I'll borrow the description from www.outreachy.org: "Outreachy provides three-month internships for people from groups traditionally underrepresented in tech. Interns are paid a stipend of $5,500 and have a $500 travel stipend available to them. Interns work remotely with mentors from Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) communities on projects ranging from programming, user experience, documentation, illustration and graphical design, to data science. Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy sponsors or in jobs that use the FOSS skills they learned during their internship.
Outreachy internships are open internationally to women (cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people. Internships are also open to residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are Black/African American, Hispanic/Latin@, Native American/American Indian, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander. We are planning to expand the program to more participants from underrepresented backgrounds in the future." This year the Free Software Foundation participates for the first time, by sponsoring ONE internship to work on ONE OF THREE possible topics: "Fix bugs and freedom issues in Trisquel GNU/Linux" "Fix bugs in the Free Software Directory" "Updating the Email Self-Defense Guide" Only one of the three internships will happen, the choice will be made by the FSF based on the merits of the applicants. You can see more (and other internship options) at: https://www.outreachy.org/apply/project-selection/ Note that the details of each internship are only open to people that register and complete the eligibility checklist. As a general description, the work would focus on writing "package helpers" to fix freedom and privacy issues, as well as improving the documentation. More info on helpers, and examples at: https://devel.trisquel.info/trisquel/package-helpers Applicants will be expected to complete a few of what would be their daily tasks (in the Trisquel case, writing helper scripts) before the application deadline, and then the Foundation will decide which internship would be carried on. The internship period would be May 14 to August 14 2018.
