This worked. Thanks so much! I've been very impressed by the responsiveness
of this community.
*facepalm* Do as jxself says. I don't know how I missed this solution.
That's not necessary, and improper because it's being done behind the package
manager's back so it'll never get updates. The proper way is to use the
package manager to install the package called open-ath9k-htc-firmware.
Do you have htc_9271.fw in your /lib/firmware folder? If not, see if you can
copy it from the live system on the USB drive to the /lib/firmware folder on
your ThinkPad.
I recently installed Trisquel on my ThinkPad x60. Since the wifi card is
nonfree and will not work with Trisquel, I got a USB wifi adapter from
ThinkPenguin. I tested it while running Trisquel from a USB drive without
installing, and Trisquel recognized the device immediately and I was able
Fixed. Thanks everyone for your help!
I'm now having another issue with detection of my wifi adapter. Since it's
unrelated to my initial problem I'm starting a new thread. If 1 topic/thread
isn't protocol for this forum let me know and I'll stop doing it.
At the login screen, isn't there a way to select another session? An icon
after you select or type your user name maybe?
I deselected "triskel," selected "trisquel," ran, and restarted my computer.
The login screen was different, but after logging in everything else is still
kubuntu/KDE Plasma. Is there another step? Thanks.
Thank you! So it's because I selected "Triskel desktop environment?" Would
selecting "Trisquel desktop environment" have given me what I was using when
I tried out Trisquel from a USB drive before deciding to install? Will
installing GNOME and removing KDE give me exactly the same result as
Maybe you installed 'triskel desktop' instead of 'trisquel desktop'. You can
select the right desktop via tasksel.

It was suggested in a previous thread that I use the text installer because
the graphical installer kept crashing. The text installer did not crash, but
when the installation was complete and I rebooted it appeared to have
installed kubuntu instead of Trisquel, so apparently I did something

Thanks for your response.
I'm trying the text installer, and it seems to want to download the installer
components from a mirror. Because my wifi card is proprietary, I need to use
my external wifi adapter to access the internet. While Trisquel had no
problem detecting it automatically

That looks fantastic! I agree with you, as cool as Youtube-DL is - the
terminal keeps a lot of people away from it.
I forgot to mention, I can easily re-connect by disable and then re-enable
the connection from the manager.
I've been testing Trisquel 8 Alpha for a couple of days and everything seemed
fine until yesterday when I got disconnected from the Internet (and it keep
happening from time to time - could be hours between them). Maybe not a big
deal, but the reason why I'm pointing this out is because this
