Weird. The bug description says you originally installed 19.10, which
also would not install xserver-xorg-video-intel. So I don't think this
is a problem most people will encounter.
Just don't install xserv

Thanks Daniel. I uninstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel and removed
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf, which sorted all the display
corruption issues.

Thanks for the bug report. It appears at least half the problem was
using an old unsupported graphics driver, which makes this a duplicate
of bug 1867668.
To be sure you have removed that so we can focus on
