[Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
Lukasz Piepiora, given the issue is improved in Vivid with the latest driver, but not working as expected, let this report be re-scoped to how the screen is visible to Ubuntu as a single, big instance instead of two separate screens. Hence, could you please report this upstream via https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia#Reporting_an_upstream_bug ? ** Package changed: xorg (Ubuntu) => nvidia-graphics-drivers-346 (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: nvidia-graphics-drivers-346 (Ubuntu) Status: New => Triaged ** Summary changed: - Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card + 10de:0ffc Incorrect display when using monitor on the left ** Summary changed: - 10de:0ffc Incorrect display when using monitor on the left + 10de:0ffc [Lenovo ThinkPad W530] Incorrect display when using monitor on the left ** Description changed: - When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity - behaves incorrectly. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
I was able to install Nvidia Driver 346.35 (as it was the latest version available in the repository), the situation is indeed beter. The graphics is no longer corrupted. I am able to use my monitor positioned on the left side. There is however one issue, the screen is visible to Ubuntu as a single, big instance instead of two separate screens. I mean that if I make a window full screen, instead of going full screen on the monitor on which it is positioned, it spans accross two monitors. Additionally I don't know if that's relevant, but Ubuntu's Display tool sees correctly two screens while nvidia-settings shows only one (which is incorrect), please see attachment. PS. I am running Vivid build from 1st of March. ** Attachment added: "onevstwo.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1305264/+attachment/4331384/+files/onevstwo.png ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305264 Title: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity behaves incorrectly. The screen on the left monitor is containing duplication of the main screen. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
I have installed NVIDIA 340.76. On Nouveau it doesn't happen this way, but Nouveau is a different story. There I have some sort of artefacts, the system is overall very slow, and mouse pointer is blinking. I don't know if this happened prior to Trusty, I was using card in a discrete mode back then (BIOS setting), and I have disabled Optimus reporting to an operating system. When I disable it, and run in discrete mode now, it works more or less okay, with an exception of random freezes at boot time (normally if it boots it doesn't freeze later), and freezes on for example keyboard actions modifying brightness. However I think this is a different problem, as it only exists if I'm running discrete mode with optimus reporting disabled. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305264 Title: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity behaves incorrectly. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
I did use Live Ubuntu booted from a USB Drive. I have configured BIOS in my computer to report Optimus and to use Nvidia Optimus technology. I was able to boot into the system. I have installed recommended Nvidia Drivers, and restarted the computer. The issue more or less exists, however now it manifests itself in a different way. The image is stretched and mouse "misses" the point where I want to click, yielding the system unusable. Please see attachment. In the example I was trying to click on the window "Does the display look okay?" to drag it, however instead, on a second monitor, selection started to appear (see right side of the screenshot). This behaviour makes it impossible to click on anything (ignoring the fact, that the look of UI prevents you from using the system anyway), the only way to operate the system is to use keyboard (the system responds to tab and enter in a proper way). Additionally now this happens even, if the external monitor is virtually placed on the right side of a primary display. When the external display is not in use, the system behaves more or less okay. ** Attachment added: "stretched.png" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg/+bug/1305264/+attachment/4325028/+files/stretched.png -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305264 Title: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity behaves incorrectly. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
With a new BIOS: G5ETA1WW (2.61 ) 01/22/2015 The system freezes after boot at a login screen. The only option to get it booted is to go to a BIOS settings and modify settings in a way that an integrated card is used, and the BIOS doesn't report an Optimus Card to an operating system. Technically I cannot reproduce the issue, but that's due to the fact that I cannot go past the login screen. ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305264 Title: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity behaves incorrectly. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1305264] Re: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card
Lukasz Piepiora, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. As per http://support.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and- netbooks/thinkpad-w-series-laptops/thinkpad-w530 an update to your computer's buggy and outdated BIOS is available (2.61). If you update to this following https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate does it change anything? If it doesn't, could you please both specify what happened, and provide the output of the following terminal command: sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date For more on BIOS updates and linux, please see https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ReportingBugs#Bug_reporting_etiquette . Please note your current BIOS is already in the Bug Description, so posting this on the old BIOS would not be helpful. As well, you don't have to create a new bug report. Once the BIOS is updated, and the information above is provided, then please mark this report Status New. Thank you for your understanding. ** Tags added: bios-outdated-2.61 ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Low ** Changed in: xorg (Ubuntu) Status: New => Incomplete -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to xorg in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1305264 Title: Incorrect display when using monitor on the left on NVIDIA Optimus Card Status in xorg package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When using configuring screen to be placed on the left side Unity behaves incorrectly.
