See the attached screenshot showing the result seen browing
  https://www.google.com/fonts#UsePlace:use/Collection:Ubuntu

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 15.10
  Package: ttf-ubuntu-font-family 0.83-0ubuntu1
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.2.0-17.21-generic 4.2.3
  Uname: Linux 4.2.0-17-generic x86_64

  PackageArchitecture: all
  SourcePackage: ubuntu-font-family-sources
UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to wily on 2015-10-31 (0 days ago)

IMPACT: Ubuntu Light font renders incorrectly for all 15.10 users
which impacts the usability and visual design.

The new version of font package (0.831) corrects the relationship
between Light and Medium weight to follow the commonly used naming
  standards:

  Ubuntu Light Light Light Italic
  UbuntuRegular Italic BoldBold Italic
  Ubuntu Medium Medium Medium Italic
  Ubuntu Condensed Regular
Ubuntu Mono Regular Italic BoldBold Italic

TEST CASE: in 15.10, go to
  https://www.google.com/fonts#UsePlace:use/Collection:Ubuntu

If the Light weight renders heavier than Normal weight, the bug is in
  place

  REGRESSION POTENTIAL

0.831 was tested by manually running in 15.10 and no regression was
noticed, while the bug was fixed. The potential for regression is
  small.

Touchscreen interactions should take priority over mouse and disable
  it

Status in Canonical System Image:

Status in Ubuntu UX:

Status in qtbase-opensource-src package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
It is possible, at the moment (r199, krillin, rc-proposed), to use
both touch and mouse at the same time.

  Because of:
  - QtQuick's touch-to-mouse events synthesis feature;
  - the fact that most of QML code in this world relies on MouseArea to handle
input (touch as well);
  - the fact that there is no QML component that handles both Touch and Mouse
events and gives the developer a good API to handle both;
  - the fact that making both touch and mouse usable at the same time easily
leads to unexpected and broken UX;

I suggest we make it so that only one input device can be used at any given
time by default (exceptional cases to be handled separately).
Moreover, I think it would be a good idea to give touch events a priority
over mouse events, i.e. mouse stops working when the user touches the screen,
but not viceversa.

I also think the final decision should take into account the conventions the
users are already accustomed to.
I played with a laptop that features touchscreen (Microsoft's Surface) and
Win10, and here's what I found:

  - in the default browser: interacting with the touch stops and hides
the mouse, and gives priority to (multi)-touch gestures. The mouse
pointer stays still (i.e. doesn't follow the fingers). The only way I
found that let me take control of the mouse again was to perform a
single tap and then wait a short amount of time before moving the
  mouse.

  - in other apps that did not feature special touch handling,
interacting with the touch would still disable the mouse, but in this
case the mouse pointer followed my finger (I guess this is a "if
nothing consumes touch events -> then do mouse simulation")

I believe this bug is a show stopper for the convergent experience.

It is currently possible to trigger flickering and broken UX in
multiple places in Unity8. Basically anything that relies on MouseMove
events is broken and causes flickering.

  A few examples:
  - username vertical scrolling in the login manager (just drag the username
with your finger and then move the mouse).
  - window positioning (same as above)
  - indicators horizontal scrolling
  - scrolling in ANY Flickable/ListView based views inside applications and
platform menus
  - side scrolling in the Dash
  - etc, etc etc...

NOTE: after a discussion on IRC with Saviq, we agreed that it would be
awesome if MouseArea would be able to handle different input devices.
I already researched this before writing this post, and I didn't see
any way how MouseArea could (with the current APIs) be able to do
that. That means, imho, a looong waiting time before we actually
implement such a feature in Qt itself. Hence I proposed the solution
above as a workaround, while we get all the rest of the pieces working
  as we expect.

  a) slight through (1->2->3->4->5->6) which takes 5 actions, and is pretty
time consuming, since some scopes load slow
  b) use the bottom up gesture and look for the scope wanted and click on it.
This is much faster and takes only two actions.

