[Touch-packages] [Bug 1683435] Re: Mouse speed/acceleration ignored in 17.04

2017-05-18 Thread Brandon MacEachern
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1682193 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1682193

I have tried all sorts of mice, either a Logitech Trackman (my
preferred), or a wired USB mouse, nothing.

Even tried a USB/PS2 adapter and used a few different mice, still
nothing.

Title:
  Mouse speed/acceleration ignored in 17.04

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to 17.04 my mouse (a plain Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical
Mouse) is much slower and nothing I do changes its speed.

Tried through the settings GUI, using xset and using xinput. Nothing
seems to do anything. The only thing that offers some feedback is
xinput, that complaints about a value out of range:

  $ xinput --set-prop 8 289 2
X Error of failed request: BadValue (integer parameter out of range for
operation)
Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XInputExtension)
Minor opcode of failed request: 57 ()
Value in failed request: 0x121
Serial number of failed request: 19
Current serial number in output stream: 20
where 8 is the device id, 289 is the "libinput Accel Speed", and 2 is the
desired multiplier:

  $ xinput --list --short
  ⎡ Virtual core pointerid=2[master pointer (3)]
⎜ ↳ Virtual core XTEST pointer id=4[slave pointer
 (2)]
  ⎜ ↳ Logitech USB-PS/2 Optical Mouse id=8[slave pointer
 (2)]
  ⎣ Virtual core keyboard id=3[master keyboard (2)]
↳ Virtual core XTEST keyboard id=5[slave
keyboard (3)]
  ↳ Power Buttonid=6[slave
keyboard (3)]
  ↳ Power Buttonid=7[slave
keyboard (3)]
↳ Media Center Ed. eHome Infrared Remote Transceiver (185b:3020) id=9
[slave keyboard (3)]
↳ LITEON Technology USB Multimedia Keyboard id=10 [slave
keyboard (3)]
  ↳ Nuvoton w836x7hg Infrared Remote Transceiverid=11 [slave
keyboard (3)]

Basically I can set that value in the range 0..1, with no effect
(although it is reported correctly by xinput --list-props), or outside
and getting the error. Likewise, changing values with xset shows them
as changed, but the mouse is oblivious to it.

Finally, I tried in a live USB and at least via the settings GUI there's no
noticeable difference between either extreme setting of the slider.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-02-20 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Let me break it down for you, the BIOS is NOT out of date in regards to
any of the Intel video BIOS portions. Version 2.27 has the same Intel
video BIOS extension that 2.29 contains. It is foolish to update BIOS's
just because you can, generally you do them because something is broken,
but in this case, the broken portion is NOT because of the BIOS at all.
If the devs over there at Canonical had a brain on their head, you could
have easily determined this by grabbing any of your same CPU/GPU type
laptops and ran 16.04 with Chrome. In fact, many people have already
explained this countless times only to have had their time wasted.

Fact is, Xorg people already now know about the bug, and know it is a
fault with Xorg, but sadly, they have not fully found the issue as to
why. So this bug report is a bust. My time was in fact wasted, and yes
I will call out and accuse those who make people go through hoops that
will not resolve it. You are the dev, correct?

So once again, the portion of the BIOS that needs to be update, IS
already up to date, none of the other fixes are related to this, and
being Xorg already knows that a BIOS update won't resolve it, I refuse
to update my BIOS for no reason other than your explained reason which
IS the invalid step to pursue.

This bug IS a personal matter because the flickering almost gave my
epileptic friend a seizure, and you bet I won't have my time wasted. It
took almost 10 days to get a response from you, it's taken MANY others
months to get any response. This issue was not a problem before 16.04,
and so far since being on 16.10, it's gone away again. It IS a 16.04
problem, and for an LTS release, you WILL fix the problem, either be it
by backporting the Xorg drivers, or anything you need to do.

I am done with this bug report, go fix it yourself. I already fixed it
because my workaround IS valid. And for my one last remaining same
laptop on 16.04, it has permanently fixed the issue, and works faster
with higher framerates in GL games.

