This problem has been RESOLVED. After much hassle, machine was returned to Lenovo for service. They could not find any hardware test that indicated any failures, but after I raised a ruckus they replaced the "system board" and now the problem is gone. I am curious. I wish I knew what really failed... Oh well... I hope that this was a useful post.
