I'll back up Tjalling's work-around. I already had my boot partition on
a separate non-LVM partition at the front of my drive. My system started
booting normally on 4.4.0-38, and continues to do so on 4.4.0-42.

I'm currently encountering this with 4.4.0-36, although I had no other
4.x kernels installed to begin with, so haven't tried any of those.
Still boots fine with 3.13.