PS: I am a long time Linux user, for 17 years in fact. This isn't my
first go at getting things fixed, but I'll be damned if I sit here and
have a dev who IS wasting my time, and not familiar with the Xorg bug
reports on this same matter.

Goodbye, I'm done here. I'll setup my own PPA to fix this issue.

2017-02-12 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I am not trying out testing versions, I'm sorry, but you guys have
wasted a lot of our time, you and the Xorg team. It's a joke really.
You added the tag "bios-outdated" there's nothing outdated about my BIOS
so I don't know where you think that's an appropriate tag.

I'm sorry but testing zesty on a production computer is not an
acceptable thing to do, if non of your devs have an i7 Haswell or higher
with this issue, you simply aren't trying hard enough to find it. I
already explained what the fix is, and if Zesty doesn't have it, I'm not
wasting time. These machines for work are to stay on LTS, so it is your
duty to fix it. Can't claim to have long-term-support, if your support
is literally like this.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1554099] Re: Changing what action for security updates unusable

2017-01-22 Thread Brandon MacEachern
This is a bug yet once again in the latest version of 16.04.1, that was
installed fresh back in November.

sudo rm /etc/apt/apt.conf.d/20auto-upgrades

does NOT work. I have to edit 10periodic and set everything to 0, but
once you set security updates to download and install automatically, it
once again goes dim on next launch of Software and Updates.

This is not fixed for me. I installed from 16.04.1 back in November,
and it's now doing this for me, so can this please be re-opened? Some
recommended removing 20auto-upgrades, but it didn't work either.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-01-20 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I can now officially confirm, that simply doing as you mentioned:

sudo nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf

Section "Device"
   Identifier "Intel Graphics"
   Driver "intel"
   Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
   Option "TearFree""true"
   Option "DRI""3"
EndSection

Has FIXED the issue entirely. I feel that this change should be made
permanent in 16.04 LTS to fix any Intel issues regarding sandy-bridge
GPU's or higher.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1657875] Re: Google Chrome flickers badly on web pages

2017-01-19 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I have been trying a few of the recommended changes, and so far, Force
rasterization on all layers didn't work. It was less of an issue but
not completely gone.

I have now moved on to the one you mentioned, using sna and dri 3.0. I
thought these were default options though? Either way I forced it, and
so far so good for now. (And the pull down menu glitch as mentioned in
the other bug report, seems to have disappeared also).

Title:
Major screen flickering in Chromium and Google Chrome

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
On a fresh installation of Ubuntu 16.04 I noticed major screen
flickering issues in Chromium and Google Chrome browsers. Since this
never happened in Ubuntu 15.10 with exactly the same Google Chrome
binary, I believe, bug is caused by something that was added/updated
in 16.04. I came across some discussions where different people
suggested that it is related to new X.Org version.

Here's a video to show what is happening:
  https://youtu.be/l21WsKz3fZc?t=45s

I could fix this flickering with --disable-gpu-compositing switch, but
this slows down page drawing significantly so it can't be considered a
workaround. There is also a Chromium bug report:
  https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=606152, but I
don't think they will fix an Ubuntu-specific bug.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1334329] Re: Sound input settings not saved

2016-03-10 Thread Brandon MacEachern
You can't exactly unplug and plug in onboard sound. Especially one with
multiple inputs. It's purely a bug with Ubuntu preferences. In gnome it
works just fine.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1351641] Re: Launcher icon title does not disappear automatically

2015-07-22 Thread Brandon MacEachern
15.04, this is STILL an issue.

Is no one working on this? I guess Since Unity 8 will be out soon, we
might as well just give up fixing bugs on current stuff?

Title:
Launcher icon title does not disappear automatically

Status in Unity:
  Confirmed
Status in unity package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When you hover over an icon in the launcher bar with the cursor, a
text field with the title of the application pops up. Usually this
disappears as soon as you move the cursor away from the icon. However,
it occasionally happens that the title does not disappear, and stays
on screen even though the launcher bar is hidden again (I have auto-
hide turned on). If that happens, you can get the title to disappear
as it should by hovering the mouse over the same icon again and then
  moving it away.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1359248] Re: Sound settings no longer works with Gnome Control Center Sound in Xfce

This is affecting me, in that even adding XFCE, or removing the line
OnlyShowIn, still doesn't help. Not sure why.

