The culprit is a patch added for bug 1727401, it needs to be replaced
with a larger set of backports from 17.3...

uwer: which xserver versions do these machines have? apt-cache policy
xserver-xorg-core
And do both have xserver-xorg-video-intel(-hwe-16.04) installed? One
theory is that only machines installed with full HWE stack are affected,
those do not have -intel installed but use the modesetting X driver
This issue seems to affect Blender.
Blender fails to start, with the crash log being the following:
# backtrace
blender(BLI_system_backtrace+0x20) [0x1a6c8e0]
blender() [0x107a525]
/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/libc.so.6(+0x354b0) [0x7f47797c04b0]
/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/dri/i965_dri.so(+0x5ddc16)
of course
you can test ppa:paulo-miguel-dias/pkppa if mesa 17.3.1 fixes this for
you too, as it did on 1741447

I'm afraid this Bug has affected some of my installs too. My workaround
for now is to activate "discreet graphics" in BIOS.

Bug misfiled, would've been useful to know about it a month ago :/
If you are able to build the package from ppa:ubuntu-x-swat/updates then
that would be great. PPA builders are offline for days now because of
SPECTRE.
