i see now
setting "HandleLidSwitch=ignore" in /etc/systemd/logind.conf will my
laptop from suspending completely. Not ideal.

in /etc/systemd/logind.conf.

I'm having the exact same problem after upgrading from ubuntu-gnome
14.10 on an older HP Pavillion DV1000 laptop. Got a bit too frustrated
with it all so I re-installed 14.10 again (so not much use I'm afraid
for logs, etc... but maybe the hardware I'm running helps, who knows)...

My case is if after fresh booting up I put my laptop to the sleep mode
and then wake it up, it keeps entering the sleep mode again and again
every ~30 seconds. I'm running clean ubuntu 15.04.
