I think their concern is scientific integrity, which is understandable. Plus, academic institutions have gotten in trouble before over falsified research.

Oops, I had a mind lapse for a second there regarding the versioning. They should hurry up as Ubuntu 20.04 comes out next month! As for the CPU, I built a new dev machine with a Ryzen 3700X back in July.

I too was wondering this after seeing a Linus Tech Tips video on the topic, then I realised that a Core 2 Duo from 2008 and no GPU is gonna make no difference. BTW Trisquel 8 is based on 16.04 not 18.04, you're thinking of 9. Also sweet 16-core rig you have there :)
