A few months ago, I tried to use the GNU PPA,[1] but found that it broke my
packages, so I removed it. Just today, I found that I actually have software
updated from that repository still causing breakage. In this case, it's
libidn11; the newer version being installed is stopping me from

You didn't use ppa-purge, which is commonly used in ubuntu, don't know about
trisquel.
Just today,
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I'm going to buy the Asus
F2A85-M Mainbourd as it is suggested by the FSF. Do you know if the procedure
of flashing the eeprom on this board is similar to what you described for the
thinkpad x60?
Perhaps this could be fixed simply by installing a later kernel—I recently
reinstalled Trisquel, and have gone from a 3.8 to a 3.2. How do I do this? I
added jxself's repositories using the instructions on his site, but I can't
figure out how to install the kernel.
on jxself's site, that you linked above, read the Short-term or long-term
support? section with the chart.
You can compile linux-libre from source. On my Core 2 Duo (running 32-bit)
with 2 GB of RAM, it took about an hour.
Wiki page: http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/compiling-gnu-linux-libre-kernel
I've recently read some news which say that the Linux kernel (non-free
kernel) version 3.14 will have support for the kexec() call which subverts
the UEFI Secure Boot.
The news article is in Brazilian Portuguese, it's under a free license, and
can be found here:
I hope it will be possible to include this in free Linux kernels, because I
am afraid it will be more difficult in the future to find motherboards that
let me disable Secure Boot.
Good things are coming from South America these days :)
Installing the new kernel didn't work. And I can't even edit its boot
options; if I press e it simply asks for a username and password, and then
returns to the main screen.
I took a picture of the output without the quiet splash for 3.2.0-57, and it
is attached. I can see part of the
It appears that they have supplied a script used to download the scripts for

interesting. it seems armworm does get this password? i use netinst to
install and don't have this /etc/grub.d/01_PASSWORD file... good to know
about. yet another reason i won't be using the default installer.
Interesting, the image shows correctly in gThumb, but not in Abrowser.
Perhaps either gThumb or Abrowser are or aren't loading some kind of metadata
which tells them in which orientation the image is supposed to be displayed.
Best regards, ADFENO.
Have a nice day.
I don't trust PPAs normally, but this one was linked to by the GNU Project
website.[1]

IF, ppa-purge is available - you could re-add the PPA then remove it using
ppa-purge, to get back all packages to the default repos version.
Thanks! That's just what I needed. Worked
I have a Notebook with 4G ram and I heard very often that the swap partition
is pretty useless. If you don't agree with this (I haven't any reference and
maybe I heard false claims) then please explain why.
Anyway, the actual reason for thinking about it is my plan to create an

if you use hibernate, you need swap (equal to RAM)... if not, go ahead - i
still don't think it's a good idea. Just remove/comment the entry in fstab,
then you might want to restart, to verify everything is working and that
free shows no swap.
How can I change the colour of the panel text in XFCE? I suspected it was
somewhere in /usr/share/themes, but couldn't find anything there.
Not sure the take away of having no swap, but I found this option on a DDG
search: https://www.antagonism.org/privacy/encrypted-swap-linux.shtml
You can use swapoff (possibly with argument -a) command to stop using swap
temporarily. If you remove the swap line from fstab and restart your machine,
I believe you can safely remove the partition.
Your system might respond faster after removing the swap partition (this

Other than for hibernation, swap space is kicked in when your RAM gets used
up.
You'll be fine as long as you don't do anything that causes your 4 GB of RAM
to fill up, like graphics or video editing or genomic sequence analysis.
BUMP! This is a serious problem.
I'm having trouble with netcat again.
nc mail.mydomain.ca gives me this message:

I'm using a wired connection, which I is eth0 on the server pc. I see the lo

The IP address is next to inet, then brd, then another IP address without
any /, then scope global eth0. All on the same line. I guess use the
first one
Why are the following add-ons not available in the plugin repository, and is
