

  [Testcase]

  Start two Jammy VMs. One will be a NFS server, the other, the client.

  NFS server:

  Server VM:
  $ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname jammy-nfs-server
  $ sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  $ sudo apt install nfs-kernel-server
  $ sudo mkdir /export
  $ sudo mkdir /export/users
  $ sudo vi /etc/exports # add the following lines:
  /export 192.168.122.0/24(rw,fsid=0,no_subtree_check,sync)
  /export/users 192.168.122.0/24(rw,nohide,insecure,no_subtree_check,sync)
  $ sudo systemctl restart nfs-server.service

  AutoFS Client:
  $ sudo apt update
  $ sudo apt install autofs
  $ sudo vim /etc/autofs.conf
  browse_mode = yes
  $ sudo mkdir /mnt2
  $ sudo vim /etc/auto.master
  /mnt2 /etc/auto.indirect
  $ sudo vim /etc/auto.indirect
  export 192.168.122.18:/export
  export-missing 192.168.122.18:/export-missing
  $ sudo reboot
  $ cd /mnt2
  $ ls -l
  ls: cannot access 'export-missing': No such file or directory
  total 4
  drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 12 21:48 export
  d? ? ??   ?? export-missing
  $ mount -l | grep /mnt2
  /etc/auto.indirect on /mnt2 type autofs
(rw,relatime,fd=6,pgrp=634,timeout=300,minproto=5,maxproto=5,indirect,pipe_ino=21561)
  192.168.122.18:/export on /mnt2/export type nfs
(rw,relatime,vers=3,rsize=524288,wsize=524288,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,mountaddr=192.168.122.18,mountvers=3,mountport=35786,mountproto=udp,local_lock=none,addr=192.168.122.18)

  We see the mount for export occurred, and export-missing was
  attempted, but it was either bogus or the disk was not present,
  leading to a "No such file or directory" error.

  There are test packages available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf378489-test

  If you install them, this is what should occur:

  $ ls -l
  total 0
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Feb 12 22:01 export
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Feb 12 22:01 export-missing
  $ mount -l | grep /mnt2
  /etc/auto.indirect on /mnt2 type autofs
(rw,relatime,fd=6,pgrp=636,timeout=300,minproto=5,maxproto=5,indirect,pipe_ino=18346)

  No mounts happen, and no errors either.

  [Where problems could occur]

  We are changing the behaviour of core utilities, ls and stat, such
  that they no longer attempt to mount autofs shares when --ghost option
  is present or browse_mode is enabled.

  This is the intended behaviour in the first place, and has been this
  way for at least a decade prior, and was changed to return to this
  behaviour shortly after the release of coreutils that introduced
  statx() that caused automounts to occur.

  It is unlikely any system administrators are relying on the behaviour
  found in jammy in any scripts or day to day operations that would be
  adversely affected by the change. The worst case scenario is that a
  user doing an 'ls -l' on an unmounted disk finds the mount doesn't
  automatically occur, and they have to attach the disk and issue the
  mount themselves.

  If a regression were to occur, it would be limited to the ls and stat
  commands, specifically when listing directories linked to autofs

   * MAAS cannot PXE-boot a machine that has iSCSI disks

   * Focal is the default Ubuntu distribution deployed by MAAS, so we should
 back-port this to ensure it works out-of-the-box.

  [ Test Plan ]

   * reproducing this issue requires a machine with iSCSI disks (Cisco UCS
Manager
   in the original report), and a MAAS controller (3.4 or better)

   * the issue can be observed by simply enlisting the machine in MAAS. It will
   fail to boot due to the missing BOOTIF configuration.

  [ Where problems could occur ]

   * the problematic code was an attempt to fix LP#2037202, so we should watch
out
   for regressions.

