[Trisquel-users] My older X200 was unusable due to cigarette odor; no response on inquiry about the odor

My T400 from Minifree arrived on june 27th.

I placed my order on the june 1st.

I'm glad your order worked out. I ordered an X200 from Gluglug.org.uk
(which I understand is Minifree's previous name) in 2005 and it arrived
reeking of cigarette smoke.

On 2015-03-07 I emailed i...@gluglug.co.uk (which was the email address on
the status emails sent to me telling me about the delivery of the laptop
and the laptop's tracking number) asking about what to do about this:

===begin===
I received the laptop, thanks for shipping it with such good wrapping.

I was not prepared for the computer to have a profound odor of cigarette
smoke even before I could turn it on; unwrapping the doubly-wrapped laptop
revealed the odor. I suggest you tell prospective buyers that there will be
this odor with their computers. I found that the odor was so objectionable
the odor gave me a headache just to be around the computer. I had to put
the computer elsewhere outside of my ability to smell the ugly odor.

I'm ready to support software freedom and pay for skilled hackers to
prepare computers so users can buy something free and ready to use, but I
want to breathe clean air at the same time.

Do you have any suggestions for how to get rid of this odor?
===end===

To date I've received no reply. I'm hesitant to order another computer
(such as a T400) as a replacement because I don't know where the cigarette
odor came from and I think I've been patient enough waiting for a reply.

The computer still bears a cigarette odor, not quite as strong as when it
arrived because I've let the computer sit in an area where there is moving
air but not near me. But the computer is not usable as a laptop with this
foul odor. I consider the money spent on this to be a waste.

Does anyone have any tips on removing cigarette odor from the computer?

Does anyone else's fully-free, FSF Respects-Your-Freedom certified computer
smell like anything but a computer (plastic mainly)?

Thanks.

I am getting out of ideas :/ specially because you say it works on other

This is weird. I hope that a fresh install will solve it then :/

Or maybe someone else could join and suggest something else??

The connection issue looks separate from the missing free firmware. Can you
log in the terminal you get by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 (or Ctrl+Alt+F2 or ... or
Ctrl+Alt+F6)? If so, you can execute the following command:

$ sudo apt-get install open-ath9k-htc-firmware

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)

2017-07-17 Thread mcz

Sure, I just added exec i3.

But my original one is like this:
#!/bin/sh
# /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc
#
# global xinitrc file, used by all X sessions started by xinit (startx)
# invoke global X session script
. /etc/X11/Xsession
/usr/lib/polkit-gnome/polkit-gnome-authentication-agent-1 # &
exec dbus-launch ck-launch-session i3
[[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
#export SUDO_ASKPASS=/bin/dpass.sh sudo -A $(dmenu_path | dmenu)
#export SUDO_ASKPASS="$HOME/bin/dpass.sh" sudo -A $(dmenu_path | dmenu)
# Start the window manager:
#if [ -z "$DESKTOP_SESSION" -a -x /usr/bin/ck-launch-session ]; then
#  exec ck-launch-session dbus-launch --exit-with-session /usr/bin/i3
#else
#  exec /usr/bin/i3
#fi
# The x11 line was already there.
# The lxpolkit line is supposed to launch lxpolkit on startup.
# The i3 line was supposed to solve the issue.
# The last one works, it's to launch the config file of urxvt.

Keep in mind that I'm sure it works both on other machines and on this same
machine, but when the partition wasn't encrypted (meaning there was 3
partitions: for /, for /home and for /swap).

I don't have xorg-xinit, but I installed xorg --no-install-recommends, which
also worked just fine when the partition wasn't encrypted (meaning there was
3 partitions: for /, for /home and for /swap).
I do have both startx and xinit, and I don't remember on other installs if I
had the .xinitrc provided as default.

I can try another WM or even a DE. But really, I see no difference with the
working install and this one besides encryption, and a slightly different
partitioning scheme.

Up to this point, we eliminated:
* config files (ownership and permissions, disabling some of them like bashrc
and xinitrc)
* completely removing i3 an launching startx gives me a tty with a different
font, and the keyboard behaves just the same (inactive, numpad led always on
or off, depending on how it was befre launching startx)

* reinstalling xorg. Maybe purge xorg wasn't enough?
* encryption shouldn't be an issue since the partition is opened before
reaching the tty.
* Maybe I've made a mistake during the install, but besides having a
separated /boot, I did nothing out of the ordinary. Plus I have no boot
issues anyway. /root (including another /boot partition without the
initialization option), /home and /swap are just logical volumes of the same
encrypted volume group.

What I can also try is to redo a non-encrypted install, but with the exact
same partitioning scheme and see how it goes.

