Title:
19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume (fails in
kernel 5.0.0 but works in 4.20.17)

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
With 19.04, Intel Corporation 8 Series/C220 Series Chipset High
Definition Audio Controller intermittently is not enabled when
resuming from sleep. The HDMI sound device is enabled but that is not
hooked up on my system. New with 19.04, when sound works after
resume, an icon labeled "Built in Audio Stereo" appears during the
  resume process.

Unsure if this is related, but sound seems to sleep when not in use.
Launching sound enabled apps produces a quiet "tick, thud" sound as
  sound system turns on.

When sound is not working, killall pusleaudio "fixes" the issue.

2019-05-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Per comment #17, it sounds like this was just a kernel regression.

** Summary changed:

- 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume
+ 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume (fails in kernel 5.0.0
but works in 4.20.17)

** No longer affects: pulseaudio (Ubuntu)

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822426] Re: 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-05-18 Thread Dan Kegel
FWIW, I ran into this after updating to 19.04 from 18.04.
Audio working fine with HDMI (yay) but not with back panel audio (boo)
unless I ran aplay as root, e.g.
sudo aplay -D sysdefault:CARD=PCH /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Left.wav

ps showed timidity running. 'sudo apt remove timidity; sudo killall
timidity' resolved the problem.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822426] Re: 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-04-07 Thread Darin Miller
uname -a: Linux Imagined 4.20.17-042017-generic
NVIDIA Driver Version: 418.56

Resumed 3 times from sleep with the 4.20 kernel, so far sound is working
fine.

Sometimes the issues does not appear until the next day (warm vs cold
hw?), so I will report back tomorrow.

If sound works for next few days, I will try editing /proc/modprobe.d
/alsa-base.conf and reboot into the 5.0 kernel.

I still lost sound after setting "realtime-scheduling = no" in

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822426] Re: 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-04-04 Thread Hui Wang
According to the log, when problem happens, the Nvidia hdmi codec
doesn't response the HDA controller, Usually it is nvidia graphic
driver's issue.

Let us disable the nvidia hdmi audio temporarily and see if this problem
still exists?

edit /proc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf and add "options snd-hda-intel
enable=1,0", then reboot and check if there is only hda built-in audio,
if yes, please go ahead to do the test.

thx.

2019-04-04 Thread Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu
Looks like my problem was unrelated to this issue, it was actually
caused by timidity blocking the physical sound device.

This workaround fixed it: https://askubuntu.com/questions/1085174/no-

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822426] Re: 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-04-04 Thread Cristian Măgherușan-Stanciu
I also noticed this, my laptop's integrated Intel audio device is also
missing from pulseaudio(both as input and output), but I can see other
HDMI or USB sound devices I may have attached and I can switch to them
and they work as expected.

Interestingly the device works when playing a WAV file using aplay, but
only if I run aplay as root. As a normal user I can just see it in
alsamixer and I can play with the volume and mute controls there.

Here's the error I get when using aplay as my ordinary user:
$  aplay test.wav
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1071:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to create IPC semaphore
aplay: main:828: audio open error: Permission denied

Can you please try some older kernel versions and tell us if any of
those avoid the bug?

Title:
19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  New

Thanks. It looks like the audio driver in the kernel is broken/confused
by suspend and resume:

Not sure if recent updates have fixed the issue, but problem has not
appeared after several sleep and awake events. I will ensure to post
details and try the above edit if problem recurs.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1822426] Re: 19.04 Built in Intel HDA sound is disabled upon resume

2019-03-31 Thread Daniel van Vugt
1. Please reproduce the problem and then while sound is not working run:

   journalctl -b0 > journal.txt

and send us the file 'journal.txt'.

2. Please try editing /etc/pulse/daemon.conf and add a new line:

   realtime-scheduling = no

and reboot. Does that fix it?