However the dots, lead the average user to take option a) because the
dots indicate a left to right movement to switch scopes. Also by using
the b) option, the dots do not make much sense (because it doesn't
matter whether you are at the third or fifth place in the favorite
  list)

  Suggested Behavior

The dots should be clickable as shortlinks to each favorite scope.

  This would:
  1. Speed up the process of switching, may be even in the case that one has to
tap twice in order to get the right dot. (may be the margin between the dots
could even be a bit bigger)
  2. Give the dots an acutal function/meaning (despite to (mis)lead to
inefficient left right swipes)

Bug description:
The system image ships with certain scopes that cannot be hidden, for
example Amazon. While it is possible to not ever launch this scope or
favourite it, thus making it visible only in the scope switcher - a
user should be able to remove or at least hide it completely from the
  UI (=the scope switcher).

Possible suggestion for a fix: enable the "swipe to reveal extra actions" in
the scope switcher and show a "hide" button there. In settings, expose a
"hidden built-in scopes" where user can re-enable these system shipped remote
scopes.
Other possible suggestion (even better) - package the remote scopes so user
can remove them normally.

Title:
Switching between more than two keyboards unnecessarily difficult

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in Ubuntu UX:
  Triaged
Status in ubuntu-keyboard package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I have three keyboards installed - "English", "Chinese - Pinyin" and
"Emoji". Three might be considered a lot except that emoji is on a
separate keyboard and everyone needs emoji, so this would affect any
  bilingual user.

Simply tapping the globe icon on the keyboard will never allow you to
select all three, it just toggles between the last two used. You have
to long press, then locate the keyboard entry you want, then tap it.

The irritating thing is that I usually switch between English and
Chinese, so a single tap mostly works. Unless I inserted an emoji, in
which case it switches to that instead. So switching to Chinese often
  involves:

  * tap globe icon
  * notice it's wrong
  * long press globe icon
  * select Chinese

But then, I want to re-establish English as my next favourite option,
  so before I actually type:

  * long press globe icon
  * select English
  * tap globe icon (to switch back to Chinese)

...and now I can type my Chinese, if I can even remember what I wanted
to say after all of that.

Most other keyboards just cycle through all the keyboards, and that's
what a single tap should do here.

I can imagine a better, if complicated system. Imagine if instead of
a menu, long pressing brought up a constellation surrounding the globe
button. Say my keyboards are English, German, Chinese and Emoji:

   DE ZH
     \ /
   EN --- o --- Em

Once I'd learned the layout, I could switch to any layout I want by
swiping from the globe in the appropriate direction.

Does it make sense for Unity to go into Windowed (aka Desktop) mode on
such a small screen as the Nexus 4?

It does make sense of course to show a mouse pointer and not display a

My proposal: Maybe below (or instead of it) that blue circle/rectangle with
cursor (in words.png attachment), there should be magnifier button. And when we
hit and hold it, it should work similar to that in TexStudio (please see
attachments 'without zoom.png' and 'with zoom.png'). It should zoom some round

improve selecting exact character that we want to.

Using the ota8 candidate on a bq device, going to settings and using
the "reset" item doesn't ask for any confirmation and doesn't give any
feedback the action is done. Since it's a simple element in a list and
easy to hit it would be nice to at least ask for a confirmation (there
are not a lot of settings at the moment, but would only be retyping
its start page is some work)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1513435] Re: [online-accounts] No edit UI

2015-11-18 Thread Magdalena Mirowicz
** Description changed:

Currently there is no way to edit an accounts credentials and other
settings stored in an online account.

This is needed for apps like Dekko that will store a lot of editable
details such as server addresses, port numbers etc. These should be
easily editable after account creation and not have to delete and re-
create an account just to adjust one value.

As an example, a server or corporate policy might be in place that you
have to change your password every 90 days. This will be inconvenient to
the user to have to re-create the account and also lose any additional
(possibly critical) data stored in an app that is bound to that account.
+
+ --
+
+ Questions to Design team:
+ 1) is it OK to let account providers add more content to that page?
+ 2) if yes, where should this content appear?

