[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-06-22 Thread Marco Ciampa
Ok just for clarify my point: I usually do bug reports not just for me but
hoping that my problems help someonelse solve him/hers. I am perfectly well
keeping the old kernel and frankly I do not think to have security problems in
this way. To sum up: I have no needs, but I am here if You want to debug this
issue to root cause it as you say rightly this is not done yet.
I do not want to make you lose your precious dev time (seriously) so if you
think that this is just a corner case with my singular hardware combination,
close this bug report and sorry for the waste of time. If you instead think
that this could help other spot similar problems, I can try all the kernels or
tests you throw me, in my spare time, of course...

And deep thanks for your efforts to help me.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

Title:
  The computer freeze randomly

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
The freeze problem actually started when I was using 12.04 LTS. Every
time when I was login to the desktop (after the computer is completely
shut down) , the screen glitches and freezes. However, when I restart
the computer, the problem went away. Everything is normal again. This
happened in every desktop environment that I have used (Gnome, Unity,
  Xfce).

The problem getting worst after few days where I need to restart the
computer twice (sometime 3 times) in order to make the system calm
  down.

So, I think it was the driver problem, and I changed the VGA driver to
its propriety Nvidia driver, but no avail. In fact, it getting worst.

Then, I thought maybe the system not stable, so I upgrade the system
to 14.04. But the problem still persist. Again, I installed the Nvdia
driver again, it seem to work but eventually it also no avail. The
problem seem more serious under Nvdia driver.

And I revert back to the opensource driver. It works, but only in xfce
environment. It also freeze if I using other environment. It's okay
for me to use xfce, but the thing is when I try to play the Nibbles
(which I think it is preinstalled in 14.04), not long I played, it
  freeze again.

I also thought this might be the hardware problem, maybe it is the
onboard vga card got something wrong with it. After All, I have been
using this computer for 5 years. But, when i using Window 7 (using
dual boot), it's never be the problem. Everything is working fine in
Window 7. So, the hardware issue, ruled out.

  Hope you can help.

  Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-06-21 Thread Marco Ciampa
Having al least had occasion to test the PC with 15.04, that kernel
(3.19) ... it seems to work!

Dmesg report a series of bugs like this (of the top of my head):

noveau E[PBUS] [...] MMIO write of 0x0101 FAULT at 0x000

repeated perhaps 10 times...

Hope this helps...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-06-21 Thread Marco Ciampa
Sorry I do not understand your question.
I have resolved keeping the old 12.04 kernel when updating to 14.04.
Thanks to [...] that update program keeps the old kernel. If I tried a new
install of 14.04 on that hardware it would result a mission impossible. I am
afraid it could not be the only hardware affected of that bug.
Since 14.04 is a stable release I thought that it could have been
appreciated to know that 14.04 is uninstallable on some machines. The good news
is that it is still usable with a new install of a 15.04.
I really do not understand why a vivid (15.04) kernel backported on a 14.04
still hangs the machine but a live not...???

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-06-21 Thread Marco Ciampa
Thanks for the advise but according to this:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Releases and if I understand correctly the end
of life of 12.04 LTS is far from expired.

Anyway a backport is really the solution since if someone want to
install a 14.04 from scratch instead of upgrading from a 12.04 he/she
apparently have no other choice...

Thanks for your support!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-05-30 Thread Marco Ciampa
Perhaps there is a misunderstand here: the PC was already updated to the
last available BIOS version. If there is a but in the BIOS, than that
bug is not going away. BTW I have a friend of mine with a laptop with
AMD CPU and more or less the same NVidia card that had similar problems
resolved in the same manner: installing the 12.04 generic kernel.

When (if I can) put my hands on that laptop I'll send a complete but
report for that too.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

2015-05-29 Thread Marco Ciampa
I re-read my message, sorry for being rude.

So your suggestion is to leave this bug report to the (missing?)
willingness of his author and continue with my report?

