Please do not advertise non-free distros here.

Welcome to freedom!
Linux is a kernel.
The operating system is GNU/Linux.
https://gnu.org/gnu/why-gnu-linux.html
Debian is kind of a gray area, it has a free kernel and separates proprietary
stuff in a separate repository so it is possible to run free debian. However
if somebody says they run debian it's not immediately clear what they mean.
Glad to hear these guys are planning a free version.
Does the wifi work otherwise? What's wrong with the shutdown?
Yeah, that is a problem. Only the FSF approved distros are guaranteed to be
free. One component that you can find in most non-free distros is the vanilla
Linux kernel with blobs and all or you they might have a single repo with
libre and non-free all mixed up...
On the other hand you see projects making hundreds of thousands of dollars on
crowd sourcing web sites. Of course they have a lot of traffic...
I guess it's a matter of engaging your audience. Not that I claim to know how
to do it. Trisquel has had some success for example. Also, paypal
There is always the possibility to swap hard disks. I.e. Install Trisquel on
a disk and put it in that machine.
If you talk about copyright infringement, call it copyright infringement.
Please.
Did you copy pasta that command or type it and mess up the number of the
ampersands? (&)
Copy pasta is particularly tasty in GNU/Linux where it's enough to highlight
a passage to select it and then use "middle button" to paste it.
Do you too see that error message or just have an issue with LO?
If the splash is giving you trouble, you can use the --nologo parameter to
skip it.
Here are some comments on SBCs

What's in that file? Compare with grub.cfg.
I think it's worth filing a bug.
Yes they are slower than newest machines. They might still boot faster,
thanks to libreboot. (proprietary stock bioses are notoriously slow) :) What
kind of use is the machine for?
Try
ln -s /boot/grub/grub.cfg /boot/grub/libreboot_grub.cfg
and reboot
You might want to check if you have multiple browser profiles. It like
upstream sometimes does interesting things on its own...abrowser

Thank you! I agree it's a good thing to be transparent as possible when it
comes to the donations.
Here's a few tricks
https://trisquel.info/en/wiki/formatting-trisquel-forum
It's a wiki, you can add it.
If you use gksudo instead of sudo with graphical apps, you avoid this
problem.
Do you run graphical apps with sudo?
But you can 'trust but verify'!
That will probably work.
Have you tried searching this forum, this is something that has been
discussed quite a few times already.
Perhaps some of your addons in interfering? Have you tried that on a fresh
profile?
Synaptic is so much better than the add/remove thingy.
CyanogenMod contains proprietary libraries, so meh.
You're welcome to. But it might not be a great idea to tell newcomers to do
alike. They might not like it when their computer becomes unusable. And they
probably would blame Trisquel or even GNU/Linux for it.
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RootSudo#Graphical_sudo
You're welcome.
The addon signing business is originating from upstream, Mozilla. It's
something Trisquel might (have to) deal with. Not nice to have such scary
"proceed with caution" warning when in fact the addon is safe and official...
Do you have space in root?df -h
Just try things. Sometimes it's not intuitive, like this time. :)
Best to use gksudo with graphical apps, categorically. So
gksudo synaptic
Right, good point! Sounds like they're interested in pursuing goals beyond
the CPU as well.
Didn't you have a nice video about the gameplay somewhere?
Different arch, you're amd64 and he's talking about i386.
Thanks, I think it's an interesting project. However I was saddened to read
"Although LowRISC is trying to make a fully open SoC, it won’t be able to
completely avoid proprietary code from the first version. Alex Bradbury told

