Same issue here. Just updated from Ubuntu GNOME 14.04 to Ubuntu GNOME 14.10 and it doesn't log into gnome; just a black screen. When I switch to the terminal it shows the following error: systemd-logind[1148]: Failed to start unit user@1000.service: Unknown unit: user@1000.service -- You
