Other apps affected by cairo bug, and can be fixed with LD_PRELOAD, as in #6: firefox, chromium-browser, thunderbird (Save as... and File selection dialogs); paprefs; gimp's PDF import filter. To make gimp's PDF import work again, a bit more complex command and more library regression need: alias gimp='LD_PRELOAD="/home/test/Downloads/libcairo2_1.10.2-6.1ubuntu2_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcairo.so.2 /home/test/Downloads/libpoppler-glib8_0.18.4-1ubuntu3.1_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpoppler-glib.so.8 /home/test/Downloads/libpoppler19_0.18.4-1ubuntu3.1_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libpoppler.so.19 /home/test/Downloads/libtiff4_3.9.5-2ubuntu1.8_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libtiff.so.4" gimp' The required libraries are here http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise/libs/ . [Touch-packages] [Bug 1294699] Re: Xubuntu desktop crashes in call to cairo after setting fixed-width bitmap (pcf) GTK font
During further investigation, i found that apps subjected to this bug, starts to work when i downgrade cairo library to one from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which version is known to be free from this bug. This is cairo 1.10, libcairo2_1.10.2-6.1ubuntu2_i386.deb. Using it with 'dpkg -i' solves these problems. But adds many other problems: nautilus, synaptic, gedit, and even mc, refuses to work anymore. So i try to have both libs, and feed only apps subjected to cairo bug, with old library (i extract .deb package as archived file to get old library binary 'libcairo.so.2'). To obtain this, i try LD_PRELOAD. For gimp and eclipse, i use simple method that works from command line only:
echo "alias gimp=LD_PRELOAD=/home/test/Downloads/libcairo2_1.10.2-6.1ubuntu2_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcairo.so.2 gimp" >> ~/.bash_aliases echo "alias eclipse=LD_PRELOAD=/home/test/Downloads/libcairo2_1.10.2-6.1ubuntu2_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcairo.so.2 /opt/eclipse/eclipse" >> ~/.bash_aliases
For LO, i try to make fully transparent setup which will work also from GUI, Ubuntu Main Menu, etc. NOTE: Using this way, it is NOT possible to open documents with spaces in file name. It is don't care for me; i can't find any possibility to replace '$@' to something supporting spaces.
sudo rm /usr/bin/soffice # this is just a link sudo rm /usr/bin/libreoffice # this is just a link sudo touch /usr/bin/soffice sudo chmod a+rwx /usr/bin/soffice sudo echo "LD_PRELOAD=/home/test/Downloads/libcairo2_1.10.2-6.1ubuntu2_i386/usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/libcairo.so.2 /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/soffice \$@" > /usr/bin/soffice sudo cp /usr/bin/soffice /usr/bin/libreoffice
This all is probably ugly and dirty, but finally let me really switch to Ubuntu 14.04.3 LTS from 12.04 LTS for everyday production use. I can't confirm about espeak, or about skype as in bug #361615, but i affected by this bug in my own apps using Portaudio lib. The same error flood and 20 secs delay arrives even with this simplest test program:
#include #include #include PaStream *stream; int main(void) { Pa_Initialize(); Pa_OpenDefaultStream(&stream, 2, 0, paFloat32, 192000, paFramesPerBufferUnspecified, NULL, NULL); puts("Finally I started.\n"); return EXIT_SUCCESS; }
and it is noticeable it still not fixed since 2009. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1476736] Re: Crash in cairo-scaled-font.c:459: _cairo_scaled_glyph_page_destroy: Assertion `!scaled_font->cache_frozen' failed.
Yes, it is fonts related issue, as i can see now: i found a way to reproduce it. 1. Boot from live flash drive (i use 14.04.2 LTS 32-bit version for that) 2. Install 'gimp' 3. Enable Universe repos 4. Install 'gnome-tweak-tool' 5. Install 'xfonts-terminus' (at this point, gimp will still run) 6. Run 'gnome-tweak-tool', select Fonts, and in 2nd selector from top, select 'Terminus 14' Wait a bit when new font will apply. Now, starting gimp, it will crash with error shown above. Looks like it is not related with this particular font, because other mentioned reports rarely related with this font. It is not looks like problem with font package itself (possible bugs, etc), because other software runs with it and looks properly. On Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS, this bug does not exist. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1211102] Re: Get rid of 0.5s latency when playing audio over Bluetooth with A2DP
I obtain other receiver module, bc57f687a05 based (appears as BLK-MD-BC05-B). It provides two profiles, HSP/HFP and A2DP. So now i able to switch profiles, but it is not helpful. Switching between them only changes delay but not removes it. HSP/HFP gives 1/4 s but unacceptable sound quality. A2DP gives 1/2 s regardless of switching. Looks like not driver/OS problem, but unavoidable HW problem. I now wonder if someone (using any OS / HW) can get high quality sound via bluetooth without delays. Unless that, bluetooth considered as unusable at all for audio, and also, Kirk Shrewsbury's answer at link mentioned in #2, considered correct.
