The releases from 4.0 to 5.0 looked really slick due to it using Gnome 2 and the theme developers had the freedom to fully customize it. I really dug how the panel looked (almost transparent but not fully) and how uniform everything was under the silver colored theme.

Like some have mentioned earlier, using MATE lets us have that Gnome 2 customization again so minor modifications of the pre 5.5 themes shouldn't be an issue. I have become a fan of Unity, but I understand why MATE is important as it brings a classic look and does not require hardware acceleration from the video card.
