[Touch-packages] [Bug 1508146] Re: Alt+left/right arrows switch between tty consoles (Gnome Shell vanishes), cannot disable

2018-09-05 Thread Sam Bull
Also just started seeing this after updating from Ubuntu GNOME 16.04 to
Ubuntu 18.04. The only relevant thing I can think of, is that I may have
changed the default login manager to GDM. Otherwise, can't think of
anything that might have triggered this.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1610534] Re: Open tabs keep getting forgotten

2017-07-25 Thread Sam Bull
So, I think I've found the cause to atleast part of the issue. Recently,
the app broke again failing to remember my tabs at all.

Looking in my files, I noticed a ~/.local/share/webbrowser-
app/session.json.lock file, even though the app wasn't running. The
actual session file was absolutely fine, and still contained my session
from a couple of weeks earlier, the app just wasn't loading it due to
the lock file. Deleting the lock file had my old session back up and
running.

Before I deleted it, I had a look at the lock file, and found that it
was an empty file. I would have expected the app to write its PID into
the lock file when creating it. Then, when the app opens and sees a lock
file, it can check if the given PID exists, and if so exit. If the
process no longer exists, then it can take over ownership of the lock
file.

Perhaps implementing this kind of basic behaviour would be enough to fix
this issue, as it looks like it may just be a crashing application
failing to remove its lock file.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1302004] Re: Indicator-datetime doesn't list in-progress events

2017-03-08 Thread Sam Bull
It might be an idea to create separate bug reports for each condition
that still fails to show all events.

Another one, if I remember correctly, is multi-day events, I believe it
only shows the event on it's start date and it's end date. e.g. event
starts Mon and ends Friday, it will not appear in indicator Tue-Thu.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1554504] Re: Calendar reminder does not wake phone when airplane mode is enabled

2016-09-26 Thread Sam Bull
Since filing this bug, the issue has only got worse. It has been 100%
reproducible for me for the past couple of months. I have a calendar
reminder to go off at 8am. Every morning, it only goes off when I
actually wake up the phone myself, in some cases this has been over an
hour past the time it was supposed to remind me. The only time it
successfully works, is if I have woken the phone a few minutes early
(presumably the phone doesn't go back to a deep sleep for a few minutes
or something).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1608496] [NEW] scope favourite button is annoying

2016-08-01 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

All scopes display a star button to unfavourite a scope. It is
easy/trivial to accidentally unfavourite a scope, and then have to
navigate to the manage scopes view to bring it back.

Given that removing a scope should be a very infrequent task, and given
how annoying it can be when done accidentally, I think these buttons
should be removed.

Setting favourite scopes can already be done from the manage scopes view

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1608493] [NEW] No easy way to delete a scope

2016-08-01 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

Bring up the manage scopes view. Attempt to delete a scope.

It seems there is no way to delete a scope from this view.

The only way to delete a scope, appears to be to try and find it in the

There should be a delete option in the manage scopes view, perhaps the

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1421923] Re: No notifications for new mails

2016-05-06 Thread Sam Bull
It sounds like there could be support for the W3C push API in the future. This
would have a much better chance of getting email servers to support push
notifications. This would allow push notifications to be supported cross
platform, including both mobile devices and desktop browsers.
https://lists.launchpad.net/ubuntu-phone/msg18205.html

It looks like Fastmail already support the W3C API, as I am able to
subscribe to notifications in Firefox.

  Hi!

In the BQ E4.5 Ubuntu Edition, I'm not getting notificactions for new
  mails.

  Testing (by example)
  1. Kill Dekko.
  2. Send you an email.
  3. Open Dekko.
  4. Change quickly to another app before Dekko starts.
  5. Bug: No notification
  6. Go to Dekko: You'll see your new mail.

FYI as improvement, for me, in Dekko is not clear if Dekko checks the
mail after X minutes or is a push notification.

  Thanks in advance!

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1514356] Re: Click sound taking a photo

2015-11-20 Thread Sam Bull
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1424147 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1424147

I'd be interested in this too. But, note there are legal implications. I
believe in some countries it is against the law to disable the sound.
So, this option would need to be hidden in certain countries, or atleast
include a warning reminding the user to check the law in their country
or similar. Probably best if Canonical's lawyers can advise on this
before anything is implemented.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1427566] Re: [Clock][UX] Add timers functionality

2015-10-13 Thread Sam Bull
A proposed lifecycle solution from bug #1502628:

I would like to be able to send a notification to the user after a set
amount of time. Additionally, I would like the user to be able to
respond to the notification with a couple of buttons (e.g. Yes/No or
similar).

This could also be used by the clock app for the timer functionality.

Currently, this is only possible with the push notification service.
But, as a developer, I do not want to implement the complex push
notification service or have to run a server for this simple use case,
and as a user, I do not want to depend on network connectivity for this
functionality.