It does seem on first use you would want to show some number of pages
even if they are only viewed once, but once the user establishes which
pages they view multiple times those should allow us to ignore single
visits. Firefox doesn't start to show "tiles" for most visited sites
  for 30 days acc to
  https://blog.mozilla.org/advancingcontent/2014/02/13/more-details-on-

I was removing sites that did not have thumbnails , unfortunately I
thin this means they will ever again show up in the top sites. Not
sure if permanent removal is what is desired, I can see it either way.

Status in Ubuntu UX:

Bug description:
The Ubuntu browser has no way to use bookmarklets (a bookmarked
javascript: link which runs some code in the context of the currently
viewed page, rather than navigating to a new page). See
https://www.readability.com/bookmarklets for an example of such
bookmarklets and why they're useful. In short, bookmarklets are a
slightly clunky but open and available way for people to augment the
capabilities of a web browser without being blocked on the browser
  developers implementing a feature.

In order to use bookmarklets, it must be possible to:

  1. get a javascript: link into the browser's bookmarks database. Ideally this
would be doable with JS in a client page; a suboptimal but possible alternative
is the approach that iOS Safari takes, where one bookmarks a random URL and
then edits the bookmark to contain a (copy-and-pasted) JavaScript URL instead.
Neither are possible on Ubuntu's browser; bookmarks cannot be manually edited.
  2. Invoke the bookmark in the current tab. This is not possible in the Ubuntu
browser: one cannot open a bookmark in an existing tab, because the list of
bookmarks is only available in the new tab screen.

To indicate which SIM slot is active, the messaging-app changes the

colorblind people, this highlight makes no significant difference.
Studies estimate that this affects about 8% of the male population and
about 0.5% of the female population.

Could the visual change be made slightly more noticeable? Perhaps
only underline the active slot, or render the active slot in a bold
font, or maybe change the color to something with higher contrast
  compared to the inactive slot?

A screenshot is attached. The top row shows no SIM selected, while
the second row shows SIM 2 selected. To red-colorblind people, they
  look nearly identical.

  a. swipe up to reveal the camera controls
  b. tap the flash button
  c. tap the setting you want
  d. tap anywhere outside the settings to return to the controls
  e. tap anywhere outside the controls to return to the camera.

By this time, whatever you want to take a photo of has probably
  disappeared or gotten bored.

In comparison, toggling the flash in:
  * iOS Camera takes two taps
  * Windows Phone Camera takes either one or two taps, depending on which

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1463606] Re: [dialer-app] contacts view should remember state

[dialer-app] contacts view should remember state

Status in Canonical System Image:
  Confirmed
Status in Ubuntu UX:
  Triaged
Status in address-book-app package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in dialer-app package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Step to replay:

  - Open the phone app;
  - Do a tap to the contacts icon in the top right corner;
  - Do research and choose a contact with multiple phone numbers;
  - Do a tap on one of the numbers -> you return to the phone app and you are
ready to be a call;
  - There is no direct way to return to the previous contact card opened (for
example to change number if it is busy or to call alternative number) without
repeating the search again.

It would be useful to have a button to return to the phone app that
makes return to the open contact to call a different number (or send
  an SMS / e-mail)

  -- UX comment ---

  The solution is as follows:
  1. open dialer
  2. tap on the contacts in the top right corner in the header
  3. find a contact and tap it to go into the contact card
  4. tap a number to call
  5. view returns to the dialer with the pre-populated number
  6. do not tap call!
  7. now tap again the contacts icon in the top right corner in the header
  8. view should show you the previously opened contacts card

  Additional desired behaviours:
If user taps the back button in the contact card, screen goes back to list of
contacts.
If user initiated a call, then tapping the back button from the calling
screen goes back to the keypad (indicator bar turns green, to show user there
is an active call happening). A tap on the contacts icon in the top right
corner in the header from this view shows user the last opened contact card.

Please refer to this spec for the latest UX:

Right now the user doesn't have any way to find out on which Bluetooth
profiles he is connected. The only thing he knows from the settings
app or the bluetooth indicator is that he is connected in some way
  with a remote bluetooth device.

