Hi David, The ID_MODEL_FROM_DATABASE is probably set (for the firewire controller) by udev/systemd, see the hwdb directory of systemd sources. Exactly. I've already realized it and it require discussion between ALSA, PulseAudio and systemd about which part of userspace has these information

FYI, a part of my work is already included in Linux 3.16 or later. In this bug, the reporter uses my breeding-edge in github.com, thus you may have an idea that this is due to out-of-tree kernel modules. But you can actually see the same issue on Ubuntu utopic.
