since Brother only provides i386 packages for this driver you will probably

According to the release notes of gutenprint, the Canon PIXMA iP4850 has
(EXPERIMENTAL) support since version 5.2.9
Please try if the newer gutenprint 5.2.9+ included in vivid, 15.04 or 14.04 LTS
solves your problem.
You can test without installing by using an ubuntu-desktop live-cd.
