I seeing the same as rjb, when I do the "service network-manager restart" once, I see the WiFi icon return and see nearby WiFi networks as well, however I have some VPNs set up and they don't reappear in network manager. I have to go to System Settings -> Network and turn them on there and then

I have an X1 Carbon Gen1 with Intel Centrino Advanced-N 6205 [Taylor Peak] (rev 96). 'sudo iw dev wlan0 scan' doesn't help. I usually have a blank wireless icon (no bars) with no networks listed, occasionally the up-down arrow wired connector icon. Need to go to System Settings > Network to see
