[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800055] Re: iwd does not work with network manager
Oh, I know you didn't. It was a comment about Will's suggestion on his bug (I marked duplicate of this one). FWIW, I'm all for changing the default if testing shows there's a benefit, and my suggestion was that if we're to do it, do it sooner rather than later; but it *does* require concerted, planned testing, and a risk analysis... and probably carrying the patches for TLS EAP methods. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800055 Title: iwd does not work with network manager Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I configured network manager to use iwd, unfortunately it doesn't work: Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.4358] device (wlp4s0): state change: unmanaged -> unavailable (reason 'managed', sys-iface-state: 'external') Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_type: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_type_is_subtype_of: assertion 'g_variant_type_check (type)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_boolean: assertion 'g_variant_is_of_type (value, G_VARIANT_TYPE_BOOLEAN)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_string: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): new IWD device state is (null) Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): State (null) unknown Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_dbus_proxy_call_internal: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_PROXY (proxy)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1800055/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

To be clear, I wasn't suggesting changing the default yet. As you say, doing so today would be a regression. I'd just like folks who don't require WPA Enterprise support to be able to test iwd (with network manager). In my limited testing (by hand, not using network-manager) at a recent sprint iwd is orders of magnitude better than wpasupplicant in 'busy' wireless networks. -- James -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800055 Title: iwd does not work with network manager Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I configured network manager to use iwd, unfortunately it doesn't work: Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.4358] device (wlp4s0): state change: unmanaged -> unavailable (reason 'managed', sys-iface-state: 'external') Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_type: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_type_is_subtype_of: assertion 'g_variant_type_check (type)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_boolean: assertion 'g_variant_is_of_type (value, G_VARIANT_TYPE_BOOLEAN)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_string: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): new IWD device state is (null) Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): State (null) unknown Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_dbus_proxy_call_internal: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_PROXY (proxy)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1800055/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Touch-packages] [Bug 1800055] Re: iwd does not work with network manager
AFAIK at the moment there isn't proper WPA Enterprise support (well, most TLS methods appears to be missing kernel patches). Let's please be careful about changing the default wireless daemon to iwd, there's a couple of moving parts there, it's not just about changing the software. For instance, iwd's design makes me expect that some hardware will no longer be supported unless it is fully ported to using netlink rather than ioctls (hopefully I am wrong about this). That's not a problem for Intel-based wireless, but AIUI there are still lots of other drivers in the wild. My 0.02$: if we want to change from wpasupplicant to iwd, let's make sure we have everything in place as early as possible (kernel patches), and let's do some careful regression testing on a variety of hardware so we can try to catch issues before they happen. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Touch seeded packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1800055 Title: iwd does not work with network manager Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I configured network manager to use iwd, unfortunately it doesn't work: Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.4358] device (wlp4s0): state change: unmanaged -> unavailable (reason 'managed', sys-iface-state: 'external') Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_type: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_type_is_subtype_of: assertion 'g_variant_type_check (type)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_boolean: assertion 'g_variant_is_of_type (value, G_VARIANT_TYPE_BOOLEAN)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_get_string: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): new IWD device state is (null) Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: [1540501943.7492] device (wlp4s0): State (null) unknown Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_variant_unref: assertion 'value != NULL' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_dbus_proxy_call_internal: assertion 'G_IS_DBUS_PROXY (proxy)' failed Oct 25 15:12:23 malefic NetworkManager[17004]: g_object_unref: assertion 'G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1800055/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages Post to : touch-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~touch-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
