Testing Unity 8 from a Zesty nightly iso install on March 17 2017.

When clicking on the "Suspend" button in the session indicator,
  nothing happens.

This may or may not be an indicator-session issue. I need to triage
this and see where the breakage is, e.g. does it work in Unity 7 on
Zesty, and are there are any DBus signatures that have changed in
  Zesty that would cause this

Ubuntu personal store will need to be seeded. (see lp:1678249)
It will be a bit confusing to have this and the gnome-software store available
but not equally represented. Perhaps some UI design could help that.

  - restart the app

  Expected results:
  - u-s-s should open at the size it was last closed at

  Actutual results:
  - u-s-s window is smaller only showing one column

This may be related to limiting the max size which we used to have? I
think we should remove all max sizing restrictions on the app, and
bring back the maximize button which is not displayed either.

Bug description:
I have an idea which maybe considered to be implemented.
What if we use the space bar for moving the text cursor horizontally or even
vertically.
Currently, moving the cursor is quite hard and inaccurate.
Space bar is quite big and makes it a good place to swipe to move the cursor.
With this approach, we're not using more space and instead use a big part of
the keyboard that is only there mostly for inserting spaces. The sensitivity is
critical though because you don't want unintended movement of the cursor but I
think it's very much doable.

  Xenial 17Jan iso + unity8-desktop-session-mir package

When I logout, I get a black screen. Turns out unity8 is crashing with

But I noticed that libmirclient crashed when I switched to "zh".
While this isn't a supported use case, we shouldn't crash.

If you do not have access to the Ubuntu Error Tracker you can request it at

It seems that the configuration change is requested just a moment
before the device gets removed. The change actions are serialized,
depending on where there memory of mir::input::DefaultDevice is
allocated the segfault either occurs inside the lambda or inside
underlying mir::input::LibInputDevice in the platform. The activities
on input dispatch device removal and reconfiguration are serialized
inside the input thread, so we just need to clean the action queue (or
have multiple queues) before removing the devices.

I have a samsung also with Intel graphics.
When I get a console login I see a number of upstart jobs running, the top one
at around 16% cpu. Unity8-dash and dbus-daemon are also running as the second
user.
Unity8 is running as the first user only.
I see crashes for url-dispatcher and unity8-policykit-agent

Bug description:
Because we directly include mir client libraries in the platform (due
to a dependency of qtubuntu), when the mir interface is revised we get
out of sync. The mir team publishes a mir-libs snap that tracks these
changes and exposes a mir-libs content interface. We should
investigate if that can be used transparently by apps connected to the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1606946] Re: AppArmor denied opening /dev/shm/lttng-ust-wait*

2017-02-14 Thread Pat McGowan
The old bug was about errors reported in the apps logs. This is related to
logging into syslog.
I also see this on a core system. I only see reports related to the browser or
webapps.
Could something have changed or be missing in the apparmor profile? or some
configuration in the browser enabling this?

I could only reproduce it one way, by choosing switch user from the unity7

I could not reproduce the other instance I'd seen where switching out of unity8

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1648224] Re: [krilin] Dialer-app surface freezes during outgoing calls

2017-02-07 Thread Pat McGowan
For those experiencing this please provide any additional information
you can as it is not reproducible.

How are you starting the dialer before the call? Does it matter if is
started from the app scope, the launcher, contacts, etc?

Does it happen every time?

Does it help to clear the dialer's QML cache (in
/home/phablet/.cache/QML)

Status in dialer-app package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
My phone is a BQ Aquaris E4.5 Ubuntu Edition, running with Ubuntu
  15.04 OTA 14 (stable channel).

The dialer app version installed is 0.1+15.04.20160825.2-0ubuntu1.

  1. What I do
When I do an outgoing call.

  2. What I expect
The surface of the app continues to work, I can hang up, put on the
microphone etc.

  3. What happens
The surface of the dialer-app freezes, the call goes on. But I cannot hang
up, turn on the microphone etc.

  The only workaround is:
  - close dialer app in Task Manager
  - Open other app.
  - Re-open dialer app via the green bar on the top.
  - Re-opened dialer app has working surface, so I can hang up, turn on the
microphone etc.

The bug did already appear in OTA13 and is still present now in OTA
  14.

The bug does not occure when I accept an incoming call.

  The bus is reproducible.