  [ Original report ]

  we have a bad interaction between initramfs-tools and open-iscsi,
  resulting in the boot interface not being configured.

  when the iscsi has a static address, the script `local-top/iscsi` from
  open-iscsi creates a /run/net-$DEVICE.conf file for the iscsi
  interface. The existence of this file makes configure_networking()
  skip configuring the BOOTIF later due to this code in
  `scripts/functions`:

  for x in /run/net-"${DEVICE}".conf /run/net-*.conf ; do
  if [ -e "$x" ]; then
  IP=done
  break
  fi
  done

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2056187] Re: fails to configure BOOTIF when using iscsi

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

  [ Original report ]

  we have a bad interaction between initramfs-tools and open-iscsi,
  resulting in the boot interface not being configured.

  when the iscsi has a static address, the script `local-top/iscsi` from
  open-iscsi creates a /run/net-$DEVICE.conf file for the iscsi
  interface. The existence of this file makes configure_networking()
  skip configuring the BOOTIF later due to this code in
  `scripts/functions`:

  for x in /run/net-"${DEVICE}".conf /run/net-*.conf ; do
  if [ -e "$x" ]; then
  IP=done
  break
  fi
  done

Bug description:

  Kernel (and systemd) log messages appear during boot for many
  machines, when the user should be seeing only the BIOS logo and/or
  Plymouth splash screens.

  [ Workaround ]

  On most machines you can hide the problem by using these kernel parameters
together:
    quiet splash loglevel=3 fastboot

  [ Original Description ]

  Since upgrading from 20.04.6 Desktop to 22.04, the boot screen is not
  as clean as it used to be.

  Basically, the flow used to be in 20.04:

  GRUB > Splash screen > Login prompt

  Currently in 22.04:

  GRUB > Splash screen > Messages (in the attached file) > Splash screen
  again for a sec > Login prompt

  All of those messages already existed in 20.04, the difference is that
  they were not appearing during boot.

  I was able to get rid of the "usb" related messages by just adding
  "loglevel=0" in GRUB. Currently is "quiet loglevel=0 splash".

  Regarding the fsck related message, I can get rid of them by adding
  "fsck.mode=skip".

  However, I do not want to just disable fsck or set the loglevel to 0.
  This is not a sustainable solution.

  Something definitely changed here. These messages are not of enough
  relevance to be shown at boot by default, and they should remain
  hidden like they were in Focal.

  Obviously a minor issue, but important to the whole look and feel of
  the OS for desktop.

Bug description:
  Boot animations start too late to be useful

  Modern systems spend all their boot time (a couple of seconds)
  decompressing the kernel. During that time the user only sees the
  static BIOS logo (ACPI BGRT). Then when Plymouth can finally start
  animating, the startup process is already finished and there's
  virtually no time left to show any useful animations.

  This could be fixed in:

    grub: By adding a splash under the BIOS logo to show some progress
  _before_ a Linux kernel is even started

  and/or

    plymouth: By preferencing legacy framebuffer devices (like EFI) over
  DRM, if we find those are available a few seconds sooner. That would
  also fix bug 1868240 completely, and bug 1836858 mostly as the flicker
  moves to when the login screen starts.

verification on Jammy:

Enabled the jammy-propsed from "Software & Updates". ran 'sudo apt-get
update; sudo apt install pulseaudio', the pulseaudio
1:15.99.1+dfsg1-1ubuntu2.2 was installed, reboot the system:

non-audio bt devices (pairing, reconnect, functional test all pass):
 - piano2 (bt keyboard)
 - bluetooth laser travel mouse (logic bt mouse)

audio bt devices (pairing, reconect, set a2dp and hsp/hfp, playback and
capture, all test pass)
 - xt99 (lenovo thinkplus bt headset)
 - plt_btgo2 (bt headset)
 - soaiy s18 (bt sound bar)

Bug description:
  [Summary]
  When use the ThinkPluse xt99 bluetooth head set to run the test
com.canonical.certification::bluetooth/audio_record_playback, it cannot record
the sound and playback.
  It seems this device cannot switch to Hand free mode in this platform.

  [Steps to reproduce]
  Connect the ThinkPluse xt99, use the Handfree mode, then try to record some
voice.

  [Expected result]
  The bluetooth headset ThinkPluse xt99 can use as a MIC to input sound.

  [Actual result]
  The bluetooth headset xt99 cannot work in the Handfree mode.