Android for example allows you to select for what you want to use a
known and auto connectable bluetooth device. For example it lists:

   * phone audio
   * media audio
   * contact sharing

where each of those points is an alias for one or more profiles (phone
  audio: HFP/HSP, media-audio: A2DP AVCTP .., contact-sharing: PBAP).

We should at minimum list the profiles the user is connected to at the
moment in the settings application on the device information page.

On a next level we could implement a allow/deny preference for a
  device or something similar.

appear when our device will be running out of space. In that time we figured
out that we've got some offline maps in local folder. But if we don't remember
where is it, we need to search it for a long while.
I think the best solution would be that one - while uninstalling procedure,
OS will ask if we want to delete configuration and all other local files from
~/.local/share/XYZ***
  What do you think guys?

The Bluetooth icon in the panel is currently an outline icon when
Bluetooth is turned on but nothing is connected, it will turn to the
filled icon when something connects. Additionally it would be useful
if the icon would turn blue when there is actual traffic happening.
This is something I've been used to from previous phones and it helps
greatly to identify the state of the connection. For instance, the
Music player playing music to a Bluetooth headset would be immediately
visible when you've put the headset away already and forgot to stop
  the music player.

Also, it causes bug reports of failed connections to be more detailed
as this gives details to the developer whether the connection failed
when establishing the ACL link or if something failed after a profile
  has been connected already.

no way to see the whole URL.

It's not common to allow this on a mobile browser. So maybe it's not
a critical feature or maybe you don't want to diverge in this respect
between desktop and mobile views. But it would be useful.

it takes 26 seconds to exchange the senders number with his name and
for more seconds to show the messages. This issue occurs since I
updated to OTA6 and it is really ridiculously slow.

Similar things happen when I open the messaging app directly, where it
takes really long to replace the numbers with the names from the
phonebook. Same with the recent calls.

The contacts app is normally "fast".

At some source I found something about deactivating the automatic bug
reporting to canonical - that didn't do anything.

The version is Ubuntu 15.04 (r25) on an BQ Aquarius 4.5.

Light grey text is very difficult to read even on a white background. In some
apps such as the Dekko for instance you cant read the text in the emails, such
as bug reports sent from Ubuntu. In settings > accounts , you cant read the
email address below each company such as Ubuntu one or Google. As Ubuntu Touch
is content based I would have though text contrast would be high on the list
but this is not the case.

Please see Dekko example attached (taken from MX4)

Also, If in the future users wish to change the white background to a
picture (or another colour) this will be a big problem . I have
manually changed the scope backgrounds to a light blue, lake /
mountain picture and the phone looks much more interesting, but text
is very dim for general reading.

To be honest I think the end user should have some control over text
size, colour, contrast, font etc as they do in the Unity desktop
  software.

Please can you consider my request.

a powerfull phone moving between scopes is still laggy and slow also some auto
refresh as you move to them.
I would like to suggest that auto refresh takes place in the background so
all scopes are ready when you flick through them.
Also I wonder if a scope selection system would be a good idea so you could
just direct to the scope you want and not have to scroll through many scopes
before reaching the one you wish to use.

Note, The Today scope is improving slowly and the time for each item
to show is reducing, but basically its still far too slow to be the
main scope. If you refresh say the BBC news scope it completes in a 2
seconds, the today scope still takes 10s (even after fixing the delay
to show calls and texts). I understand people are working very hard to
  improve this key area.

  Thanks for your support

[enhancement] Add non-linear animation progress (e.g. a sigmoid

The current linear animations for minimize/maximize look kind of

  on windowed mode vivid+o + silo0
when in an active call, set dialer app to the background to activate the
green banner (active call banner)
using BT connected mouse click on the banner or the indicators and nothing
happens

there is also a design question of what is to happen in this case with
the indicators? should a click reveal ? or should indicators be kept
to a non-green area when a monitor is connected? could get tricky
  quick

So the thing is to support this meta tag and change header colour accordingly. It would be a
great addition to Ubuntu and what's more, it is simple to implement.

What do you think about the idea?
Thank you very much for your opinions.

to improve the perception of the dash responding.