Bug description:
The browser on my Ubuntu Phone (Meizu MX-4, OTA 14) does not open some
https-secured sites correctly, such as https://www.amazon.com or
https://www.amazon.de. The browser presents a warning about an invalid ssl
certificate, although the certificate appears perfectly valid. It then presents
the option to go back to a safe site or continue anyway. If I choose continue
anyway, it starts to load the site, but never completes. After some time it
stops loading and displays a rather incomplete version of the site. It is
clearly composed of only some of the pages' elements and incomplete. The amount
of the page that is displayed varies from time to time.
It appears that transmission times out while loading the page.
  Test case:
  1) Try loading https://www.amazon.com. Observe that webbrowser-app displays
warning about invalid certificate, without any apparent reason. Chose
"continue anyway". Observe, that the site is only incompletely loaded and
unsable.
  2) Try loading the web interface of my router: https://rkupper.no-ip.org/.
This site uses a self-signed certificate, which is correctly displayed as a
security risk. But self-signed certificates are a common use case on DSL or
cable routers' web interfaces. Choose "continue anyway". You should see the
login page of a fritz box router. Observe that the site is incompletely loaded
and the login button does nothing at all.

Bug description:
  [ Description ]

In Xenial, when dbus-user-session is installed, dbus' upstart job
still starts a new bus. Things get confused about which bus to talk
  to.

  [ Fix ]

Already fixed in Yakkety. Cherry-pick the upstart job. On top of
  Yakkety's version, call `dbus-update-activation-environment --verbose
--systemd GTK_MODULES', because Xenial does not have the change in
upstart to automatically publish to the systemd activation
  environment.

/etc/X11/Xsession.d/95dbus_update-activation-env is called too early -
before unity-gtk-module.conf is started - so dbus activated services
miss the GTK_MODULES environment variable. Update unity-gtk-
module.conf to set it in the dbus activation environment.

  [ QA ]

Install dbus-user-session, press print screen. It should be delayed if
you are experiencing this bug, and not delayed otherwise.

Remove dbus-user-session, make sure the session still works properly -
the global menu works, everything launches properly, etc.

Test that gnome-terminal has global menus in both situations.

  [ Regression potential ]

This change alters the way that the session bus is launched, even if
you aren't using dbus-user-session. Even though this same change is
deployed in ≥ yakkety, be aware of this. In yakkety we have installed
dbus-user-session by default, so the case where you don't have it
isn't as well tested. I would suggest focusing some testing on the non
  dbus-user-session case.

  [ Original report ]

After installing the deb (and then the snap), certain things in the
unity7 session take a very long time (30 to 60 secs), such as
launching chromium and ctrl-alt-t for a new terminal session.

Removing both the deb and the snap followed by a reboot does not fix
  the symptoms.

https://www.amazon.de.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1644323] Re: Installing unity8-session-snap adversely effects unity7

This official update regressed for me, I once again have the delays
starting certain apps. I had not seen them since installing the packages
per comment #13 which was a previous revision.

Status in unity-gtk-module source package in Xenial:
  Fix Committed

This is set per the fix for lp:1505302 but that also sets suid_dumpable
to 0. The core pattern seems moot in that case?

On a fresh boot with error reporting disabled by default:

Enable 'Report to Canonical: App crashes and errors':
  # cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern
  |/usr/share/apport/apport %p %s %c %P

Disable 'Report to Canonical: App crashes and errors':
  # cat /proc/sys/kernel/core_pattern

I think it should be reverting to "/bad_core_pattern" instead of
"core". Because "core" could fill the filesystem with core files (if
  ulimit allows it).

A bit more on the settings changes, I logged into the session again (and
got windows) and the previous change to the show launcher setting got
honored so it seems to have been written during the previous session.
But again changing the setting did not adjust the UI dynamically.
Perhaps something with the notification side of settings changes?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1654306] Re: Unity8 is not in desktop mode inside the snap session

2017-01-11 Thread Pat McGowan
Just hit this again, here I have two users, one running unity7, and one with
unity8 snap
This is the entire sequence but not sure if any of the steps are pre-requisites

Login to unity7
Login to the unity8 session
Switch back to unity7
Refresh the unity8 snap
Login to unity8
Logout of unity8
Login to unity8
-- UI is in staged mode
Logout, login
-- UI is in staged mode
Toggle desktop mode
Logout
Login
-- UI is in windowed mode
Select the Unity7 user or switch users
-- tablet greeter is displayed
Login to unity8, logout
-- desktop greeter is displayed