  [Failure rate]
  100%

  [Impact]
  With the current Ubuntu 22.04 oem image, we try to connect the LENOVO
  XT99 bt headset and let it work in HFP mode, we select HFP profile
  from gnome sound-setting, but the microphone will not auto change to
  bt microphone and the bt output could not work too. So this BT headset
  could only work in A2DP mode with the current 22.04 OEM image.

  And we tried ubuntu 22.04 generic image, mantic image and noble image,
  none of them could make the headset work in HFP mode.

  [Fix]
  Cherry-pick a pulseaudio commit from upstream.

  [Test]
  I installed ubuntu 22.04 and 23.10 on 2 different Thinkpad laptops, then
upgraded the pulseaudio from my ppa (ppa:hui.wang/pa-testing), in theory my
change only affects bluetooth audio devices, it will not bring any impact to
non-audio bluetooth devices, here I did the test with 7 bluetooth audio devices
and 2 non-audio devices:

  BT audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, playback and capture
all worked well):
  PLT_BBTGO2 (headset)
  Xiaomi Air3 SE (headset)
  Crusher Wireless (headset)
  SOAIY S18 (sound box)
  HK Soho Wireless (headset)
  Thinkplus XT99 (headset)
  Wl-1000X (headset)

  BT non-audio devices (pairing, connection, re-connection, key input all
worked well):
  BT3.0 Keyboard
  The Pinao 2 keyboard

  [Where problems could occur]
  This change will impact bt headset negotiation process in the pulseaudio,
  so the possiblity of regression is limited to bt headset, it could make
  the bt headset fail to connect, but this possibility is very low, we tested
  the patch with different bt headset and bt speaker, all worked well.

verification on mantic:

Install UBUNTU 23.10 on the Lenovo Thinkpad X1C 12Gen, and enable the
mantic-propsed from "Software & Updates". By default, the pulseaudio is
not installed, in the manic, the pipewire replaced the pulseaudio in the
audio stack. I installed the pulseaudio manually by running 'sudo apt-
get update; sudo apt install pulseaudio', the pulseaudio
1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4 was installed and pipewire-alsa was removed.
Increased the priority to 510 for all packages in proposed by adding
proposed-updates in the /etc/apt/preferences.d/, the upgraded the
pulesaudio to  1:16.1+dfsg1-2ubuntu4.1:

non-audio bt devices (pairing, reconnect, functional test all pass):

Title:
  [Vostro 3400, Cirrus Logic CS8409/CS42L42, Speaker, Internal]
  Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Since the last three weeks' updates, I have encountered several
  challenges with the audio functionality on my system. Primarily, upon
  starting my laptop, the audio often fails to work, displaying "Dummy
  Output." To resolve this, I find myself needing to restart the laptop
  two or three times before the audio becomes functional.

  Even when the audio is working, I've noticed a recurring issue where,
  after playing video or audio for approximately 2-3 minutes, the sound
  starts crackling and buzzing. The intensity of these distortions
  gradually increases, resembling the static interference on a radio
  station with a weak signal. This issue persists even when using 3.5mm
  headphones, requiring the use of a USB headset or Bluetooth headphones
  to enjoy distortion-free audio.

  Furthermore, I have observed that, regardless of the Ubuntu version
  (ranging from 22.04 to 22.04.3), I face difficulties changing the
  microphone output settings when an external audio peripheral, such as
  a USB headset, 3.5mm headphones, or Bluetooth headphones, is
  connected. The OS appears to exclusively utilize the microphone from
  the connected peripheral, making it impossible to switch to the
  laptop's built-in microphone.