2015-05-29 Thread Marco Ciampa
Sorry I missed this:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette
...Instead, if you are the original reporter, ensuring the report has
all the requested testing information performed would be the fastest way
to ensure your bug is resolved as soon as possible. If you are not the
original reporter, it's best to file a new report, so that necessary
debugging attachments are reviewed. It is a common misconception that
filing a potential duplicate report is wasteful. Filing a new report is
quite helpful, and is preferred to ease triaging. Thanks for your
patience...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1456184] Re: NVidia VGA freeze with new kernels

2015-05-29 Thread Marco Ciampa
I know that the BIOS is updated to last version available: 1804.

I actually am writing from my laptop and that is a desktop PC.

As soon as I reach that PC I'll do what I was asked to do and I will
post the results...

Thanks for your patience.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

2015-05-28 Thread Marco Ciampa
Please if you set a bug as incomplete, ask for what it needs to fill in
the gaps of information... what is missing from this bug report I
wonder...

  Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

2015-05-18 Thread Marco Ciampa
I do not know how to do it. I mean: when the computer freezes it is
impossible to file any bug report. And I think that filing a bug report
for a working (with the old kernel) system is useless...

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

2015-05-18 Thread Marco Ciampa
this workaround works: http://askubuntu.com/questions/588538/whats-the-
correct-driver-to-use-with-a-geforce-6150se-nforce-430-on-lubuntu-14

but IMHO it is not acceptable for two reasons:

1) it is an all proprietary solution
2) it works bad (noveau under kernel 3.2.0 worked better)

Title:
  The computer freeze randomly

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

  Thanks

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1389732] Re: The computer freeze randomly

2015-05-16 Thread Marco Ciampa
Please re-open this bug.
I own the same motherboard: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/M2N68AM_PLUS/ with
last bios version 1804.
I recently upgraded from 12.04 to 14.04. 12.04 was working flawlessly. Luckily
I retained the old 3.2.0-83-generic-64 kernel from 12.04. It seems that it is a
kernel related bug since both 3.13 and 3.16 kernel freeze the screen a few
seconds after the boot.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1328774] Re: devede, wrong avconv/ffmpeg option -newaudio

2014-08-16 Thread Marco Ciampa
Quick hack:

edit

 devede_avconv_convert.py

and

 devede_ffmpeg_convert.py

search and comment out (append a '#' on top of the line):

 command_var.append(-newaudio)

It worked for me, with avconv _and_ original ffmpeg (from ppa).

  It's look, like

  /usr/lib/devede/devede_avconv_convert.py

wrong in line 546. But I don't know, how fix it.

Title:
Warning message from ffmpeg program needs update

Status in the libav multimedia framework:
  Fix Released
Status in “libav” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “libav” source package in Precise:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
The warning message from the ffmpeg program needs to be updated. It should
instead say
*** THIS PROGRAM IS DEPRECATED ***\n
This program is only provided for compatibility
and will be removed in a future release. Please
  use avconv instead.\n

This is patched in Debian. See [1].

[Impact] - Users are seeing a different message everytime they run the
ffmpeg program. The original message is causing confusion amongst
general users of the ffmpeg who are not aware that the ffmpeg program
provided in Ubuntu is the ffmpeg program originally made available
  from the Libav project.

[Development Fix] - Message just needs to be updated. See [1]. Note
that the ffmpeg binary has been dropped completely in the development
  tree in libav.

  [Stable Fix] - See [1].

[Test Case] - Just run the ffmpeg program. Running 'ffmpeg -L' is sufficient
to see the warning. The original warning reads,
This program is not developed anymore and is only
provided for compatibility. Use avconv instead
(see Changelog for the list of incompatible changes).\n
  The new warning should read,
*** THIS PROGRAM IS DEPRECATED ***\n
This program is only provided for compatibility
and will be removed in a future release. Please
  use avconv instead.\n

[Regression Potential] - There's no potential regression.