Everything was working for a while, but now whenever I try to log in I get
the same "missing free firmware" message for a few minutes and then return to
the login screen. From the login screen I am able to see ATHEROS UB93 and
connect to wifi, so the device still seems to be working, but the error
message makes it seem like it's related to the earlier issue. I am able to
start a guest session, but I am unable to run the package manager as a guest
so I can't check on open-ath9k-htc-firmware. Once I log out of the guest
session I get the same error message and return to the login screen. I'm not
sure why this is happening now after a week of no issues. I am running low on
disk space, if that could have something to do with it.

Maybe install a different Desktop Environment see if it works?

Re: [Trisquel-users] Installing NVIVO

2017-07-17 Thread Adonay Felipe Nogueira
I don't use QEMU that much (because I'm not to involved in things
related that need using it), but I think you can do like so (the "$ "
are indications that the following in the same line is a command):

1. Create a virtual machine with a maximum size of 1 GiB (qcow2 is way
   superior than most others, and is also the native type supported by
   QEMU):

   $ qemu-img create -f qcow2 "vm.img" 1G

2. Do either one of the following (or both in order):

   a. Run some system distribution image (assuming you want to do so in
   order to install it in the "vm.img"):

  $ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -boot menu=on -drive
file="any-system-distribution-image" -drive file="vm.img"

  If `qemu-system-x86_64` doesn't exist or doesn't work, try others
  such as `qemu-system-i686`. `-enable-kvm` (KVM support) depends on
  whether the kernel of your copy of Trisquel currently uses has KVM
  available. If KVM isn't supported, QEMU will tell you that either
  when called with `--enable-kvm` or during execution by going to
  the QEMU monitor (Ctrl + Alt + 2 or Ctrl + Alt + Shift + 2) and
  typing `info kvm`).

   b. Assuming you already have a system distribution installed in
   "vm.img" and wants to use it, run:

  $ qemu-system-x86_64 -enable-kvm -m 1024 -smp 1 -boot menu=on -drive
file="vm.img"

But now in my directory tree, I see in / another /boot folder, and also

Compared to a working install, /home, and the folders and files inside it
have the same ownership and permissions.

I can try with a fresh copy of .xinitrc from /etc/X11/xinit and modify it

Yes, no dedicated /home encryption, but an encrypted partition containing
/home, /root and /swap.
On the other hand, I have other fully encrypted disks (nothing installed on
them though).

No custom config files by default yet (besides the .xinitrc for testing).

I notice now that /home belongs to root.
inside home, I have:
* my user folder which belongs to me as a user (so not root)
* I have a lost+found belonging to root
* also "." and ".." listed as belonging to root. I tried to get inside one of
these, but it either brings me forward or back from the the folder I'm in.

As you said, checking files and directories permissions is also a good thing

Re: [Trisquel-users] Keyboard + mouse not responding after startx (/home & /swap encrypted)

2017-07-17 Thread albertoefg

If that doesn't... Then I would rename ~/.config/i3/config

And after that maybe .bash_profile or .bashrc or .bash

Rename them to something else, if the problem continues then you can change
the name back to the original.

In an extreme case I would rename all ~./config to something like
~/.config_old

The only thing I can't think of is that something in bash or in config is
executing something you don't want, that is why root works but user doesn't.

Of course this only if /home is decrypted

[Trisquel-users] Command execution problem

2017-07-17 Thread valkata1980

Hello,
I am having a problem installing Libreboot on my Thinkpad x60. I have already
installed Trisquel and when I type the suggested command from the guide,
being for backup of the original BIOS or installing the coreboot right away,
I get an error message :
sudo: ./flashrom/i686/flashrom_lenovobios_sst: command not found - when I
have typed:
sudo ./flashrom/i686/flashrom_lenovobios_sst -p internal -r factory.bin - for
backup.

The other command has the same error. Another thing worth mentioning is that
I have installed the OS without Internet. May be I am missing something.
Also, my BIOS boot priority, and network priority are arranged in a different
when I was setting the bootable USB. When I made them by default, the
previously installed Windows could not boot. I am worried if this is the
reason why I don't have Internet from Ethernet cable.

I could not find a solution so I am posting this. I am not well informed yet
but I have used Ubuntu and now I decided to go free. Thank you.

Ok.

So currently you have an install with only disk encryption apart from /boot
but /home has not its own encryption?

Do you have any custom config files? I would delete them first

2017-07-17 Thread mcz

Many thanks for your help albertoefg!

root user has a different config file that is not in /home but in /root

If you encrypted disk and /home when you unlock at boot you are only
unblocking the disk but not /home

Make sure /home is decrypted before startx
On the disk where the system is installed, I created /boot and left it
unencrypted, and used a whole partition where /home, /root and /swap were
created.

On boot, I unput my decrypting passphrase (twice), which is supposed to
unlock the partition containing /root, /home and /swap.

Then I input my account login and passphrase), where I land in a tty.

I didn't check the rights of the /home folder itself yet (though I did check
the its content, which is owned by me as the user, and it belongs to my
group).
