Figured what was wrong:
I had an external display attached. Desktop extended to that display with
amdcccle and XFCE / settings / Display
The video got cropped when the external display was NOT attached. Watched the
movie on the internal LCD.
The way I switched between the modes with/without
Adam Groszer, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu
better.
Could you please run the following command once from a terminal by ensuring you
have the package xdiagnose installed, and that you click the Yes button for
attaching additional debugging information:
apport-collect -p
apport information

Title:
fglrx, vlc video play crops picture
As on the screenshot the picture can be seen only in the upper left,
when making a snapshot with VLC the full picture is saved.