This could be solved with some kind of interface to anacron that can
schedule a notification to appear at a specified time.

similar to setting an alarm of course, but the alarm setting UI is geared
towards persistent alarms, not ephemeral ones.

Example use case: there's a one-off thing I need to do at 2pm. I could
set an alarm for 2pm by adding a new alarm, and then going in and
deleting the alarm after it has rung but this is tedious.
Alternatively I could calculate the time until 2pm myself and then

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1493040] Re: PageHeadSections changes selection when adding/removing items

** Description changed:

When adding/removing an item from the model, the item selected by the
PageHeadSections changes. Selecting the next item along when removing an
item before the selection, and the previous item when adding an item
  before the selection.

Note that this behaviour works correctly in the Picker component (except
for bug #1344883). Basically, the element should pay attention to
changes in the model and update it's selectedIndex appropriately in

PageHeadSections: changes selection when adding/removing items

Bug description:
When adding/removing an item from the model, the item selected by the
PageHeadSections changes. Selecting the next item along when removing

Note that this behaviour works correctly in the Picker component

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1344883] Re: PageHeadSections/Picker: selectedIndex changes incorrectly when inserting/removing model entries

2015-09-07 Thread Sam Bull
OK, the section headers are not the same issue as the picker component.
I've attached a new example showing both.

With both components set to index 12:
After removing item 8, the section header moves to item 13, but the picker
jumps to item 7.
After removing item 3, the section header moves to item 13, whereas the
picker remains on item 12.

I can't test this with a ListView directly, as it does not have a selectedIndex.
So, the picker jumps down to the deleted item on some indices and remains
pointing at the correct item on others.
I've registered a separate bug for the off by one behaviour of the section
header (bug #1493040).

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1421249] Re: bluetooth can not be enabled sometimes (when booting with flight mode on being one case)

2015-08-18 Thread Sam Bull
Note, this doesn't even need flight mode, I can reproduce it 100% just
by switching off Bluetooth:

  Disable bluetooth.
  Reboot phone.
  Enable bluetooth.

This fails to enable bluetooth. If bluetooth is disabled when the phone
booted, the only was to enable it is to click enable and reboot the
phone.

The bluetooth indicator and the bluetooth page in system settings

to happen is that if bluetooth is off in the indicator/system settings
and I tap the switch, the switch will go green and in a moment the
bluetooth indicator will show up and bluetooth is enabled. When
bluetooth is on, I expect to go into the indicator/system settings and
turn the switch off, the switch will go gray and the bluetooth
indicator will hide and bluetooth is disabled. I expect this to work
whenever I want while the phone is on.

Sometimes, this does not work. For example, yesterday I disabled
bluetooth at some point in the evening and later I went to sleep. When
I woke up, I tried to turn it on via the indicator and also system
settings and it wouldn't turn on. In the indicator, the switch moves
to the green position briefly, then moves back to gray (the bluetooth
indicator remains hidden and bluetooth is disabled). In system
settings, the switch will stay green, but the bluetooth indicator
remains hidden and bluetooth is disabled. If I leave system settings
and come back, the the switch is now in the off position.

  /var/lib/urfkill/saved-states has:
  [BLUETOOTH]
  soft=false
  prev-soft=false

bluetoothd is confirmed to be running before and after using the
indicator and system settings when bluetooth cannot be enabled.

Workaround: reboot the phone and bluetooth will be enabled.

Note: this is not new behavior-- I'm only reporting it now (partly
because I thought it was fixed for a while, but that might have been
because I was rebooting a lot at the time)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1478016] [NEW] Cannot read full message in indicator

2015-07-24 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

When clicking a message to expand that message, the message is still
truncated. This used to expand and show the complete message (several
month ago).

It seems that expanding now does little more than display the field for
replying.

This is not of much use being able to reply to a message I haven't read;
if it's a case of saving space, it would be more practical to display
the full message and no reply box.

Number of times I've expanded a message and wanted to reply without reading the
full message: exactly 0.
Number of times I've wanted to quickly read the full message and not reply:
probably around 50%.

Given that the message can be contracted again with another tap, I see
little reason not to display the full message when expanding, it seemed
to work well before.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1465048] Re: PageHeadSections does not scroll

2015-06-29 Thread Sam Bull
As said, it's a worst-case scenario. I expect 99% of users to enable 2-5
languages and not be a problem. But, it is possible for someone to
enable every language. I see no reason to arbitrarily limit the users
choice, they are smart enough to decide what is suitable to them.

I've attached a screenshot of what it looks like, with 4 languages
viewable, you should be able to see that it provides a quick convenient
switch between languages without taking up much space.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1465003] [NEW] U1db.Document silently ignores key assignment

Public bug reported:

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1442105] Re: GPS not working on my BQ Ubuntu Touch

2015-05-16 Thread Sam Bull
If you are getting position with WiFi, that sounds like you are getting
the WiFi based location from the HERE service. This position can be
fairly accurate, but is not GPS, it will also work without connecting to
a WiFi point, just as long as WiFi is enabled and it can see a list of
surrounding access points.

