[Touch-packages] [Bug 1812353] Re: content injection in http method (CVE-2019-3462)

2019-01-24 Thread Erlenmayr
@Christoph:
You can put HTTPS URLs into your "sources.list", many mirrors support it. The
package "apt-transport-https" is not required, that is outdated information.
APT supports HTTPS out of the box for a while now, it is just not the default.
Packets will still be validated using the Debian release OpenPGP key,
regardless of which method of transport you use.

> an attacker could have used this long ago to basically do everything
That is the case for any kind of security vulnerability. But the risk is much
higher after the bug is published.

> But is there a chance to e.g. get full audits of apt done by security experts?
Bugs happen, audits don't find all bugs. APT has been around for a while and as
a core infrastructure was reviewed by many people.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1812353] Re: content injection in http method (CVE-2019-3462)

2019-01-22 Thread Erlenmayr
There would be a much lower risk if HTTP (without TLS) were not still
the default for repositories.

This can actually also be abused by a MitM, he can always make your APT
think that there are no new updates (a simple 304 Not Modified works),
and then exploit recent vulnerabilities of which you have not received
the fix.

Firefox can not play some WebM videos generated by avconv on Trusty

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce :
  - Download the source H.264 video attached to this bug
  - On a Trusty machine, convert this video to WebM with avconv -i
P5270914.MOV P5270914-trusty.webm. It should give the same result as attached
  - Open this webm file in Totem or in VLC : it plays correctly
  - Open this webm file in Firefox 29. When you click on play, it goes directly
to the end and does not show anything
  - Open this same webm file in Chromium (tested with version 34) : it plays
correctly

If you generate the WebM file on Precise, with the same command-line, it
plays correctly in Firefox (see attached P5270914-precise.webm).
So I suppose it comes from a difference in the way avconv does the
conversion, that is not correctly supported by Firefox

All tests are made with Precise and Trusty amd64, with all current updates.
  Firefox version 29.0 on both
avconv 9.13-0ubuntu0.14.04.1 on Trusty, and 0.8.10-0ubuntu0.12.04.1 on Precise
