 Anyway just thinking aloud...

See my other mail in this thread, it was a long one where I described
what functionality would I need to write a merge driver for po files.

I'm sure Pootle supports merging of po files at some level (ie. the
functionality is there, but I have no idea how to use it from
commadline).

Given that these require merging and merging po files is not supported

This is really unrelated to version control conflicts where the file
format is (possibly) broken by an update clashing with local changes.

This is interesting. Git supports different merge drivers, so
technically it would be possible to handle the following scenario:

There is version 'A' on the server.

Bob clones the repo, changes string foo to bar, and of course that will
update the last modified line in the po file as well.

Alice has the server version of the po file on the Pootle server and
changes baz to blah (+ the last modified line, of course).

Bob does a git push (~ svn commit).

Alice can't push, as first she has to merge the server version (it's
like when you have to svn up before svn commit).

At this point all the VCSes will generate a conflict ATM because the
Last modified line is modified from A to 1) B (Bob) and 2) C (Alice),
which is a conflict.

The nice thing is that with git, it would be possible to handle this
scenario. The only requirement is a script that takes 3 parameters: the
original version, Bob's one and Alice's one. (3 file paths.) The result
is written to Bob's version.

Now my question: I know git, but I don't know too much about translation
stuff (I'm just a user in the translation world), but I suspect that
such a script is fairly easy to do, provided that what tools are
available already for po files. :)

Can someone please help me what tool could be used to do something like
this? The only tool I know myself is msgmerge, but that takes a
*template* and the old po file (resulting in an updated po file), not 3
po files. Possibly in case of merging po files, you don't need the
original version at all, I guess.

A nice thing would be to make difference in case really just trivial
stuff conflicts (which is not a real conflict in the po file, like the
last modified line) and when we really have a conflict like foo
(original version) is changed to bar (Bob) and baz (Alice).

Thanks!

There is an easy solution for this: ask your users to commit before they
update. The problem is that git expects that local changes are committed

Yes and no. :-) That's why I wrote that list. AFAIK cvs/svn does not
support so; those backends just ignore the author info. Other systems
have a --author/--user switch and make use of it.

 * Does it work if commit rights are given to an anonymous user? In this
case we don't have a username or email address. Obviously we can't
fabricate the information - I just want to know that we don't get
 unexpected results in this case.

I did not check this case explicitly.

commitpofile() in Pootle/projects.py unconditionally used
session.username already, so I *think* I did not introduce a new
problem, but other parts of the same file check if session is None; so I
guess it will not work.

BTW, how one tracks the source of problematic translations if anonymous
users can commit? Sounds like a technically possible, but you never
want this case to me.

Right. the work-tree/git-dir switches allow out-of-tree git commands

 C)

I think the situation where compabitility with git=1.5.2 makes sense is
Debian stable. It has Pootle 0.10.1. It just does not have Git support.
If a sysadmin decides to install newer a never (it was called
unofficial) version of Pootle, then I think it is not that hard to
install a newer version of Git as well.

I think if we want to support Debian stable, then we have to support
1.4.4.4, since that's the official version Debian comes with. There are
major changes between 1.4.x and 1.5.x, and - to be honest - I'm not too
motivated to write code for 1.5.x.

So I would vote for C).

Just my two cents.

what is the version of git you're using?

i guess the server runs debian which ships some ancient git version by

The translations for the interface is obtained through the translation
project called pootle as shipped with the Pootle software. It is a way
to show people where the translation files can be, what an installed
 project can look like, etc.

If people don't want people to fiddle with the interface translations,
they can just not give translation rights for those projects. Otherwise
I'm not sure why somebody would not add the Pootle project to their
 server.

I think the question was a bit something else: He registered on our
server, selected the Vietnamese as the language of the user interface,
but it's still English. I checked that the Pootle po files are there,
and I don't have too much idea why the user interface is still English
for him.

I reproduced the same with Hungarian, so probably the issue is not
translation-specific.

Re: [translate-pootle] [PATCH] Support for the Mercurial version control system

2008-03-27 Thread Miklos Vajna
On Thu, Mar 27, 2008 at 06:25:51AM +0100, Lars Kruse [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
I am not used to mercurial, so I just downloaded a mercurial repository as an
 example:
  hg init test
  cd test
  hg pull http://selenic.com/repo/hg-stable
  hg update

i would recommend using hg clone url, that will make hg push work
without any additional url. (and Pootle uses this feature)

Then I switched to the translate directory and tested the getcleanfile
 function:
  python storage/versioncontrol/__init__.py SOME_DIR/test/mercurial/repo.py

 The resulting error message was:
  abort: mercurial/repo.py not under root

This problem seems to be fixed after replacing self.location_rel with
 self.location_abs in getcleanfile in hg.py.

So I guess, that mercurial needs the absolute file location (in contrast to
 git
and darcs). But I could not verify this for the update and the commit
function in hg.py, since I don't have a real repository for testing.

Could you check, if everything works after replacing the two
 occurrences of location_rel with location_abs?

just checked, hg always requires an absolute pathname. i did not notice
this as the repo was inside the pootle dir. fortunatelly it's
consistent, so i've fixed update() as well.

I noticed another thing while going through the code: in commit the location
of the specific file is not used. I guess, this results in a commit of the
complete local working copy, or? This behaviour would be different from the
other interfaces (svn, cvs, ...) .Could you check that, too, please?

oh, my bad. sure, it was a shortcoming on my side, fixed.

patch - against my previous one - attached.

hmm. i think it's good to force users to commit manually, so that you

who committed for example a mistake. if you do anonymous commits, then
you can't blame anybody when a bug is found.

you may want to start pootle without forking to the background so that

two hints:

- if 'nothing happens', try running 'git add foo.po; git commit -m some

- if the commit shows up in git log but not in the repo repo then try
  running 'git push' manually

in general, if you wonder how such a remote repo looks like, have a look

Re: [translate-pootle] patch proposal: simplify codeofversioncontrol.py

hi,

I am not so sure about this change: IMO it would not work, if the real

in /var/lib/pootle (e.g. the files are just symlinked). Or did I
 understand it wrong?

you are right, then what about using self.root_dir instead of
os.getcwd()? (see the attached patch)

I just tried to use a different approach: the --repodir argument for
darcs. I typed the following command:
 [EMAIL PROTECTED]:~/other-sources/pootle-trunk$ darcs record
 --repodir=/home/lars/other-sources/examples/cabal
 /home/lars/other-sources/examples/cabal/runTests.sh
 (everything should be one line)

 the output was the following:
 start
 Recording changes in ./runTests.sh:

No changes in selected files or directories!
 /stop

 This should be ok, right?

no, that's the problem. if you use an absolute path, then darcs says 'no
changes' even if there are any, so pressing the 'commit' button will
result in nothing

Maybe it is possible just to add the --repodir argument wherever
possible and thus continue using absolute filenames?
Could you please try this? (doing something real with the repodir argument
 and absolute paths)

$ dr rec -a --repodir /home/vmiklos/scm/svn/translate/Pootle
/home/vmiklos/scm/svn/translate/Pootle/po/pootle/hu/jToolkit.po
Recording changes in ./po/pootle/hu/jToolkit.po:

Ok, if you don't want to record anything, that's fine!

^ so just adding --repodir won't allow using absolute pathnames
