On Librebooted computers, only dd works.

Agree!
Since apparently this is caused by a hardware defect, the only thing to do is
work around it. I suppose the driver ought to be implementing such
workarounds, but I digress...
For Doom, the solution is simple: just don't use any any hardware
acceleration or OpenGL. It should be able to run

I have that on my 7300gt(I don't use it). I remember, that switching off some
graphics effects, will remove glitches in Nexuiz.
Xonotic has software rendering using vid_soft 1, but it is very slow.
The libre drivers included in Linux are the official drivers. And, for the
record, if a driver isn't included in Linux and isn't particularly new,
that's generally because the driver is proprietary. Intel doesn't develop
proprietary drivers for its integrated GPUs.

Here's my cpu and graphics card specs (mine's a low-end intergrated graphics

Yes, there is a device that doesn't yet work under free code, "Network

I did it through here: http://trisquel.info/en/wiki/update-linux-libre-kernel
And there is still graphical glitches. Can i use the official drivers (if
they are free)?
Such artifacts are known bugs on older Intel graphics adapters, there's not
much to do, but you can try updating the kernel.

Let me confirm that this happened to me as well. Exactly the same symptoms.
I assumed the computer itself was going bad since it's 12 years old and has
been heat-freezing on occasion. I decided just to reinstall rather than
CHROOT and update/upgrade etc. When I was ready to

anyone out there know how I can approach installing this in a
That website is recommending Radeon cards, none of which have working 3-D
hardware acceleration at all without proprietary blobs. I would be suspicious
of its Nvidia suggestions too, given this.
You right, all scores at that website did with 2. kernel.
I'm using gtx460oc, not perfect but works flawlessly with low resolutions for
me. But not perfect. I have 7300gt and 520gt too. I tested Intel's HD4000,
and this works much better.
not true? lol, the whole reason you are using debian is because your
proprietary stuff doesn't work on trisquel... imo, you are the proof itself
as to why debian is not 100% libre. You don't have to add any 3rd party
repos for your proprietary drivers.
Yes it's eventually a bit confusing because i used the word "install".
The only thing you need to do is extract the archiv:
$tar -xvJf tor-browser-linux64-4.5.2_en-US.tar.xz
Make sure to write the right name for the .tar.xz file
After you untar the archiv change in the new directory
lol, I like how legimet caught you in a lie already in this threadcan't
say i'm surprised.
I stand by everything I say, sometimes the truth hurts.
Any good graphics cards that will run on a Free OS? like the nvidia cards
with Noveau for example?
but related to all things "install" and run tor-browser the right way i
really recommend to read the documentation of the torproject:

Lola - just download the ISO and dd a USB stick and restart your lappy. Tails
should work just fine. As far as the non-free firmware in the linux kernel,
as far as I know, if your lappy doesn't need it you won't be using it.
Example - if your wifi card works with free firmware and doesn't
to be user friendly.

I running gtx460oc right now, with 1580.000fps score(420.000fps before
updated drivers). Runs flawlessly 3d games, at 800x600, but bad 1024x768 or
more, all at 100hz(doesn't detect more).
Yes it does, unlike trisquel which won't let you. Whether you consider that
a "bug or not, I consider that a security benefit.
I don't know why you think this particular Linux-libre bug prevents execution
of proprietary code: replace existing libre firmware. Heck, I'll give you a
real-world example: there's an old, proprietary firmware blob that can be
loaded onto the Atheros devices Think Penguin sells, and
Personally, I not recommend use encryption if you not REALLY need it, if you

Since the install is recent, and there is no new documents lost, I may well
just re-install - unless I hear of a compelling opinion not to.
I will first try to follow Magic's suggestions.
Bummer to have to reinstall it all over again, update again, and lose my
preferences. Trisquel has been
I'm wondering if these complications are connected to disk encryption? Maybe
I should skip encryption for now...?
Magic Banana's method can't work because of the need to start the
"start-tor-browser.desktop" - file from inside the "$HOME/tor-browser_en-US/"
- directory and his solution relies on the full path.
Just look above again and you'll see what the start-script does.
The xdg-settings part should
I was able to run Xonotic at its lowest quality settings fine with the Intel
GMA I had. Of course, you say "with all effects and high resolutions", but
that's a really high threshold you're setting; a lot of people will be fine
with much less.
For the record, this was the laptop in
"if your wifi card works with free firmware and doesn't require the non-free
one, then you won't be using the non-free, but the free firmware."
I'm not sure this is right. Tails is based on Debian and, for the ath9k_htc,
that distro's wiki page recommends a non-free firmware. It then
Intel GMA like 950 (in my laptops, macbook 2,1, x60s) works fine, no blobs,
but no muscle to handle 3d games with all effects and high resolutions, and
very limited graphic memory(no gddr here).
Intel GMA and HD I tryed, all of them working with free software, some Nvidia
card work very
I believe you'll find the way to fix this problem in the following message:
https://trisquel.info/en/forum/strange-grub-behaviour-trisquel-7#comment-57418
There are older Intel integrated GPUs that are perfectly fine, as far back as
10 years ago. Intel GMA, for instance, which my first laptop (from 2007) had.
All of them worked fully with entirely libre software until recently when
blobs started being required for certain features to work.
Hello,
I had a Windows Vista install on my laptop on the first partition (50GB).
Then I installed trisquel. Now when I try to boot it from trisquel it asks
for a user name and password. I input the username and password (for
trisquel) and it dumps me back at the grub menu. Very frustrating.
Thanks, Joe.
I'll try re-booting several times.
Were you booting from install disk when things went back to normal?
- Zem
Vista not being able to boot is a good thing: http://badvista.fsf.org/. Is
there anything you need it for? If so, we can help you find free replacements.
Trisquel informs too that they are missing non-free drivers/firmware/modules
(with my USB WiFi adapter for exemple I have a message like [XX.XX]Can't
load firmware rtl)
There was one GNU-compatible real-time kernel released under the GPLv2-
RTLinux. However, the website's been down for some time now. I think the
project's been abandoned. There is an FTP repository from which you can
download the source for RTLinux (here: ftp://ftp.rtlinux-gpl.org/pub/rtlinux),
Are you kidding me?
I don't even get to play SuperTuxKart. My laptop can't handle it without the
blobs for 3d acceleration. And I love that game.
When you try to use a 3d game, and you don't have blobs installed, will the
software automatically change to CPU, or will it try to use the
What I am trying to know is

I know Tails is not completely free software, so I will understand if I get

Teelinome: sorry that didn't work :(
I suggested that procedure because that is what I did some time ago when I
had some audio issues (which I then solved by completely purging pulse
audio). I needed a decent audio control applet and I installed and made

Thanks for your reply anyway.
From the looks of it, I think blocking port 53 should be enough. BUT not
sure.
I have successfully switched to XFCE a month ago. It was indeed hard,
and I indeed had to keep an eye on what I was doing (and to tell you the
truth, I almost messed everything up).
I also managed to remove most parts of GNOME. But the main place where I
got some lead as to what to keep in order
Does that apply only to Magic Banana's method, or yours too?
Also, does that solve the "problem" of using Torbirdy, and when you click a
link inside email it will open in standard browser, thus revealing your
identity?
Much better playing 3d games on desktop computer. I have no problems with
gtx460oc, and latest updated drivers. No blobs.
Yeah, that's what I meant: it's not going to be fast enough to be acceptable
without hardware acceleration.
Don't be :)
I am just hoping someone will actually help me too.
I am glad your issue is now solved :)
LOL :-P

Thank you all. But before trying to configure it, I have some questions.
I have the Tor browser already downloaded, so I guess I do not have to
install anything, do I? (I ask because of step 1)
What is that .desktop thing? I cannot find that file.
You can do a tcpdump on Port 53
# tcpdump -n -s 1500 -i eth0 udp port 53
Ex:I opened Synaptic Package Manager & clicked on Reload
root@Host-001:/home/oio# tcpdump -n -s 1500 -i eth0 udp port 53
tcpdump: verbose output suppressed, use -v or -vv for full protocol decode
listening on eth0,
If there's no hardware acceleration, there's no hardware acceleration,
period. Games like SuperTuxKart run like molasses in this case because they
need hardware acceleration to run decently.
I think avoiding OpenGL can help, though. On one of our old computers, it was
the case that
It worked, thank you for providing the solution!
Tried to install tcpdump and synaptic warned me that the package couldn't be
authenticated!
Could it mean a problem with Trisquel repo??
