Title:
  network manager discards upstream DNS

Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
if an interface is not configured in /etc/network/interfaces network-manager
takes this interface.
Then dhclient is started, assigning an address and route. For DNS dnsmasq is
configured to listen on localhost, then resolv.conf is configured to use the
localy running dns. The upstream dns servers address is silently discarded,
breaking dns resolution.

Moving network-manager out of control (by adding the interface to
/etc/network/interfaces) removes dnsmasq, but makes the whole thing
work again, because the upstream dns is now entered into
  /etc/resolv.conf.