GPS is working for me again after the last update (on Nexus 4 though).
Bear in mind that it will likely take around 12-20 mins to get a fix
(the first time), and by the sounds of it the phone must not sleep in
that time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1453196] [NEW] Events disappear from indicator after event start time

2015-05-08 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

After the start time of an event, the event disappears from the
indicator.

Scenario 1: My phone sounds a notification for an event. I look at my
phone 10 seconds later, and there is no indication as to what the
notification was for (not saving the notification in the messaging
indicator is probably a separate bug in itself). Looking at the
indicator shows no current events, the next event is hours/days away.

Scenario 2: I have no notification for an event, and want to check what
I should be doing now. The indicator shows no event for several hours,
when in fact I should be at an event that started 5 minutes ago.

Scenario 3: I am heading over to a job interview, but have forgotten
where it is. I open the indicator so I can quickly click the event and
get the location details from it. Oh, but I'm a minute or two late, and
the event is not displayed anymore.

Proposed solution: Remove event at the event's end time.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1453189] [NEW] Duplicate events don't show in the indicator

2015-05-08 Thread Sam Bull
Public bug reported:

I have some events that recur regularly (such as every week). Looking in
the indicator these events appear only once, despite them recurring
before the next event.

For example, I have right now, 3 weekly events which are being displayed
in the indicator for this week. But, the 4th event in the indicator is
for an event occurring in a few weeks time. This suggests that I have
nothing for several weeks between the end of this week and that event.

Another issue I can see this causing: if I have a daily recurring event,
glancing at the indicator won't tell me if I have a free day tomorrow or
not, until after the event has occurred today.

-
- Proposed solution: Remove event at the event's end time.
+ Proposed solution: Remove event at the event's end time and set the
+ event's time to 'Now'.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1408263] Re: Edge gestures still get lost (mako)

2015-04-03 Thread Sam Bull
This has also been happening to me a little too frequently. It's
particularly bad, given that you can't use the system without these edge
gestures, being unable to return to the home screen, switch app, launch
new apps etc.

Like others, this seems to happen when in a pocket, and most times when
playing music. If music-app still has some kind of exception for
suspending the phone, then that might explain why it happens more
frequently there, if it is somehow linked to suspending.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1207772] Re: [Addres book] Date of birth field is missing

The calendar app appears to list 'Birthdays Anniversaries' as a
calendar, which makes it more confusing and inconsistent while birthdays
are still not exposed. If this is not going to be ready soon, then the
calendar app should probably not show that calendar for the time being.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1366586] Re: Music app stops playing when an app plays a sound

2014-09-12 Thread Sam Bull
Yes, but my point is that if developers miss the documentation, and
don't set this setting, it shouldn't cause disruption to the whole
platform, which is what will currently happen.

If alerts is the default, then a developer not selecting multimedia for
their app will only disrupt their own app, and will more likely be
caught and fixed.

Currently, not changing the setting to alerts cause the developers app
to work perfectly fine, but causes the rest of the platform to suffer as
it cuts off music etc. Somebody with less familiarity with the platform
will likely register bugs against the music-app or the platform, as it
appears that the music is not functioning, thus further reducing the
chances of the guilty app getting fixed.

2014-09-10 Thread Sam Bull
If this remains the default, then every 3rd party app that misses this
setting is going to cause the same problem whenever they choose to play
a sound, which will be rather irritating. Note that this also happens
everytime a notification sounds due to a text message or similar.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1351424] Re: browser, settings and calculator icons too similar to another well known mobile O/S

2014-08-02 Thread Sam Bull
I'd also like to point out that some of these icons don't even make
sense. A quote taken from http://asktog.com/atc/principles-of-
interaction-design/ :

The inverse of skeuomorphism is abstraction, a prominent feature in so-
called flat design, a fashion that took hold in 2013, turning once well-
understood icons and other elements into meaningless abstractions and
even false symbols. (For example, the icon for the browser on the iPhone
became a compass, only connected to the concept of the web through the
vaguest of abstractions. The iPhone has an actual compass, so they
turned its icon into… another compass! Two compass icons: One tells you
which way is north and the other connects you to your bank account. The
Settings icon had originally looked like the inner workings of a clock,
clearly carrying the message that this is an app that will let you see
and affect the inside workings of the iPhone. That was abstracted to the
point that it looks exactly like a large industrial fan.)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1186181] Re: [Indicator] battery icon unreliable at low battery levels

2014-07-31 Thread Sam Bull
A comment on the 30 mins idea: that seems fine for a laptop with a few
hours battery life, it gives enough time to finish what you're doing and
shutdown the machine. But, for an always-on device like a phone, 30 mins
is not enough warning to do anything if I happen to be out and about; I
would expect atleast a 2 or 3 hour warning in order to have a chance of
being able to charge my phone before it runs out.
