[Touch-packages] [Bug 1929209] [NEW] external monitor goes black for several seconds at a time, randomly

2021-05-21 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

At times it is completely debilitating; at other times it does not happen for
hours.
The physical connections are clean and solid.

There are other related behaviours reported in the past, but I am running
Ubuntu 20.10.
I guess the attachments will show that I'm using Intel graphics hardware. The
monitor is a very popular Samsung one.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1876211] [NEW] Bluetooth connection to headset works for volume buttons but not tests

2020-04-30 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh

[Touch-packages] [Bug 463796] Re: Alsa doesn't detect external mic

2020-01-22 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Fix was apparently released, yet for me the problem arose first when I upgraded
to 19.10.
I now have no access to the microphone on my headset.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1858439] Re: When docked, laptop switches to HDMI/Display port, instead of headphones. Headset microphone not available. [20BXCTO1WW, Realtek ALC3232]

2020-01-21 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is not just a problem when I dock. In fact, even when I correct the
problem by selecting the correct output device in sound settings, it
reverts after a while back to the incorrect one (HDMI/Display port)

Bug description:

When my laptop is docked, I used to use a headset plugged into the dock for
meetings. Both microphone and audio out were connected to my headset.

Since the last update, my sound does not work like it used it, and I
cannot make it work like I want.

  In particular, whenever I dock:

   - the output device changes to "HDMI/DisplayPort 2 - Built-in Audio". I do
not know what that is (nothing is connected to HDMI), but it results in strange
audio behaviour in which I can hear something through headphones but it's faint
and does not respond to volume control.
   - audio input switches to internal microphone. Worse, there is no longer
the choice to use the headset microphone, which is mandatory for those in my
meeting not to hear my keyboard taps.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1858439] [NEW] When docked, laptop switches to HDMI/Display port, instead of headphones. Headset microphone not available. [20BXCTO1WW, Realtek ALC3232]

2020-01-06 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

When my laptop is docked, I used to use a headset plugged into the dock for
meetings. Both microphone and audio out were connected to my headset.

Since the last update, my sound does not work like it used it, and I
cannot make it work like I want.

In particular, whenever I dock:

 - the output device changes to "HDMI/DisplayPort 2 - Built-in Audio". I do
not know what that is (nothing is connected to HDMI), but it results in strange
audio behaviour in which I can hear something through headphones but it's faint
and does not respond to volume control.
 - audio input switches to internal microphone. Worse, there is no longer the
choice to use the headset microphone, which is mandatory for those in my
meeting not to hear my keyboard taps.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-11-05 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Actually, it is not true that this is solved under 19.10. All that has
happened is that the latency has shortened to 1-2 seconds. It is *still*
the case that during that time, I cannot get the focus in any other
window or do anything else in the operating system.

Bug description:
Since less than a month ago, using the print page dialog (which for me
defaults to saving as PDF) is outlandishly slow. Once opened, if I try
to close it (click cancel / press Esc) or to use it (click Save or
press Enter), there is no visible response, and my system hangs for 10
seconds. After that though, the operation concludes successfully and
  things return to normal.

This did not used to happen. Closing or submitting the print-to-PDF
used to result in the pop-up window closing immediately and the
  browser regaining responsiveness.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-10-31 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Yes, I have now very grudgingly upgraded to 19.10 and the problem seems
to be resolved.

This problem was new at some point in 19.04 (ie did not exist at first
with 19.04) and I do not think pressuring eople to upgrade (so soon
after a release) is a good solution.

On the other hand, strangely, no one else has reported the bug.

Thanks, Olivier!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1833114] Re: print page dialog latency when trying to cancel or to save

2019-10-19 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This problem does not affect a brand new user if I create one. So it is
maybe to do with having upgraded, and having old settings? How do I
reset the relevant settings?

press Enter), there is no visible response, and my system hangs for 10
seconds. After that though, the operation concludes successfully and
  things return to normal.

This did not used to happen. Closing or submitting the print-to-PDF
used to result in the pop-up window closing immediately and the
  browser regaining responsiveness.

** Description changed:

Whenever I use an extended desktop with my large monitor above my laptop
screen, there is corruption and frequent flash-to-black of the large
monitor. It seems to occur especially when a terminal window changes
- output/scrolls up / etc.
+ output/scrolls up / etc.'

+ In addition, there is much more exterme corruption when I press super-S (or
whatever) to see my four desktops, and I move a window around.

Resolution options for external display/monitor are incomplete

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Usually when I plug in an external monitor (when awake, or before
waking from suspend), my external display is rendered with 1024x768
resolution, and this is the highest resolution displayed by xrandr:

  DP-2 connected 1024x768+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm
x 0mm
 1024x768 60.00*
 800x600 60.3256.25
 848x480 60.00
 640x480 59.94

But in fact if I reboot I get the full set of options back (1680x) for that
monitor.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1678498] [NEW] Resolution options for external monitor are incomplete

2017-04-01 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

Usually when I plug in an external monitor (when awake, or before waking
from suspend), my external display is rendered with 1024x768 resolution,
and this is the highest resolution displayed by xrandr:

DP-2 connected 1024x768+1920+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 0mm x
0mm
   1024x768 60.00*
   800x600 60.3256.25
   848x480 60.00
   640x480 59.94

But in fact if I reboot I get the full set of options back (1680x) for that
monitor.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1658497] Re: External screen flashes to black for ~1 s periodically under extended desktop

2017-01-23 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This may be the same as
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1634449
It can reliably be triggered by just crossing the cursor back and forth between
screens, but it does not only occur then; often it is a keypress in window
(terminal, etc) which triggers it, even when the cursor was already there.

** Summary changed:

- Screens all flash to black for ~1 s periodically under extended desktop
+ External screen flashes to black for ~1 s periodically under extended desktop

(sorry.. continued:) For instance, it happens quite often exactly as a
close a terminal with Ctrl-D in the external monitor!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1658497] Re: Screens all flash to black for ~1 s periodically under extended desktop

2017-01-22 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This sounds crazy, but this seems to happen much more frequently when I
have, or am interacting with, a terminal or emacs in the second/external
screen. The resolution of the display is huge, so these windows tend to
be a small fraction of the display.

Also, I think it's actually only the external screen which is going black.
However, it started very clearly right when I upgraded.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1581491] Re: palm detection absent: Mouse pointer jumps around when I am typing

2016-06-26 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1351772 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1351772

Can this really be the same problem as this 2-year-old one?!:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/unity-settings-
daemon/+bug/1351772

Since then / on my machine, the "disable while typing" option has been
removed from settings, yet this problem strangely is left

** This bug has been marked a duplicate of bug 1351772
"disable touchpad while typing" doesn't work

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1509846] Re: lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

2016-01-27 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This stream of comments is difficult to follow. If one of the most
knowledgeable people could summarize where we are, it might be useful.
I am experiencing this problem also, on a Lenovo X230 under Ubuntu
15.10, since a month or so ago.

"sudo apt-get dist-upgrade" certainly is not a solution for me (indeed,
you might say that's what started the problem!), and I don't actually
think Christopher M. Penalver was suggesting that as a fix.

This is certainly a "critical" problem, and most frustrating a
development for what was a stable machine.

As I understand it: it will still be useful if I do a "ubuntu-bug xorg"
after the next time it crashes, and after logging back in? (or from a
tty login, before logging back in?). I have xdiagnose installed.

Title:
lightdm crashes on window open in Ubuntu 15.10 intel

Status in Light Display Manager:
  Confirmed
Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Symptom: xorg crashes on windows creation

How to reproduce: No 100% reproducibility, however intensively using
2D/3D acceleration triggers the bug (e.g. by opening several new
windows and/or menus in a Unity desktop environment)

Affected hardware: Intel HD Graphics 4400/5000 etc
  Affected software:
  - kernel 4.2.0-16-generic #19-Ubuntu SMP Thu Oct 8 15:35:06 UTC 2015 x86_64
  - Ubuntu 15.10 with Unity (because of compiz 2D/3D acceleration)
  - any other software using direct rendering (e.g. VLC)

  Workaround:
  - Disable window animations in Compiz reduces the frequency of the crashes.
Use compizconfig-settings-manager for this tweak (sudo apt-get install
compizconfig-settings-manager)

  [original description below]

I get crashes, when I open a new window in an already started
application. It happens irregularely, but I can force the crash if I
open several new message windows in thunderbird. But it also happens
in other applilcations, for example a new terminal window.

This is the output during the crash in /var/log/Xorg.0.log

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1466157] Re: Unknown directive BrowsePoll in /etc/cups/cupsd.conf

And now, late June, after more updates??! Printing through browsepoll is
back, once again.
(I would like to avoid the flakey changes and regressions in my printing, in
favour of stability.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1453440] Re: Rsync -z fails under 15.04 with rsync: on remote machine: --new-compress: unknown option

2015-05-09 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This is satisfactorily documented in the man page.
The solution, I guess, is to use --old-compress rather than -z, or wait for my
other hosts to get with the latest swank.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1300462] Re: Login timed out after waking from suspend

2015-04-20 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
... to follow up: in fact, it has not resolved itself in the 15.04
release. Often, things work better in that as soon as the machine waits
up, it is waiting for a fingerprint scan. However, the rest of the time,
it hangs for a tens of seconds with the authentication has timed out
error message, and then solicits a password, and only then (after
something incorrect has been entered) solicits a fingerprint reading.

Title:
Login timed out after waking from suspend

Status in fprintd:
  Won't Fix
Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I'm using fprint package for finger-print authentication.

Half the time when my laptop recovers from suspend, I am able to enter a
password (or, after pressing Enter, a finger print instead).
But half the time when it recovers from suspend, the lightdm (?) login
screen instead says that authentication has timed out. For some reason I then
have to wait a good 25 seconds before I get another chance. At that point, I
am able to enter a password or fingerprint as normal.

This time out should not be triggered during/after a suspend.
Also, if there is a time out for some reason, it should just wait the normal
2 seconds required after entering an incorrect password.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1300462] Re: Login timed out after waking from suspend

2015-04-09 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
I believe this problem may have resolved itself, just recently, with
15.04 updates. It used to occur most of the time, and very recently it
hasn't at all.

This problem exists still in 15.04. If this is a lightdm problem, what
should be done next?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1388887] Re: two cursors instead of one

2014-12-02 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1376760 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1376760

Let me reiterate, since this has just been marked as a duplicate: I experience
this when the screen has NOT just been rotated or un-rotated.
(However, I've not looked at the patch to understand whether it will cover
broader circumstances.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1388887] Re: two cursors instead of one

2014-11-25 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
This bug definitely occurs when I have not just rotated or un-rotated a
screen. That is, the cursor can be fine, and then it suddenly changes to
two cursors when some new window pops up or something (not sure what).

However, I am using an external monitor which is rotated, at the time.

I do use external screen rotation when I'm docked.
I hadn't noticed a simple association, but that might be at least one trigger
for the problem.

Also, trying these steps from the other bug:

xrandr --output LVDS1 --rotate left

# do something, click a few buttons...

xrandr --output LVDS1 --rotate normal

did cause a double cursor for me just now.

So this is likely it. Does that mean we can easily get a fix in 14.10?

This is happening a lot of the time. Since screen captures don't
capture it, I took a photo. This is what my cursor looks like!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1382826] [NEW] During fresh install of 14.10 with existing /home partition, user is no longer able to graphical log in

2014-10-18 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

I installed 14.10 yesterday on a formatted partition next to a 13.04
system partition and a /home partition.

When prompted for a username, etc, I entered the same user info as existed
already in /home.
Because it was the first user in both cases, the uid matched.

(Gripe: unlike Linux more than 10 years ago, it did not offer to import
existing users from the existing installation).

When I booted up in 14.10, logging in through the GUI just bumped me
back to the gdm login screen after a few seconds of blank screen.
Logging in through a terminal worked fine.

I then tried 13.04 and had the same problem! That is, 14.10 install had
actually corrupted my user account on /home so that I could no longer
startx !

I eventually noticed that some files (I think ~/.dmrc and some
~/.Xauthority.*) had ownership root:root.

Thus, a workaround ended up being a
sudo chmod -R myuser:myuser /home/myuser
~on my home folder.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1375505] [NEW] Screen locked into dimmed mode after sleep; brightness controls do nothing (Recent regression)

2014-09-29 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

After an update in the last week (and I have updated frequently, so it's
new), my laptop is *sometimes* coming out of sleep from closing the lid
with a fully-dimmed screen when it is waiting for me to reauthenticate
to unlock the system.

The brightness control keys, which normally work, do nothing.

A workaround is to click on Switch user, whereupon it comes back with
full brightness.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1371704] [NEW] flickering stripes/dashes screen corruption following recent update in 14.04

2014-09-19 Thread Christopher Barrington-Leigh
Public bug reported:

After a regular update of my LTS during the last week, the screen has
started showing corruption. For instance, when I maximise a window, the
screen flickers for up to a second with an overlay of black dashes and
stripes, sometimes in a chevron pattern or just horizontal black dashes
covering the whole screen, especially on an external display.

It does not show up in a screen capture.
