I confirm the strong noise issue described by ArnauC. I have Ubuntu 15.10 with kernel 4.2.0-25-generic on HP ProBook G3 installed. I have executed alsa setup earlier and it worked sometimes. Adding the lines proposed by Andy fixed the sound issue even after reboot. Although the strong noise issue arose. Actually, it did happen SOMETIMES even earlier, when I tried for use the alsa force, but now it's 100% reproducible. Also I wanna mention, that this sound appears even before I select the OS to boot, so it must be some bios configuration problem or whatever. I tried googling it, but did not succeed at all. How can I help in the bug investigation? I tried running ubuntu-bug audio, it starts playing beeps through my speakers. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1525554] Re: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Hi! I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS with kernel 3.19.0-25 installed in a HP Probook 430 G3. When I finished the installation, the sound doesn't works. I followed the Andy C instructions and it works. I didn't use the alsa_setup.sh script. -I only put this lines in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 options snd-hda-intel model=basic But when I reboot the laptop (not halt or poweroff), before Ubuntu starts, a very strong noise appears. At every reboot this noise appears. -I corrected this problem, I just put the next line in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf options snd-hda-intel power_save=0 Now, I've updated the kernel to 3.19.0-47 and the strong noise appears again. I've tried to solve adding another option to the file: options snd-hda-intel power_save_controller=N But doesn't works I've read the kernel documentation pages about ALSA but I haven't find the solution https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/ALSA-Configuration.txt https://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation/sound/alsa/HD-Audio.txt Has someone an idea to resolve this issue? I also have a HP 430 G3, on Ubuntu 15.10, kernel 4.2.0-23. Same issue (no sound). Above solution from Simone (14-12-2015) failed to work for me. But the following does work and has the advantage of persisting. 1. Create a new modprobe.d file: /etc/modprobe.d/intel.conf 2. Add these entries: options snd-hda-intel single_cmd=1 options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 3. reboot. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1525554] Re: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
Today I added some debug output to 4.4-rc8. That's what I got so far: When the codec probing fails, it takes exactly a bit more than 5 seconds from sending the verb [ 394.482417] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: snd_hdac_bus_send_cmd: Try to send val=0xf to getting: [ 399.524257] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: spurious response 0x14f150f4:0x0, last cmd=0x0f When it works, after reloading a few time, the probing looks well: [ 798.042375] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: bound :00:02.0 (ops i915_audio_component_bind_ops [i915]) [ 798.055895] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: codec_mask = 0x5 [ 798.057519] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: snd_hdac_bus_send_cmd: Try to send val=0xf [ 798.057525] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: azx_rirb_get_response starting, last cmd=0x000f [ 798.057578] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: codec #0 probed OK [ 798.057580] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: snd_hdac_bus_send_cmd: Try to send val=0x200f [ 798.057583] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: azx_rirb_get_response starting, last cmd=0x200f [ 798.057615] snd_hda_intel :00:1f.3: codec #2 probed OK I'm just starting to understand the code. If somebody with a better background has some advice what could be useful to try, post it here or ping "skoe" at freenode/#ubuntu-kernel. btw: I'm quite sure that the script alsa_setup.sh has nothing to do with the issue, but the force-reload is sufficient. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1525554 Title: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in linux package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: No sound on brand new HP ProBook 470 G3 after installing Ubuntu 14.04 on headphones or internal speakers. Re: [Touch-packages] [Bug 1525554] Re: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
I have installed ubuntu 15.10 and ran the solution proposed by Simone, see below, and that worked! It is indeed a strange workaround, but it works. I hope it'll work properly when ubuntu 16.04 arrives. [Touch-packages] [Bug 1525554] Re: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all
My two cents, you have some recent hardwares but use quite old kernel. Your issue is expected, and the solution is to use recent release/kernel with recent hardware. Either dist-upgrade (or better do a fresh install to avoid possible settings conflict disturbing the system) to at least wily or xenial (which smoothly works, even if its a development work still on going, blah blah ...); or test trusty + kernel 4.3 if you are afraid by the previous proposal. http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/ -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1525554 Title: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: No sound on brand new HP ProBook 470 G3 after installing Ubuntu 14.04 on headphones or internal speakers. Pending resolution of the bug I found an accidental solution... I don't know if it helps bug resolution. Since I don't have any Output Card listed in Audo Settings, executing alsa_setup.sh (from http://www.stchman.com/alsa_update.html) it create permanently a new "Dummy Output", obviously not working. Then running these commands audio from speakers is working until shutdown: sudo modprobe snd-hda-intel sudo alsa force-reload <--for 3 times but waiting 10-15 seconds between one and the other This is a very strange workaround, but it work for me! -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to alsa-driver in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1525554 Title: [HP ProBook 470 G3, Intel Skylake HDMI, Digital Out, HDMI] No sound at all Status in alsa-driver package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: No sound on brand new HP ProBook 470 G3 after installing Ubuntu 14.04 on headphones or internal speakers.
