I was having this same issue after plugging in my screen. Oddly enough
this issue was resolved when I was trying to solve another issue about
screen locking up when opening a new application.
Here is the solution that fixed both issues.

Using an Nvidia (580) with an Intel (HD3000) on a desktop PC this issue
is substantially improved in the latest xorg-edgers releases; it's now
very close to working perfectly.

Having tried many, many solutions -something seems to work! Wait for the
OS to boot up completely and then connect the displaylink Docking
station attached to monitor! (Easier method is to hook up the docking
station and the monitor on same power source and switch ON after the
system has booted