  For your reference, here are the specifications of my laptop and the
  Ubuntu version I am currently using:

  Laptop: Dell Vostro 3400
  CPU: 11th Gen Intel i5-1135G7
  GPU: Intel TigerLake-LP GT2 Iris Xe
  Memory: 2490MiB / 19720MiB

  DE: GNOME 42.9
  Shell: bash 5.1.16
  Sound Card: Card: HDA Intel PCH, Chip: Cirrus Logic CS8409/CS42L42

  **UPDATE 12/02/2024 Noticed that every time my laptop fan starts spinning the
crackling sound appears, after fan stops the crackling sound disappear.
  **UPDATE 19/03/2024 I did a software update to the linux kernel 6.5.0-26, now
i get a dummy output in sound even if i restart the system many times, and if i
use my Bluetooth headphone i can't use the mic, neither the mic of the laptop
or of the headphone (there is no option is the settings to choose from) it's
all blank.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 2033892] Re: ls -l triggers mount of autofs shares when --ghost option is present or browse_mode is enabled

2024-03-19 Thread Timo Aaltonen
Hello René, or anyone else affected,

Accepted coreutils into jammy-proposed. The package will build now and
be available at
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/coreutils/8.32-4.1ubuntu1.2 in a
few hours, and then in the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed. Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested, what testing has been
performed on the package and change the tag from verification-needed-
jammy to verification-done-jammy. If it does not fix the bug for you,
please add a comment stating that, and change the tag to verification-
failed-jammy. In either case, without details of your testing we will
not be able to proceed.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification .  Thank you in
advance for helping!

N.B. The updated package will be released to -updates after the bug(s)
fixed by this package have been verified and the package has been in
-proposed for a minimum of 7 days.

** Changed in: coreutils (Ubuntu Jammy)
   Status: In Progress => Fix Committed

  NFS server:

  Server VM:
  $ sudo hostnamectl set-hostname jammy-nfs-server
  $ sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  $ sudo apt install nfs-kernel-server
  $ sudo mkdir /export
  $ sudo mkdir /export/users
  $ sudo vi /etc/exports # add the following lines:
  /export 192.168.122.0/24(rw,fsid=0,no_subtree_check,sync)
  /export/users 192.168.122.0/24(rw,nohide,insecure,no_subtree_check,sync)
  $ sudo systemctl restart nfs-server.service

  AutoFS Client:
  $ sudo apt update
  $ sudo apt install autofs
  $ sudo vim /etc/autofs.conf
  browse_mode = yes
  $ sudo mkdir /mnt2
  $ sudo vim /etc/auto.master
  /mnt2 /etc/auto.indirect
  $ sudo vim /etc/auto.indirect
  export 192.168.122.18:/export
  export-missing 192.168.122.18:/export-missing
  $ sudo reboot
  $ cd /mnt2
  $ ls -l
  ls: cannot access 'export-missing': No such file or directory
  total 4
  drwxr-xr-x 3 root root 4096 Feb 12 21:48 export
  d? ? ??   ?? export-missing
  $ mount -l | grep /mnt2
  /etc/auto.indirect on /mnt2 type autofs
(rw,relatime,fd=6,pgrp=634,timeout=300,minproto=5,maxproto=5,indirect,pipe_ino=21561)
  192.168.122.18:/export on /mnt2/export type nfs
(rw,relatime,vers=3,rsize=524288,wsize=524288,namlen=255,hard,proto=tcp,timeo=600,retrans=2,sec=sys,mountaddr=192.168.122.18,mountvers=3,mountport=35786,mountproto=udp,local_lock=none,addr=192.168.122.18)

  We see the mount for export occurred, and export-missing was
  attempted, but it was either bogus or the disk was not present,
  leading to a "No such file or directory" error.

  There are test packages available in the following ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/sf378489-test

  If you install them, this is what should occur:

  $ ls -l
  total 0
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Feb 12 22:01 export
  drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 0 Feb 12 22:01 export-missing
  $ mount -l | grep /mnt2
  /etc/auto.indirect on /mnt2 type autofs
(rw,relatime,fd=6,pgrp=636,timeout=300,minproto=5,maxproto=5,indirect,pipe_ino=18346)

  No mounts happen, and no errors either.

  [Where problems could occur]

  We are changing the behaviour of core utilities, ls and stat, such
  that they no longer attempt to mount autofs shares when --ghost option
  is present or browse_mode is enabled.

  This is the intended behaviour in the first place, and has been this
  way for at least a decade prior, and was changed to return to this
  behaviour shortly after the