If you can't or won't purchase online, make a Trisquel live USB and march to
your local computer shop and boot off it and then try everything you require.
> I always have a error to compile the package
What did the error message say, exactly?!
Perhaps you could investigate Linux Containers?
Welcome!
1) It's a window manager (the wm in the name). If you've installed the
package, try logging out and see if you can change the session there.
2) There is an update manager somewhere.
Watch out, certain printers require a binary blob with hplip. Sometimes it's
required for all functionality, sometimes any...
Tell us the exact error message. Another reason to use the bittorrent
protocol is you can't get a corrupted download with it as every piece is
checked in the process. (Unless the original is corrupted, of course! :D )
Good to hear you're working on the plumbing!
Are you saying I'm lying? Or perhaps I can't enter the command or interpret
the output?
And sometimes the drivers may be free but functionality would require a
firmware that is not free...
In such cases if the hardware does not function at all the only way is to get
another piece that can be operated in freedom or if the hardware works partly
one has to decide whether it is
I don't quite understand the question but modprobe module adds a mod and
modprobe -r module removes it (as long as it's not in use).
Also, if you cat the file a few times apart, what kind of values does it
contain?
The problem is the intel wifi. That will not work with free software. You can
get an internal or external replacement. See e.g. https://fsf.org/ryf
Usually you read documentation that comes with the source, often in an
INSTALL or README file. That will tell you.
(The GNU standard is just running ./configure and make when in the source
directory. This works often.)
A handy way to get what you need for compiling is to install the
What exactly broke?
I think this is a great link illustrating the difference and why it's
important to root for free software.

This is bit too vague.
Test, no preview
You forgot the second dd from that command.
This would probably be best.
pv bigfile.iso | dd of=/dev/targetdevice options go here optionally
Probably not any more than any other wifi.
You see the data rates on that page. They assume you have 100% signal
strength and other optimal conditions, so in reality you'll be below that.
Yes, that's it.
Can you use a vga cable?
Test, with preview
Full of blobs, not recommended.
Filed a bug for you, [#16657]
Yeah. You're welcome.
I believe we're talking about this guide [1] virtual terminals here. (nothing
to do with OS/hardware virtualization)

Have you tried "...removing /etc/init/tty3.conf ... /etc/init/tty6.conf,

You get one by default with Trisquel.
Here's one way to change it.

But how do freely licensed projects ever become better than their proprietary
counterparts? Because free software advocates work on them to make it so.
Open source users probably will do nothing to aid the said software until it
is better than the proprietary alternative.
Using the words
Looks like the root partition (the very first line) is full. Run sudo apt-get
clean for starters, that will remove the APT cache. (downloaded packages)
Besides that you probably have quite a few kernels, you only need 1. They're

FAQs are common, dispelling myths not so much.
I think these are good candidates

I think this is a worthwhile effort, even though machines have become so much
better at idling. Still a shame to have so many so powerful boxes just
sitting there.
It's good to strive
The documentation of non-free distros will only confuse as they use Linux
with blobs.
I'm not sure but I think the non-ancient broadcoms will not work.
Besides that you can't even boot the rasp pi in freedom.

I know nothing about Haiku but I do know that the goal of the GNU project was
something that was step by step certainly possible, despite opposite views at
the very beginning of the project. (And boom, mere 9 years later Stallman and

Thanks for sharing!
Looks like the next upstream LTS version Trisquel 8 will be based on has a
lot of wayland and mir packages so that probably will be included.
Open a terminal and inputwhich netsurfThat will give you the full path, put
that the the preferred browser thing or in the variable.
Chrome is proprietary, so it will suck anywhere.
Trisquel is gratis and more importantly free software. If you find malware
lets us know. I haven't seen any.
gksudo sets proper environment to avoid issues. Some graphical programs will
work with regular sudo but it's a bit of a russian roulette. Once things go
south you cannot login anymore for example, more than once case on this very
forum.
Yes, at least some of them.
Have you tried unblacklisting the radeon driver?
Here's howto

And then boot and admire the native resolution.

This used to be so but no longer true. I've got an ancient ATI card and it
says yes for me.
virtualbox requires a non-free compiler since version 4.2 so use something
else like kvm.
I agree GNU/Linux is a great collaboration. Are you aware of these links?

Regarding the lingo, looks like manual page for chvt calls ttys "virtual

I guess we can all call the what ever we like, nobody will understand
anyways! :)
Familiar with these? (the story too is pretty amusing)

Do you have an intel wifi?
Try the older kernel next, apparently 3.10 or earlier.
Yes. It's Linux minus the blobs.
It may work with Linux as that kernel contains binary only blobs. Trisquel
uses Linux-libre which consists only of proper free software.
You probably need to get another wifi card that can be operated in freedom,
e.g. https://www.fsf.org/resources/hw/endorsement/respects-your-freedom
Does this help?

One sure fire way is to yank out that useless card.