Bug description:
Currently it seems not possible to have working gettext translations
without included a patch glibc build in your snap

  - the core image doesn't have locales definition

that can be worked around by including locales definitions in the
snap, though that's tedious, ideally snapcraft would help there

  - traditional desktop applications are built with calls to 'bindtextdomain
("domain", LOCALEDIR)', where LOCALDIR is defined at buildtime and so pointing
to /usr

there seems to be no way to redirect to another directory at runtime

  - desktop applications needs system library translations sometime which means
langpacks need to be included in snaps

Status in unity-gtk-module source package in Xenial:

  Xenial amd64 laptop

Seems due to code like the following in config.h.in. Probably needs
to consider the value of $SNAP or just be a little more forgiving.

  inline bool isRunningInstalled() {
  static bool installed = (QCoreApplication::applicationDirPath() ==

QDir(("@CMAKE_INSTALL_PREFIX@/@CMAKE_INSTALL_BINDIR@")).canonicalPath());
  return installed;
  }

  inline QString messagingAppDirectory() {

When I opened the indicator menu, indicator-power seemed to be filling
out its menu correctly, so it is running. It just didn't give an icon
that u8 knew about (or we aren't bundling the right icons into the
snap?). But I bet that the indicator is giving back an absolute path
  that points outside the snap.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1654722] Re: Ubuntu Touch: No sound on speakers but OK on headset

2017-01-11 Thread Pat McGowan
Everything seems normal to me, that is the same as a working device.
I noticed you had played a game, last suggestion is to run the game again and
set the volume there. In the past there had been issues where the volume
remained muted playing media if sound effects were muted during a game,
although that should no longer be the case. and the fact that the headphones
work probably rules that out.
Otherwise perhaps backup the user data and reflash to rule out hardware. Sorry
out of ideas.
@jim any thoughts?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1654722] Re: Ubuntu Touch: No sound on speakers but OK on headset

2017-01-10 Thread Pat McGowan
Can you attach your /var/log/syslog from the time and
.cache/upstart/media-hub.log
Unfortunately it seems that the speakers are muted at a lower level, or perhaps
that the device thinks headphones are enabled.
One other thing is to ensure it does not think its paired with a bluetooth
audio output device.

The output of pacmd list-sink-inputs while playing and while not playing
may be interesting.

fwiw I don't see any obviously related changes from ota14.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1500242] Re: Bluetooth devices (Jabra BT250, Audi A3 car kit) can not be connected with BQ Aquaris 4.5

2017-01-09 Thread Pat McGowan
The bluez snap is based on the same code, but many of these issues are
device specific and difficult to resolve without those specific
environments. I believe the maintainer is still working on these
connection issues in general.

Title:
Bluetooth devices (Jabra BT250, Audi A3 car kit) can not be connected
  with BQ Aquaris 4.5

Status in Canonical System Image:
  In Progress
Status in bluez package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in ofono package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  STEPS:
Requirements: Aquaris E4.5, Jabra BT250 blue tooth handset device (rather old
one supports blue tooth 1.1 and therefore I thought should be no issue) or Audi
car kit (A3 2012 model)

  1. Put Jabra BT250 into receiving mode
  2. Phone searches automatically every 15 - 30 seconds for a new blue tooth
device
  3. Phone finds Jabra BT250 and asks for pairing code
  4. Enter code into phone
  5. Jabra BT250 automatically exits the pairing mode (which is a sign that
pairing should have worked)
  6. Phone looses connection to Jabra BT250
  7. Manual reconnection via phone works (shows Jabra BT250 as being connected)
but ignores the device

Same behaviour with Audi car kit (Audi A3, 2012 model)

  EXPECTED:
I expect that the blue tooth kits work similar to my Seat Alhambra (also 2012
model) where the blue tooth pairing etc. works great (except some bugs which
are already filed).

  ACTUAL:
No connection to the blue tooth device

  VERSIONS:
  OS-Build-Number: 25
  Ubuntu-Image: 20150825.1

  POSSIBLE ROOT CAUSE:
Is this issue also solved as soon as bluez5 is implemented? When will this be?
