Audio works from an ISO. I don't know how to reset whatever
configuration is wrong, so I'll reinstall.

I moved /etc/pulse/ and reinstalled pulseaudio. Now the "Sound
Settings" applet looks correct, but still sound is not working. The
PulseAudio volume control simply says "Establishing connection to
PulseAudio. Please wait...". This is what mplayer says:

That sounds like it might be the problem. Please look in /etc/pulse/ and
see if you can remember what you changed. Failing that, just
reinstalling and not modifying the system, might be the fastest
solution.

I tried both: I removed jackd and deleted my local PulseAudio
configuration and rebooted and the problem is still there.

I remember changing a PulseAudio setting to allow different users on
the same desktop to use sound. I can't remember how I did it, but
could that be a global setting that's causing a problem?

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1900481] Re: [Vostro 3300, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Mic, Top] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2020-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Actually, more likely the problem is that you have the Jack audio daemon
installed. It might be stealing the audio devices from PulseAudio.

Please try uninstalling 'jackd'.

[Touch-packages] [Bug 1900481] Re: [Vostro 3300, IDT 92HD81B1X5, Mic, Top] Pulseaudio fails to detect card

2020-10-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like bug 1866194 but you also seem to have the fix for that.
Regardless, please try:

  cd ~/.config
  rm -rf pulse

and then reboot.