Status in “indicator-sound” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 12.04 I was able to install Gnome Control Center and
indicator-sound and launch GNOME Control Center's audio options from
the Sound Settings option in Indicator-Sound, but after upgrading to
14.04 this is no longer possible - it loads GNOME-Control-Center
showing only one or two icons, the only workaround being to manually
launch gksu gnome-control-center sound which is less than ideal.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389300] [NEW] Display frozen during sleep

2014-11-04 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Public bug reported:

When the computer goes to sleep, it freezes to a black screen with a
single text cursor frozen (not blinking.). If I try to go to TTY1, it
goes there, but upon entering my user name, it freezes and doesn't do
anything. This happened since I got a mysterious Ubuntu 14.10 update.
(It didn't ask me if I wanted to update, it just popped up saying I
needed to reboot my computer, and I couldn't find any records as to what
update it actually was).

I have tried both Xubuntu (what I'm using now) and regular Ubuntu, both
are doing the same thing.

Sleep mode used to work just fine since 13.10, now it's broken. This is
a laptop and needs sleep mode to work, as I can't sit there waiting for
the machine to boot every time.

Ok I found the mysterious update, it's systemd-shim. So this may not be
an Xorg issue.

Since systemd-shim was updated, my laptop is now unable to properly

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389306] Re: Sleep mode frozen

2014-11-04 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Apparently if I wait long enough the computer WILL regain the ability to
wake, but networking is completely broken. And I was able to get some
logs out of it. Here's an attachment. Someone please assist, I lost
time at work today because my computer needs to be sleeping during
breaks and lunch, and it did cause me to loose time. It's affecting my
pay now, so this MUST be fixed.

  Sleep mode frozen

Status in “systemd-shim” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Since systemd-shim was updated, my laptop is now unable to properly
sleep, or wake from sleep. It keeps going to a frozen black screen
with a TTY style text cursor just frozen (not blinking). Going to
TTY1 lets me type in my username with a frozen non blinking cursor,
but the password prompt never appears.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1334329] Re: Sound input settings not saved

2014-10-29 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Now this is affecting my desktop with Ubuntu 14.04.

This software sucks, I'm sorry. It's crap, I'm switching distro's at
this point. It's only affecting Ubuntu. ONLY. And if no one is
willing to fix this problem, screw it.

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1334329] Re: Sound input settings not saved

2014-10-12 Thread Brandon MacEachern
No, I am using the built in mic on this computer. Also, it's not using
a Cirrus Logic sound chip, it's using all Intel. So, this patch you are
linking me to is not likely to work or will make things worse.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1334329] Re: Sound input settings not saved

2014-10-11 Thread Brandon MacEachern
Once again, I do not understand any of this. You're asking me to do
this but I am just a casual user who wrote this bug report because me,
like others, are experiencing this only on Ubuntu.

If you can ELI5 (explain like I'm 5), I might be able to do something.
Otherwise if not, I give up and will abandon all hope here. Linux
should not require a user to be basically a programmer to fix something
stupid like a built in microphone on my computer.

input, causes the default SPDIF to be selected again, and not the
internal microphone I preferred. I made a video to demonstrate what I
  mean by this here: http://youtu.be/9Q9EQvLl_rA

  1) The release of Ubuntu you are using, via 'lsb_release -rd' or System -
About Ubuntu
  14.04

  2) The version of the package you are using, via 'apt-cache policy pkgname'
or by checking in Software Center
I really don't know. It's just the sound preferences.

  3) What you expected to happen
For my selected sound input to be saved.

  4) What happened instead
Keeps defaulting to the top sound input

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1351641] Re: Launcher icon title does not disappear automatically

2014-08-02 Thread Brandon MacEachern
I can confirm this happens to me as well, on every Ubuntu 14.04 machine
I've encountered so far actually.

Title:
Launcher icon title does not disappear automatically

Status in “unity” package in Ubuntu:
