Here's another symptom, though it may well be unrelated. This bug affects my work computer, on which I have ubuntu 14.04 LTS, 64-bit. On that computer, when I use the workaround, i.e., quit software updater and start it, a window appears for it and I can use it to update. But the window can't be resized. The mouse pointer doesn't even change when I pass it over the window's border.

Similarly if I do Super-S or Super-W it doesn't show up anywhere. Even if I alt-tab to the application nothing shows up. This happens only when update manager runs on its own. If I kill it and then launch it myself it comes to the foreground just fine.
