You should recommend her Debian. Or even better, install it yourself. If she

Having looked at the downsides of SSDs I'm no longer sure I want one. If
they can die without warning, that really puts me off
HDDs too do that all the time. Backups are your only salvation. I lost my

Hello,
To be honest, I do not know how to manually set up a new wireless connection
in Trisquel. When I use Windows, all I have to do is select a Wireless
connection from a list, enter the Wifi password and let the computer connect
automatically. I assumed that Trisquel will be able to
You could compile a kernel without pae and replace the kernel in the .iso
image with it (or to be exact, make a new .iso with the same content except
for the kernel). The kernel in the image seems to be 3.0.0-17-generic for 32
bit. The config item is X86_PAE under processor type and
So, to put everything in a nutshell:
Almost everyone agreed with my idea of avoiding a cold turkey ( I stated
this, using other words, in my original post).
I considered giving her a trisquel usb stick for quite a while, but I
abandoned this idea because I can't imagine her being able to
I thought so, too... oh man!
30 € for nothing!
Backups are critical. The question is how frequently do you want to be in a
situation where you actually need that backup? Chances are you will see at
least some down time with any hard disk crash and backup system.
I remember that I used my iPod *touch* (3rd generation) with Rhythmbox (as an
iTunes substitute) with no problems.
Try that program, if you haven't already.
(Also, if you end up not being able to syncronize your iPod in GNU/Linux...
You can always just sell it on eBay and get instead a
Could not start My computer this morning, I think BIOS has died, is there a

Are you sure the processor has a 32-bit architecture (it is pretty rare
nowadays)? Even if it is so (i.e., even if you cannot take a 64-bit ISO), I
do not understand why PAE would prevent Trisquel to boot. It should boot with
only 4 GB of available memory. What makes you think the issue has

Is it a laptop? Maybe your battery is dead and you need to replace it.

Fortune of the day: You can create your own opportunities
Kernels compiled for PAE do not boot on CPUs without PAE, it's not
related to the amount of installed memory. This feature has a use on
systems with less than 4 GiB of memory:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NX_bit needs PAE on 32-bit x86 systems.

Having googled I'm hoping it is just a dead battery, going to replace it and
give it a try.
To All,
Thank you for your explanations and suggestions. I shall consider buying a
Wireless USB Adapter. It is a pity that the transition from Windows 7 to
GNU/Linux is not as smooth as I expected. I am afraid that hardware issues
like this might discourage some people from switching to
One question about jamendo:
I would like to make a donation to the artists; what is the easiest way to do
so?
I don't see any easy-to-use contrib system, which is, actually, a shame..
Yes, the Trisquel 6 Mini live CD requires PAE as well.
Now I can install, I am using the netinstall method of installing Ubuntu
12.04 on non-PAE supported computers. Is is possible to switch from the
Ubuntu repo to the Trisquel one?
I don't know how to compile a kernel, but am willing to learn. :)

In that case, see

I made a little tutorial on the subject here

Would this guide compile a non-PAE requiring kernel?
I asking about the lifetime of HIGH-END SSD drives, such as the ones you
sell, and not the low-end ones. And it appears that vPro technology can be
disabled in the BIOS, according to Intel themselves at

Which kernel should I download to put in the install CD?
Could be a component failing in the laptop. I had a machine that the ram got
knocked out of its socket and that kept the computer from passing the POST.
Yes, but even if it does work with all cards (without any blobs), let's be
careful when using the Nouveau driver.
Since, the main reason why I haven't installed Trisquel on my main computer
yet, is because the Nouveau driver is known to overheat my particular card...
1. I can't answer the longevity question for high end SSD drives. I can say
low end SSD drives create a significant number of RMA issues though. I can
also say there is data from a few different sources on the web. Just look at
user reviews for different drives vs the prices. You can also
What file should I extract out of the completed .deb and put in the Trisquel

Ruben (quidam) know about this issue? Is good one iso image with non-PAE for
easy installation.
Compile kernel is not easy for a beginner.
At least in my case, a Pentium M processor has PAE, it just doesn't report it
in /proc/cpuinfo, I found a tool called fake-pae
https://launchpad.net/%7Eprof7bit/+archive/fake-pae that adds the PAE flag to
/proc/cpuinfo so the system can be updated to the latest version that
requires PAE.
Having taken a second look at the Gazelle Professional, I have found they
